I like stories about people and their gaming addictions.
Does anyone have a similar story?

I would say that most people here suffer from hikikomori just ask them.

I failed my first attempt @ college over non-stop SC1 in the labs. Korean kids owned us in game and in school. Lesson learned.

I went on an all night eq bender in grade 8 and got 0/20 on a French verb test despite cheating.
I cheated off the wrong conjugation table.

Is it wrong that the only thing I was really thinking while reading this was how bad a player he must be to basically play 3+ months non stop and only be level 40? As a fucking bard?

Kotaku writers are pretty notoriously bad at video games.
That being said, no exp bonus and no swarm kiting back then.

My days in college were spent not going to class, but playing eq and going to the gym.
I was a Gym Rat and a Big Nerd at the same time.

Gaming pushed me to learn about computers. I ended up turning it into a good career.
Nothing wrong with neckbearding it out when you can afford to do it, some people just don't know when to walk away. I pretty much stopped gaming completely from about age 25-30, started a family and put all of my extra time into my career.
Now my kid is older and I have a good job and I can afford to play games a lot more.
Life balance.

The only saving grace of my intense gaming days was that it pushed me into a career in computing. I got my first job because the manager played Starcraft and Diablo. Biggest LAN gaming I ever did was at work with the crew.
