Hey Guys. Being the lazy bastard and EQ addict I am, I decided to try to get EQ to run at work.

I opened the EQ folder at home and burnt all the files onto a cd. I took the cd to work, popped it into the drive, and copy/pasted them into a folder on my work computer. I made a shortcut, added the patchme to the end.

When I try to open EQ it gives me an error saying "eqgame.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Any suggestions? I am running windows VISTA at home, and Windows XP at work.

Your domain at work is probably behind a firewall. You may be able to do something with a proxy server but I don't know the details of how that would work - someone else here may be able to provide suggestions.

hmm ok. If anyone could offer any suggestions on how to get around this it would be much appreciated.

I just want to make my childhood dream of playing eq while working come true lol

I would suggest using your phone if you have a smartphone with tethering ;)

I had a friend over at my place and we didn't get IP exempt fast enough, so I let him use my home connection and I played through my cell phones data connection. No lag! Thats the great thing about an awesome 11 year old game haha.

I had the same problem when machines i tried to run EQ on did not have hardware acceleration turned on, or did not have 3d hardware in them..

I am running on a lap top. Specs are:

Genuine Intel CPU @T2300 @ 1.66GHz
980 MHz. 1 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GO 7400
WinXP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2

I can run other games on it. Think it may have to do with the way I put the files on my comp? Instead of DLing everything on this comp I just burned the files onto a cd then copy/pasted the files from the cd onto this comp.

Perhaps it is confused with where it's trying to find the files?

On XP the system installs to C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest

Do you have Vista 64 bit? If so that goes to C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\EverQuest\

I don't know.. something to try though!

If you burn it to CD, I don't know if you have to edit the shortcut location, etc...

I checked and it is pointed to the correct path. When I open the game it starts up, but then crashes right away giving me that error message.

Thanks for all these suggestions, keep em comin!!!

Thats a good way to get fired.
The network guys at your work can see EVERYTHING that goes in or out through the firewall.
Every URL you surf, every connection made.

Make sure your work doesn't mind that you run online games from there or you might be out of a job.

Food for thought, but when I setup corporate networks I have any executable kill itself that isn't part of the whitelist that's been setup. If it's tried to access the net or any part of the network a report is printed and then the executable dies.

That said this doesn't seem to be the case here, with EQ all you'd get is an error msg saying connection failure or access denied. I'd suggest putting the files on a USB stick or burning at a very slow speed (making sure that everything fits onto the cd, because EQ titanium won't fit onto a single cd..). Would imagine if you have access to a cd drive USB ports would probably not be disabled either.

My comp does have SD cards slots, just couldn't find an extra SD card so opted for the CD. I will try that. The comp I use for work is my own lap top. I use the internet connection here but I connect onto my work station through something called Citrix. Wonder if they monitor what I do on the internet or just what i do on the internet on my work station. I do not have a conventional office in a corporate HQ.. I have an office in another company's office building.

I would highly imagine that if you're using another companies net connection on your laptop you shouldn't have any problem running whatever you like. I've never used Citrix but I know what it is & how it works and would imagine the network guys on the Citrix end of the connection can't monitor what you're running in the background. If anyone could it'd be the guys whose internet connection you're using.

Take your laptop home and try it. Easy way to see if it will work ;)

This is good news.

You're right, I will do this tonight. I may just have to re download the client on this computer and make sure all the files are there and not corrupt.

Thanks Everyone. I will update this thread later tonight with results.

your best option would be to run a vpn client that can run behind your firewall

Yup. If your work firewall had the ports blocked that EQ opens to run, you won't be able to play.

You can VPN into your home network and run it from there if you look into it. =)

have you tried re downloading it (if you can download torrents at work, which you might not be able to) FROM your work? perhaps the burn isnt working for whatever reason.

also, make sure that the target in the shortcut is correct in where your directory is.
