View Full Version : EQ Lite Client Guide [Auto-Script or Manually]

Hey all, I mentioned in my original thread about making a Lite EQ Client that I would put together a guide... so here it is! I've created a few ways for you to create your EQ Lite client depending on what you are comfortable with. Here are a few pieces of info about the client, and options available:

PRE-REQUISITE
- This is only a script and does NOT include the full game client. You need to have the full TITANIUM Client installed, and running on Project 1999.

"EQLite" CLIENT DETAILS
- This will create a 1.35GB client down from the 3.6GB Titanium Install
- All Graphics, Sounds, Maps & Effects are in-tact
- ONLY Classic, Kunark & Velious Zones were kept - all other zones were removed.
- Keeps Plane of Time zone for the CTF event put on by server GM's (added 5-30-10)
- Keeps Plane of Growth to allow the old school models to work properly.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Q: I have my Titanium copy installed on my D drive, so I changed your batch file accordingly, but once I run the file its finished within a few seconds. The new EQLite folder is in my C root directory, but it's empty! Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
A: Move the batch file to the same directory as your installation and run it from there. Has helped most people having this problem.

CHANGE LOG
03/09/2014: Edited script to include all Plane of Growth files. I had only included the Plane of Growth character model file, and not the zone files. This has been fixed! Unfortunately, this will not add the files to your directory if you are currently missing them. You will need to find the full install of Titanium and copy all "growthplane_*.*" files to your EQLite directory. Sorry :(

AUTOSCRIPT/BATCH METHOD:
- This is the fastest way to create your EQLite client, and it will work for your current Titanium installation.
- Download the following BATCH file "EQLite.bat" (it's within the zip file):

NOTE: If you're worried about viruses from my file or something (it's just a text file with DOS commands), run it through VirusTotal (scans file through 30+ different virus scanners) -- http://www.virustotal.com/

- Extract the BAT file from the ZIP file above -- then right click on the .BAT file, and click "EDIT" - this should open the script in Notepad (if it doesn't, manually open it from NotePad)
- Make sure the 3rd line down is pointing to YOUR local installation of EverQuest -- This is the standard installation path for Titanium, but if you've installed elsewhere you MUST change the path or this script will fail.


cd\
mkdir c:\EQLite
cd c:\program files\sony\everquest\

- Save the script after editing it
- Double click on the "EQLite.BAT" file and run the script! (give it about 5 minutes)
- Your new EQLite client is now located on the root of your C Drive at C:\EQLite -- or you may now change the location of where you want it installed. See directions inside the BAT file.
- Edit your EQGame Shortcut (per the Setup Guide on this site) and you're done!

Just copy that directory to your USB Jumpdrive and you're good to go! Just make sure you have 1.35GB available for the client!

MANUAL METHOD:
- This is a bloody slow way to do it, but it works
- Create a new blank directory wherever you want the EQLite Client to exist (most likely your USB drive)
- Open both directories side by side
- Copy ONLY the directories & files listed below into your new EQLite Client
- Edit your EQGame Shortcut (per the Setup Guide on this site) and you're done!

that is a good question .. probably not on your harddrive .. but maybe if you have a highspeed flash drive, wich isnt that expensive anymore, only needing 1,5 gb

thou it all depends on how EQ was coded ... but afaik EQ only handles the files when they are actualy accessed, so removing them should do nothing to the speed ...

Just FYI if you have EQ on a separate drive (for me it is drive D) you may have to move the batch file INTO your EQ directory, also while modifying the script, for it to work.

tried this last night and worked a charm. similar to ciggwin's comments, my EQ was on the D: drive so i changed all references d:\eqlite and d:\myeqdir and then ran the batch file from the command prompt, making sure i changed the drive from c: to d:.

actually you could probably add a line to the batch file to do this for you, but anyway it worked brilliantly and i know have an eq installation on my 2gb memory stick which works great :)

Thanks all for the comments - glad it's all working well for you.

The 1.35GB size is definitely not definitive, and can be whittled down even more... but you then begin to lose some of the base install functionalities which some may or may not want to lose (i.e. maps, sounds, environment effects such as rain, clouds, water). The one version I have, I removed all the Kunark & Velious zones (to add later when those expansions are added) - and I got my install down to 700MB. I know that Secrets got his down to something ridiculous like 300-350mb, but with some SERIOUS loss of normal gameplay (no sound for one, and I think loss of certain spell effects)

I was thinking about making another version that would allow you to change the drive through a user-entered variable at the beginning of the script. That would then fix the need to worry about having to do a search-replace on the script. I may still do this if it's needed.

Does this remove zone files? I already had issues with the first Capture the Flag GM event because the thread on upgrading your textures has you remove all the .s3d's - one of which was PoTimeA - the zone where the CTF happened. It did not let me zone. So much sure you remember this if you ever get stuck in a similar situation.

This worked well for me however with the default titanium ui I now get a xml error and my ui setup from the original eq folder did not come along for the ride...

Just an FYI. Deleting the files in this list causes some pretty wacky strings in a few places, like the OptionsEditor.exe and when quitting the game just to name a few.

My money is on the eqp_strings.xml (and possibly eqp_config.xml). Gameplay (or strings within the game) are not affected. I'll be restoring those 2 files later tonight when I get home to see if it resolves the problem.

Deleting those files have no effect. The eqp_strings is for the Everquest Patcher launcher. We're NOT using that. We're completely bypassing it and executing eqgame directly.

EQP = EQPatch




The problems you're experiencing with OptionsEditor are caused by something else.

This is awesome. Works perfectly. Only thing I would change is designating the USB Drive a full time drive letter.

If you know how, awesome. If not a quick reference is open the command prompt and type compmgmt.msc
Open Disk Managment
Right-click on your drive and select Change Drive Letter.
I changed my 2gb usb to the Q:\ drive.
works great no matter which port I plug into.

Could someone take the eqlite zip (after running it and creating the 1.35gb zip) and torrent it? Or split it up into 3 or 4 chunks and host it on megaupload (or similar)?

license.txt is the EULA, I'm not sure if it can be removed, but License_english.txt can be removed without any harm to the gameplay.
and I removed loghelp.txt from my install because it is technical support and billing issues. it hasn't given me any problems removing that

@DevGrousis - you have to have an install of the full Titanium client running on Project 1999, and then you run my script (after you point the script to your local install) and it will strip out all the crap from the Titanium install (which is approx 4GB in size) and shrink it to about 1.4GB instead - fully usable with only Project 1999 (up to Velious).

It can go much smaller if you want to remove Kunark & Velious, Sound files, Map files, and other misc things -- but then you'd have to test and retest it alot. This is the most stable and compatible format of a "EQLite" client.

Yes I have a full install set up on my C: and I use EQLite to copy the required files to a RAMDisk (I have the spare memory so might as well have instant load times :D) and everything works fine, all the high res textures are present.

I've had some problems running this so far. I have my Titanium copy installed on my D drive, so I changed your batch file accordingly, but once I run the file its finished within a few seconds. The new EQLite folder is in my C root directory, but it's empty! Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

try moving the batch file to the same directlory. That worked for me and a few others people having your same problem. I think it was posted a page or two back.

For future reference, an easy way to troubleshoot what's going wrong with your script is to add a pause command after the first few lines. Then when you run the batch file you can see what lines are giving errors or not functioning properly.

I'm pretty sure you will find that when you run the script, the directory is not being found and that's why the script finishes so quickly.

Had some troubles getting EQ to run last night, but it wasn't anything to do with missing files.

Realized that EQ doesn't like odd wide screen resolutions of some monitors, such as mine that is 1440x900. Had to change desktop resolution to 1280x1024, load up EQ. Then exit out, and could change back to 1440x900, and EQ would then load in 1280x1024.

Had to do the same thing on my laptop that runs 1366x768. :)

It takes up more space but you can delete the old one... alternatively you can use the program in my signature one of the options is to shrink the install.. run it and just run that option it will delete all unnecessary files.

Well it looks as though my tool is quite obsolete and frivolous compared to Duxa's tool. Either one will work, but his is far more refined and multi-faceted than my simple script.

And yes vznos, it makes a copy of your original directory but stripped down. Then you can delete the old one afterwards.

The way I have done this is I used Duxas to cut it down and fix the maps then I ran EQLite from there (it shaved off a little more size that way) I could have done it the other way around I think as well. But my maps are now correct and then for pure aesthetics I downloaded the original Trilogy from Sony for free (http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/content.vm?page=Download) and took all of the .s3d files from there and installed them over my EQLite files lol (found that from Psycher's thread - http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=2482)
1.7gb install all together.
I prefer FatMagic's install to Duxas' because I can actual see what is going on. I can also modify it further from there if I feel the need to.

I just did a fresh install, updated my files to run p1999, ran the eq lite client .bat file, and moved it to my flash drive. Right now when I start up I do not see any servers to log in to. Any ideas?

I am connecting to the login server (5998) but not showing any emu servers.

When I run the modified shortcut from my c:\program files\sony\everquest folder, I am able to log in no prob.

Curious. Are you using a different shortcut to access the flash drive? I created a 2nd modified shortcut that I put on my Flash Drive.

I also use the EQEmu launcher, which doesn't need a modified launcher at all to work. Its works perfectly on my Flash Drive.

Raising this thread from the dead.

Had one report that the script might not work any longer? Can anyone with a full Titanium install confirm that the script still works? I will update the script if it's not working for some reason, but it should still work fine, as the EQ install hasn't changed at all - only the location you installed it in.

I don't have a full Titanium install any more, I only have my EQLite version that I use everywhere. If I can scrounge up my Titanium install, I'll test it out later.

I just tried to run it though and my destination folder for the lite install is empty. I think I saw someone else with that problem in thread so looking to see what I did wrong.

Yeah just remember to read the instructions in the BAT file when you edit it. You just have to manually enter the path to the EQ Titanium install.

I tested the script a couple weeks ago on a full version of Titanium, and it worked perfectly.

If it's still trying to copy from C: it sounds like you didn't save the bat file, or you're using the wrong one. If you change it in the BAT file, and you verify that it's saved, it absolutely cannot pull from C - what you see, is what you get on that BAT file. I'm confused how it could do something other than that.

Possibly consider copy & pasting the script into another TXT file and creating your own BAT with the new file path - just to make sure?

This is a great utility but it is currently pruning all but one of the growth files. The other files need to be kept as well as Plane of Growth is a Velious zone. I've noticed a few people on the beta server complaining about being unable to zone in and all of them have used this utility.

Fixed and amended on my script! To anyone who already ran the EQLite script, you will need to find the full install of Titanium and copy all "growthplane_" files over to your EQLite script. Sorry for the missed files!

Just to be sure, I had six files that started with growthplane. That sound about right? (One was already in there as Schortt mentioned)

Thanks for starting the project. I run EQ from a ram disk, so reducing the size of the EQ directory helps a lot.

For anyone using linux, attached is a bash script to remove unused files. I had to give it a .txt extension in order to upload the file, fyi.

I noticed that the manual instructions were not updated to include growthplane files. I went through the manual steps myself and noticed that coyotes in steamfont mountains didn't have the correct model (they appears as human males) when the growthplane files were missing.

Just updated the manual instructions. There were a few frivolous files I still had on that list. It also didn't include the Plane of Time files! So now it does! You might want to go back and make sure to include the PoTime files. Check my manual list. You may want to double check it against your bash script to be accurate.

Oh, right. PoT files are already included. Earlier, I forgot to mention those were also missing from the manual instructions.

Something I did different in the bash script was to include the equipment files for future expansions, frogequip.s3d, gatesequip.s3d, omensequip.s3d, etc. They were relatively small. And I figured that GMs might be equiping items from later expansions, so I kept them in the directory so I could see them, just in case.

A friend who was setting up EQLite had an issue where the launcher script contained in the p99 patch zip's was not copied over to C:/EQLite. I can't confirm since I don't use the script (don't use windows), but this is something you may want to double check.

However, I had to change:
cd E:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest
to

It will copy any file ending with .ini. For instance; eqclient.ini.

You could just change it to:
for /f %%i in ('dir /b ^| findstr /i ".*project1999.ini$"') do (
xcopy %%i "%eqlite_dir%"
)

That would only copy the character specific ini files for that particular server. I do think that copying all ini files should be OK though. :)

Confirming that the batch file is working, you need to run it outside the Everquest directory, and make sure to edit the batch file by adding /d before the location of your install. From 4 gigs down to 1.4 sweet, thanks OP and all the peeps in the forums especially mr.p for his solution to the problem.

Can I get confirmation that this doesn't remove any files needed for Velious zones/textures or anything like that? Not sure if its been updated post-Velious or not. Last change log date I see is 03/09/2014. Trying to cut down my P99 folder to try out a Ramdisk.

Yes, it should include everything for Velious (unless the P99 staff has added or kept additional zones that I'm not aware of).

You're running this from within Wineskin, right?
If you're at a CLI in Wineskin, and you're at the root folder of the Windows installation, what do you get back when you type 'cd' and press enter?

Whatever it's returning is what your path format should look like in the batch script. Running scripts is all about system and/or user context.

So if you get back this for the root of C: in Windows:

Some_Drive:\

...then your script should look like this:


cd\
set eqlite_dir=Some_Drive:\EQLite
mkdir "%eqlite_dir%"
cd Some_Drive:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest


Note that you need to update the path to the EQ program files directory, as well as the path in the eqlite_dir variable as well.

Actually just tried it today. Unfortunately it deleted "mss32.dll", and it wouldn't even start without it. So I replaced the file from my original, but then it crashed after the loading screen (with no message).

So, it seems it's being it bit too aggressive in what it deletes.

Is there a list of contents not needed in the EQ directory? I'm running EQ on mac using wine and fear trying to copy directories over or anything like that. I would like to remove files not needed. Thanks.

Welcome! I just tested the old script and it still works fine. You'll still want to apply the current patch to be safe, as I don't believe my script copies over the "Launch Titanium" BAT file.

For some reason when I run the BAT it gives me an empty EQlite folder. The titanium install directory is correct but I still get an empty folder.

Script is working for me. Don't forget that you will have to add another line under "cd" if the source path is on a different drive than your OS. Here's my config for my games drive (L drive) with OS on C:

cd\

REM ************
REM CHANGE THE "eqlite_dir" DIRECTORY BELOW IF YOU WANT TO INSTALL EQLite to a DIFFERENT DIRECTORY (i.e. C:\EQLite)
REM ************

set eqlite_dir=L:\EQLite

After running this, my Shurikens show as bags when thrown. Any idea what was removed that needs to be restored to show them as Shurikens again?
