I really dislike beer but I would honestly like to change that. I am a big rum drinker. I love Captain Spiced, Appleton Jamaican, Captain White .. whatever, I like it all. I just can't drink beer, there is just something about it. So far I have determined I really dislike:

Budweiser
Alexander Keith's (Local NS Beer)

So someone give me some ideas to try.

Brother in law has suggested Stella Artois, any opinions?

A lot of people are in the same boat as you.

I was trying to think of a beer that would be an easy transition from rum, but i don't really know a whole lot about the subject.

According to a friend of mine, there are a lot of rum-beer mixes out there. Maybe you could start with trying a mix, gradually doing less rum and more beer? :p

I didn't even like beer until about a month or two ago. I literally would get near to puking if I drank particular brands, so it was always a struggle to keep up with drinking games. For whatever reason I had one night of heavy drinking beer where afterwords I could just drink it. Like, literally, I can down pretty much any beer now.

Doesn't make much sense. The point is to keep at it. Force yourself at first. Don't miss opportunities to drink beer now just because you don't like it.

Sam Adams anytime...

Pilsner Urquell and Stella Artois in the summer time...

Bass Ale and Guiness in the winter (mmm, black & tans - and somehow, that always leads to Scotch!)

Budweiser and Keith's is not a good stepping-off point so I can understand why you wouldn't like it. I quite enjoy Stella myself but I wouldn't recommend it to get into beer. I'd think you would want to try out some honey browns and red ales first. Sleeman's has a few decent ones and are pretty readily available. Try out some local/smaller breweries too.

This be my weapon of choice. Sweet sweet oak aged Innis & Gun.

As far as beers that don't have that "beer" taste:

Stella is EXCELLENT. Light flavor, very crisp and with very little aftertaste.
Guinness is EXCELLENT. The steak of beers. Also, the coffee of beers. Some people love it, some people hate it. I recommend you try a pint of draft Guinness that has been treated with nitrous rather than carbon dioxide, but barring that the cans with the widget rather than the bottles with or without the widget are very similar to Guinness from a keg in Ireland.

Fruited Lambic Beers are great for a changeup. I'm not a fan of fruity beer, but Lambics are a special case, and if you don't like beer, you really might like Lambic.

I really like Arrogant Bastard Ale, but it takes the beer taste to a whole new level. Another great brown ale is Anchor Steam. These beers have very strong hops flavor, which I personally like. It might be that you will too. This type of beer has a VERY strong flavor, but it is NOT that "piss" flavor you get with budweiser or fosters. It's a totally different experience.

For medium quality "everyday" beers, Samuel Adams has a large selection of quality beers for a decent price.

You might like Malt Liquor actually. Old English "800" is a quality malt beverage (I know several of you are laughing right now), that has a rich smooth flavor, and if you drink it quickly, very little skunk/piss aftertaste.

In general, beer will take on the skunk flavor if you don't drink it quickly. It's best to finish a pint in 1-4 sips, so that this doesn't happen. I personally drink a pint of Guinness in one sip, goes down real smooth and puts an instant smile on your face.

..and of course Dos Equis. Mexican beers are their own special animal, and truly compliment Mexican food, especially if it's spicy. I recommend a dash of salt and a squeezed lime wedge in every bottle. Tecate and Corona are also decent quality Mexican beers.

99 cherries is hardly "girly drink"

i prefer liquor to beer also. mainly whiskey, jameson.

about disliking beer i think the more you drink it the better its gonna taste, basically

ive drank more keystone than anyone probably should. but as far as what i like japanese beers are good. ichiban and sapporo.

and if anyone here is from utah they know about the great wasatch, squatters, moab breweries out here.

I'm glad a few of you posted beers that aren't found at every gas station, for those of you who did, find your local brewery.

Sailor Jerry = win, have a Sea Monster (Sailor shot dropped into monster, like a jaeger bomb).

Chimay is very, very good, but i haven't seen the one posted in the picture before.

If you are ever in Denver or Boulder visit the Mountain Sun/Souther Sun (in Boulder) or Vine Street Pub (In Denver). Generally about 12 local brewed beers on tap, best beer I've ever had by a long, long, long shot.

left coast brewery (http://www.leftcoastbrewing.com/beers.htm) makes a couple of good pints, Hop Juice is good if you like stronger tasting drinks, and their Asylum is apparently excellent, but I have been unable to get a hold of any myself.

this beer kicked my ass (http://www.lostabbey.com/lost-abbey-beers/year-round-beers/judgment-day/) and I loved every minute of it.

As for a beginners beer, I would suggest New Castle brown ale... it tastes good at room temperature or cold and is easy as hell to find.

Apparently, 80% of people who take pictures of beer have no idea how to pour them. Qq.

Different beer pours are supposed to result in different amounts of head in the glass.

Beers with a high abv should not have much head in the glass, or at least if they do, it shouldn't last.

I know witbiers are supposed to have a decent sized head

Wenai - there are so many kinds of beer out there that taste completely different, that there are sure to be some you'll like. You might go to a brewery with a wide variety and ask for tasters - most places will give you an ounce or two of everything they make. There is a very wide variety on this thread even.

One of the most in-demand microbrewery seasonals, also from my hometown...

Lots of good beers posted here I'm happy to see. I've got a few that were skipped tho, so I'll add 'em :)

ESBs are my all-time favorite beer, but they have to come out of a keg for the real experience. The Beer Shrine up near Bellingham, WA does an in-house ESB kegged with nitro that's honestly the BEST beer I have ever tasted. Hale's also does a good ESB, and their cream ale is wtfgood.

For bottled beers I like IPAs. Stone brewery makes a good one call Ruination that you can find pretty easily in a well-stocked grocery store. Best IPA I've had tho is the Jasmine IPA by the Seattle-based Elysian Brewery, but it's hard to find if you don't live in the area.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff212/brewedforthought/Beers/CIMG3113.jpg

http://www.rocbeer.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/IMGP5467.jpg

I also love a good porter with the dark beer taste but the crisp, light mouthfeel of a lighter beer. I'm not a big fan of stouts with the exception of Guiness since it has a lighter taste and nice creamy texture. The best porters I've had have been in local microbreweries - Elysian, Hale's, Georgetown, and others, but Deschutes' Black Butte Porter is an excellent option that is widely available.

This sounds pretty awesome, gonna have to try it. Red Stripe mixed 50/50 with Ginger Ale is pretty much the shit as well. Good for a BBQ on a hot day; can drink em all day long without getting totally blotto'd.

As a similar story, this vodka created memories of the worst night of my life. Almost kicked out of school and left with a hospital bill I couldn't tackle.
Life is better, and I am not so retarded anymore.

OMG, you too - I didn't quite get to the hospital. Maybe the first time I ever really *drank* harder stuff.

Helped my friend's uncle clean out his garage - he mixed up a big pitcher of OJ and dumped like a whole 5th of that Vodka in there. I just basically pounded 2 or 3 of the big 32 oz cups full of it.

Was worshiping at the porcelain altar all night.

I still.. don't drink Vodka, lol

There are a million things to complain about where I live, but good beer (and greenery for that matter) aren't among them. We have a very robust microbrew culture here and it just keeps getting better.

I'm a HUGE fan of Terrapin Rye Pale Ale but I kind of burned myself out on it and have been falling back to the Sweetwater brews, particularly the IPA. The 420 is okay but it needs to be on tap and fresh or it gets kind of an unpleasant harsh edge to it.

This summer, I think Avery Pale Ale has been my go-to beer more than any other, though. Fantastic beer, that one, if you like em hoppy.

This local brew is what I prefer. My weekends often consist of visiting the brewery which is 30mins away in Abita Springs, LA for a free tour and an "All You Can Drink" beer buffet 30 minutes before and after the tour, This is often followed by a meal at the Abita Grill down the street which used to be the old brewery before being converted into a restaurant.

Unlike everyone else, I don't have pictures of unusual fringe beers which I tried once on holiday 4 years ago but which I am now claiming to always keep stocked in my fridge, so my contributions to this thread:

Guinness is horrible. And not just the filthy bottled kind, the draft kind too. That probably goes for any kind of stout but Guinness is the only one I've tried.

I remember when Corona was unheard of in the UK. In places like New Mexico you could buy it for 60 cents a bottle when other beers were $3. All of a sudden it took off and this stuff you wouldn't douche with is now sold in the UK as if it's some kind of premium beer.

Like many, I am an anti-American-beer snob, but have to say I really like Sam Adams. Pretty much every seasonal brew as well as the regular. I always have it in my fridge along with Magners cider.

When I'm in Canada I drink Keith's or Rickard's Red. When I'm in the UK I drink draft Boddy's because I am a victim of their cool advertising.

There, now that was interesting wasn't it.

Went to Sunset Grille in Brighton this past weekend, they have something like 400 beers on tap, and found out Allagash makes this incredible stout.

Never tried that, but I like the simple, understated label. I doesn't look like a cartoon, like most of the micro brews.

I am not pretentious and I don't consider myself a beer snob. I just like the taste of beer and I like trying different styles, flavors, and types.

Many places now offer a "build your own 6 pack" deal where you can pick out each bottle you want in the sixer from shelves and shelves of tasty beers. Sometimes it can be hit or miss, but that's part of the fun :)

question though, it seems you'll really need to research the types of ingredients to determine the proportions to flavor it. I understand a lot of kits come with a pre-mixed season pack, but ideally I'd buy my own hops. I'm just wondering if most home brewers go that route? If not, what makes your brew unique?

Double post:

azeth, It's (for me) not as much about 'unique brew' so much as it's about saying "I made this in my kitchen and its fucking good."

If you really wanna try cooking up a batch, I'd first identify a style you enjoy, and think you'd be happy drinking 5 gallons of, and then I'd suggest getting a kit for your first attempt. It makes the process easier to get a feel for, everything is laid out and pre-measured. They are largely uninspired (kits are usually a generic 'amber ale, ESB, stout, etc.), but have quality ingredients, and taste good. If it comes out good, then talk to your local brew shop and tell him 'I want to make a _____, what do you suggest I use to get this?" Internet research is pretty cool too. There's alot of homebrew forums out there with guys sharing recipes for clone brews and made up ones too.

Still PM me.

Disclaimer: I'm still new at this so totally disregard anything I say as fact but more of observation~

The biggest issues do arise from trying to unlock flavors and do so without causing a major cockup in the fermentation process. To ease the pain and suffering I tend to use heavy malts and light hops (bittering hops) to make darker, heavier beers (stouts, porters). Those don't rely as much on grains to have specific proportions because you tend to cover that up more with heavy flavors from the malt. I don't end up with a bitey beer like an IPA or a floral beer like wits, but you honestly can do whatever the hell you want. I'd suggest starting out with a kit just to get a feel for not only the proportions but also the brewing and bottling process. I have a friend that didn't start with a kit only to find out he didn't even have all of the equipment. I helped him bottle beer right from the carboy.... poor guy, it's going to have a layer of yeast at the bottom of every bottle :(

I just employed my 16 oz Grolsch bottles of cream ale (a type I haven't tried before) to entertain guests and it did end up a bit flat because I lost some of my grains like an idiot. Everyone said it was still good, and that's what really matters. When first tasting it I ran into the problem of figuring out why it was flat and finding ways to mask it. Best bet: pair it with food or snacks. Taco and Beer night was born. $$$ On the flipside, I made a stout that everyone loved, even my family (none of which drink beer).

Uniqueness, at this point, hasn't been something I can put my finger on but I'm enjoying the fact that it's a process I am doing myself with a pretty damn good result. Kits or bulk ingredients will both net you a drink that has a decent ABV. One thing I've noticed is that the homemade beers tear through my roommate and I. We can usually drink a lot of IPAs, black lagers, or stouts but we can't handle more than a few of these... it's not even from the standpoint of wanting to savor each bottle... we just can't consume them at a fast rate. The brewing experience itself is entertaining and rewarding. At this point I've made a beer so clear (sometimes this isn't easy) that had a great head that just stuck there in the glass for a while. The flavor wasn't all that but the overall drinking experience of it has been perfect for summer nights. Too bad I'm almost out :(

azeth, It's (for me) not as much about 'unique brew' so much as it's about saying "I made this in my kitchen and its fucking good."

This, but you eventually run into a unique taste/flavor. ALWAYS write your recipes down.

EDIT: Next up on the list: buying or making a wort cooler (for even clearer beers both visually and flavor wise!) and looking at a black lager (I might require refrigeration for this.. which sucks), an IPA/APA or darker ale (still living on the edge of needing refrigderation), or another stout. This fall I want to focus on seasonal ales or possibly a toasted coconut stout (late summer/early fall). I might eventually look at getting a second carboy so that I always have a batch coming in. Right now I have about a 1 or 2 week lead time depending on how fast the previous batch gets consumed~

The few times I've had beer with the layer of yeast settled to the bottom it was pretty fucking tasty, once you got past the look.

You're right, it is a matter of aesthetics more than anything, but put it this way: the entire contents of the carboy entered each and every bottle because of the methods he employed to get the beer into the bottles. That is a LOT of yeast per bottle. As long as you decant the beer off the yeast into a glass you've probably got a fine beer but the ultimate is to be able to drink from the bottle and not feel like you just drank something with sand and vomit mixed in.

quellren

Some people love the yeast in homebrew. I like it in stouts and porters, but not so much in ales. It imparts a 'biscuity' flavor that I think only goes with heavy malty-ness. Just pour half the bottle, then swirl up the other half to suspend the yeast and pour it in.

It does have a shitload of vitamin-B though, so it's good for you.

^ lol

I think that wholly depends on the yeast and the amount in the bottle. I usually pour my cream ale into a glass (I love the way the beer looks). There's a small ring of yeast even after it's been filtered that does come out and it makes a noticeably metallic flavor in it. Maybe it depends on the yeast, but I didn't enjoy it in the ale. I couldn't tell with the stout since it was all but Guiness in terms of heaviness so it may have been chock full of the stuff. If it were treated with Nitrogen instead of natural carbonation I'm sure I would've had a contender for a damn fine Guiness replacement.

I'm super picky about yeast sediment. I usually ferment in one carboy, then once the SG stops dropping I very gently, by siphon, rack to a 2nd carboy for clarification. Once its time to bottle I siphon it back to the first carboy and add in the mason jar of wort for priming. That generally leaves me less than 1/16th of an inch of sediment in the bottles.

Apparently there's a few places over in Asheville, NC that have successfully grown all organic hops. Other than that, I don't know of many places on the east coast that grow it, at all.

Also: Having a whole backyard full of one kind of hops would be.....limiting.

I imagine that if you wanted enough harvestable hops to actually brew beer you're taking up a lot of space. Being in Mass, if you were to invest in grow-house equipment then you could create the correct environment to grow small amounts of different strains making sure to keep them separate (or hybridize them if you're crazy) and piss off the DEA in the process.

That's definitely for advanced brewers only. That's about the point where you have a few 10-25 gallon tanks sitting in your basement or something. Just buy the stuff because it's cheap.

Hop flower cones (strobiles, to be nerdy) weigh the same as hop pellets, so a single hop vine would yield you alot of hops and thus alot of beer. (An ounce of fresh hops is more volume than pellets, but an ounce of either gives the same effect in wort)
After you successfully grow this plant that is 20 feet tall and needs a frame to hang from, you'd still need to dry and store them in a freezer, use them quickly, and ultimately, you'd still only have a few varieties at best. Due to the climate needs, they'd all likely be of the same 'greater family' like Noble, or New Worlds, which will limit your choices of beer.

Seriously, hops are like 2 dollars an oz. just buy them.

I could really go for a cold unfilter weiss with a slice of lemon right about now...

The local micro (before it closed) made something very comparable to Hacker-Pschorr and I swear we used to get a growler of it a weekend during the summer.

Watered down or not, its still my favorite beer. I guess its a habit. I do like a fresh draft blue moon with an orange slice tho! Ale i know but its not a bud :)

Do you get cinnamon or nutmeg sprinkled on the head?

Drafthouses like the Flying Saucer (southeast US) have over 200 types of beer on tap/in bottles, chilled and ready for enjoyment. I think they offer $40 belgians all the way down to PBR. Surprisingly enough barely anyone buys the cheap shit because there is just no way you can't enjoy having so much power to choose at your fingertips.

At a regular bar I'd expect it, because no bar is going to go out of their way to possibly hurt margins by stocking up on stuff no one wants. If you are a bartender I recommend getting a few six packs of something unique and letting people try them on a special. See if it bites, and have some more in the following weeks not on special and see if people stick with it, then decide if it's worth stocking up on it to bring something unique and flavorful into an otherwise drab and depressing world of piss water. Who knows.. could be a new surprising part of the business!

I like Blue Moon for what it is. Expand your horizons just a bit and you'll see Coors is doing a phenomenal job with its fake 'Sandlot Brewery' and Blue Moon is just a typical Belgian White Ale.
Belgian Whites are unfiltered, light-bodied wheat ales made with Noble hops, citrus peel and spices like anise, cinnamon and coriander. Meant to be enjoyed with a fruit wedge.

Sound Familiar?

Ever tried the seasonal Honeymoon, or Wintermoon?

I've also found that people looking to branch out from the standard Miller, Bud, Coors etc really enjoy:

Still has a light taste but a bit more distinctive than your standard 3.

Hot off the press from Reuters (allegedly):

Budweiser will only be used to water the pitch at Wembley, FA assures fans

After announcing that Budweiser will sponsor the FA Cup as of next year, the Football Association has assured supporters that they will never be exposed to a single drop of the stuff.

The initial announcement filled fans with the fear that Budweiser would be the only low-quality alcoholic beverage available at matches during next year’s competition, causing angry scenes which forced the governing body to react by calling an emergency press conference.

“I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down,” FA chairman David Bernstein told the conference. “Nobody will be drinking Budweiser.”

“We would never allow this vile American lager pass the lips of anyone in our stadia because we know that our fans would rather be exposed to bean sprouts from Germany.”

“I’m afraid, however, that everyone will still have to make do with likes of Carling and even Tuborg,” he added, “and there’s still no escaping those awful plastic cups.”

Practical use

The FA chairman moved to further allay those anxieties by insisting that the sponsor’s product will only be put to more practical and industrial uses, including watering the pitch and general cleaning purposes.

“It’s not something we wanted to do but they were offering so much money that we just couldn’t refuse,” Bernstein continued, “which unfortunately means that the stuff will be in the cisterns and it will also be running all through the drains.”

“So if you happen to smell anything odd in the toilets – don’t blame your friends, blame the Budweiser.”

I am also curious as to your definition of a beer snob. Simply someone that refuses to drink Miller/Bud/Coors in favor of more expensive beer?

I don't like paying for something I won't enjoy. That's called efficiency not snobbery.

I pay attention to flavors and the construction of a beer because I LOVE the complexity of it even when a beer may have as few as 3 or 4 ingredients.

The Big 3 don't offer any complexity or uniqueness, not to mention any flavor, that I would want to purchase.

I can't imagine a beer snob as someone that would go so far as to be someone that specifically purchased a beer because of where or how it was made, but if that's what he's referring to then I can kind of agree.

But I'll drink a good beer and not care what my friends are drinking and do it all the time.

I agree. Why pay money for something I'm not going to enjoy?

That said, there are certain nights when I'm simply on a quest to get drunk on a budget. Like I said earlier, those nights many times end up somewhere they're serving 2 for 1 pisswaters and dollar E&J shots ;) Every beer has a purpose. I'm an equal opportunity drunk.

Or baseball games, for example. If I happen to drop a can of Keystone on the ground, I'm not going to be as upset as, say, dropping a bottle of my favorite chocolate stout. Different situations for different methods of alcohol.

I never really liked beer. I was more of a Rum and coke guy.

But I was talking with a friend of mine about Beers and told him I've never found a beer I liked. I listed off the 3 major piss-water brands and he understood. He said he had the beer for me.
I went to the Pub (actually the name of a bar) and tried an Aventinus.
The server poured the beer in the Aventinus logo glass and I took a sip.

After every beer I've tried, I ask myself. Would I drink this if it wasn't alcholoic? Aventinus was the first time I answered yes.

It took a few more over the next few days and I began to really enjoy it. By then I was past the 'beer' flavor and started picking up on the other flavors.

It's expensive and inconvenient to get which prevents me from drinking (and spending) too much. It's a Beer I really enjoy every weekend or so.
http://www.guidedesbieres.com/photos/932-biere-aventinus.jpg

On a side note I have tried the Eisbock, but did not enjoy it that much. I think it was the setting though. I enjoy Aventinus out of a glass because I take in the smell as much as the taste. The Eisbock was almost room temp and out of the bottle. I would be willing to try it again, but haven't had the opportunity. It's even rarer than the Aventinus around here (Hampton Roads, VA).
