I'm a big fan of bass-guitar (as opposed to overall bass tone) in the foreground. If you actually listen to the old albums, Sabbath pioneered that and featured tracks that were MUCH more bass-guitar heavy than their contemporaries. I think it has only rarely been done right since: primus, ratm, one or two others..

The washed up analogy is weak and seems to imply that music is something only young people do, since youth, or more specifically the lack of youth, is the defining factor in much "washed up" athleticism. I disagree. While the rawness of youth certainly contains much to be appreciated, so too does the practiced hand have something to offer. I think that you discount that out of hand without a critical analysis is quite telling about who you are.

Thank god someone understands music. You fucking faggots who try to turn music into a sport by arguing that some music is better based purely on how technical a player is dont understand music and should stick to watching sports, not analyzing music.

Some of the best music ever created is comprised of 3 chords....its not about how hard something is to play or how skilled a player is, its about blowing people minds with a bad ass song and EVERY instrument should service the song, no one should be on stage musically wanking to try to look cool to the leet sport metal kids.

Fuck all of you who try to turn music into a sport. Its not about how fast someone can play, its about creating the best song you can that gives you and other people amazing feelings. I fucking hate you sport metal faggots so much, there are no words that would do my feelings of hatred for you justice.

They've done touring under the monniker playing the old songs for decades, but nothing new that is anything like the original has happened since then. Not that this is "like the original," but just this recording is a jesus h. fuckton better than anything ozzy has ever put out solo or anything that dio sing-alonged to.

I <3 fan fiction.

Heavy metal was discovered by butler, iommi, and ward in the run-up to the writing of this album, but it was certainly and definitively introduced to the world at their first reception of the riffing performed at 4:53 in this recording.

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_GgBx7Y0aso?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_GgBx7Y0aso?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I defy anyone in the world to come up with a better definition and first appearance of metal than this. This riff is absolutely descriptive of what heavy metal is, and all metal since has drawn most of it's style and form, to this day, from this single piece of music.

While I dont disagree in the least that Sabbath is metal, I wonder what we're all defining as metal in our own minds. Metal styles were around before Sabbath, go back to early Floyd for example in '67. While they're harmonizing lyrics etc there is definitely some metal "style" guitar etc going on in the background (listen to The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" album).

So do their harmonies of voice make them not metal? I would say no, that isn't the case... Was all their music metal, of course not, and I would he hard pressed to say that every Sabbath song was as well... but that doesn't mean they didn't have metal songs.

So what is truly defined as "Metal". I saw one person mention guitar distortion, but that was around before Sabbath... lyrics about the devil, hell, etc... people might refer to that as "death metal" (by today's standards it may just be emo)... but isn't that just a FORM of metal since not all Metal has lyrics about the devil and hell.

So if we're all using different terms as to what is metal, maybe we need to start with defining a common agreement before we go saying that someone is or is not metal, since what I say is metal may not be the same as what you claim is metal ;)

Who gives a fuck what you label it? I have never once gotten into an argument about what is "metal" with any of my musician friends. People who understand music have no desire to play in the sandbox of definition with you music newbies.

Music is either good, or bad. Stop trying to force every fucking thing into a box. When i see guys who think they are totally "metal" and argue about what is and what isnt metal...i just start laughing because they are doing exactly what american idol and all the pop music they claim to "hate" does.

At the same time, i dont care what you call sabbath. Call it metal, call it rock, call it doomacolypitcalgenocidalmegalomaniacal steelmetal. It doesn't matter, it fucking rocks, thats what matters.

I disagree. While the rawness of youth certainly contains much to be appreciated, so too does the practiced hand have something to offer. I think that you discount that out of hand without a critical analysis is quite telling about who you are.

You're arguing from subjectivity, so there's no objective ground to be had in order for a rational agreement to be reached. I like Sabbath, but I've heard all I wish to hear from them. Someone plays a song on the jukebox at the bar I don't flip out cause I've heard it 50,000 times because it's their money they put into the machine and that's what they want to hear. At this point, it's analogous to the Rolling Stones doing tours. Yeah another few million dollars is nice and I don't blame them for doing so, but the majority of their fans are as old as they are and want to be in some nostalgic dream that transports them to their youth. I don't think that that's healthy behavior because of what nostalgia does to the psyche. Sabbath's place in music history is cemented, and they will always get credit for starting metal. Now it's time for them to fade out and go about their lives and let that ego go because there's a point where it's just sad that they can't let it go and abandon their ideas of who they are and what they do in order to gracefully bow out with some class (Johnny Carson comes to mind). If this is their last ride together then great. Make it the last and be honest about it.

Your comparison of music and athletics is flawed. Music isn't a physical thing in terms of its creation where as athletics is absolutely physical and, usually, a competition in some form. I'm not interested in what Sabbath can do now because I don't think they would be willing to drift out of what's expected of them. If they did a gospel album I'd be willing to listen, and, yes, this sounds like what they have already done but with better recording equipment and some odd click on the tom toms (could be the speakers I have).

I have. Have you gone over the lyrical content of any BS? Ozzy has always been a professed Christian, if somewhat unafraid to explore the implications of the darker side of his chosen religion.

I just had a moment where I realized that if you actually compare real satanists of history vs real catholics of history, the satanists would probably be the nicer people, objectively.

OK you obviously know nothing of actual satanism or your definition of what we're talking about is simply wildly inaccurate, so while this is sort of low hanging fruit, I'll bite. Let's just start with # of lives lost as a direct result of the policies of either organization - catholicism on the one side and satanism (lol) on the other side.

You go first. Find me all the people who have ever been killed by satan-worshippers. Go ahead and count the ones in stories as factual. Add them up, and get back to me.

Is violence the only or the first basis for comparison? That's not a false dichotomy because first is implying a list of sorts. I'm asking on how you make your comparison. You've made the claim, and I'm simply asking what the basis of it is.

Actually, I asked a question first then you berated me on being an idiot and not knowing what I was talking about, so I clarified my question in regards to how you were making your comparison with this post:

Is violence the only or the first basis for comparison? That's not a false dichotomy because first is implying a list of sorts. I'm asking on how you make your comparison. You've made the claim, and I'm simply asking what the basis of it is.

Then I commented from a hope that the thread was dead, but like any good horror movie hero I had to poke the pig, so to speak, and turn around for one second then boom:

You never answered my question. You simply hedged your statement.

Quit dodging and maybe we can have a conversation.

I asked you a direct question. Answer it or shut the fuck up and quit pretending to have any idea what you're talking about.

You've not answered my original question, so how could I not have any claim but "doubtful" to your comparison because I was asking for you to share a little more information.

You've been hedging since.

Where did I say anything about how I would make a comparison? This is on you to make the table. I'm a curious party in this. Need a breakdown of "How would you set up your comparable table?" That's all second person, and you still have not answered my question. I suggest you take some time to get out of representational thinking.

Bolded word shows you DOUBTING my original statement that satanists are probably nicer people than catholics. Then you go on to suggest a "comparable table" whereby we can settle this matter. Since you doubted my original proposition, I suggest that the onus is on you to disprove me, since that seems to be your intention.

However, being the nice guy I am:

http://i.imgur.com/NuLfJoX.jpg

I've now shown you how I would set up my "comparable table," and since you didn't understand a simple description of a "comparable table," I've now drawn you a picture.

I said in response to you that I would START with # of lives lost due to the policies of these organizations.

The minute you tell me how many people satanism has killed, I will give a value for catholocism, and we can continue comparing and contrasting until you either prove yourself a the moran you've suggested yourself to be or you change your mind.
