Can someone please just verify what exactly is going on?

I've read about ddos and rmt's and duping and such, but I have absolutely no idea what any of that is or how the people who are doing this are accomplishing it. What exactly is going on that is causing the server to crash so much recently?

Only thing most people know otherwise is that there are indeed ddos attacks happening.
