Got a few that I like just cant name them of the top of my head. People make music now days with oldschool 8bit sounds. There called Chip Tunes or 8Bit music. Some of the songs sound pretty cool. Bitshifter is a popular 8bit artist.

As far as writing goes, I would have to say that one of the originals is the best:
Super Mario Brothers Theme (Original) Sounds janky as shit, but when you take that same music and perform it for real, it transforms: Boston Symphony Orchestra - Super Mario Brothers Theme Ulu - Super Mario Brothers Theme ..now that's some jazzy shit. Harder you say? NOT ENOUGH MARIO?!?!? OMG!!! I had years of nightmares with this as the background music: The Legend of Zelda - Death Mountain Theme

How can no one have mentioned Frank Klepacki's stuff for C&C?! Also, best NES tune by far. It plays during the intro of MTG2, be sure to give it a go as it's fucking awesome.
