2 of my friends who are starting to play and they are both having similar problems. One of them when they first open EQ gets a total blank screen and thats it. The other friend gets a blank screen after trying to connect to the server.

Any fixes for these problems? They installed the game correctly and changed the appropriate files.

Thanks for the help.

One of Cylix's friends here.

I'm having issues getting past the server select screen. I made sure that I was in windowed mode and it still never loads. Eventually it loads back to log-in screen.

Any ideas what I can do to fix it?

I hope to be playing with you all soon!

Just a thought, are graphics drivers up to date?

Have you configured the display options before you login? Not sure if that would cause that...

Graphics drivers are up to date. I use an ATi 4800 series (1gb internal DDR5), WoW works fine.

What display options need to be changed? I read only that I needed to be in windowed mode for it to correctly run.

Thanks for the help!

hmm not really sure what else you could try, maybe try running eq on wineq 2 to see if it loads with that

Could it be a port problem? I live on a college campus that attempts to block many ports on the network. I had the unblock 5998. I'm still able to log into the server select screen but it won't load past it.

I may try a fresh install next. Thoughts?

Thanks

On my girlfriend's laptop EQ would crash every time she tried to launch it. I'd see the window start, then it would crash. I fixed it on a hunch by changing resolution to 1280x800 (her laptop is 1440x900 and running XP) and launching the game.

Now it opens fine under 1440x900 in a 1280x800 window. :confused: somehow that unfucked it.

Might be worth giving a shot, changing the resolutions and whatnot.

What OS is everyone using?

I had the same issue on my laptop, the resolution was something like 1280x800 but didn't appear in the list on Options, so I picked the closest one (1280x960) and BOOM EQ wouldn't get past server select. Go into the file eqclient.ini in your Everquest folder (probably under Program Files) and modify the section that looks like this:

[VideoMode]
WindowedWidth=1280
WindowedHeight=800
Width=1280
Height=800
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=0
WidthWindowed=1280
HeightWindowed=800

Obviously replace 1280x800 with whatever your screen resolution is (rt click on screen, Properties, Settings, Screen Resolution slider) and you should be good to go.

Mg

Could it be a port problem?

Interesting question, if you're behind a restrictive firewall (as I am at work, which is probably beneficial to my continued employment :D ) I know that the login server uses port 5998 but doesn't the clients need to connect to zone processes using the ports assigned to them like 7001 etc? Or does world connect to those and serve them up through another port? I'll run a netstat tonight to see what ports are being used to run the game, but that won't cause the black screen of death, it would only crash when zoning... fix your screen resolution and see what happens!

Now where have we heard about "crashing when zoning..." Hmmmm :)
