it's impossible to avoid when there is only a single product for sale on a market, this is why they are "public utilities" - no private entity can be allowed to control them. This is 'necessary socialism' - or 'socialism for national security', lol that's how they should sell socialism to the conservatives.
will add, even the states with single supplier utilities have alot of regulation of what can or can't be done, how or why etc.
so it's still a company or multiple all working underneath the gov't authority, in theory anyway.
they take their 'profits' that they were allowed to earn in providing the utility, then they don't reinvest into their means of production and conveyance and Maui catches fire.
or the water lines under roads collapse, I know of a few places in my area where there are STILL wooden water lines that were installed 100+ years ago
nobody wants to pay to replace them, not even the customers who claim to be concerned with the quality of their water
