I am bringing up a Mage and was wondering how they fair doing these challenges. I can see who has done the challenges and only see a few mages is why I ask.

Likely not all that well. The issue is that you lack root, though woolly spider nets can take care of that you'll likely burn through an entire pack really quickly.
I have an epic mage, and while the pet can solo pretty well (spend a bit of time in chardok and sebilis), the combo shines with a cleric -- or to a lesser extent a shaman. Imo, it's the most potent combo right after sham/monk. If a mob can't be slowed then it's the most potent combo period.
For solo mages aren't that great. For duo they are pretty damn awesome
