Default EQ wont start - DSETUP.dll is missing

Two days ago I had mentioned (with few details) that EQ is not launching for me.

Background - I played EQ for a few years and always launched it through EQEmu. Eventually, I followed a process that let me just open into P99 by opening my eqgame.exe file which worked fine. I do not remember deleting any game files during a PC "cleansing rage" at any point, but that does not mean it is outside the realm of possibilities!

Symptom - When I double click eqgame.exe I get the following:

eqgame.exe - System Error
The program can't start because DSETUP.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

Is this salvageable? Do I just need to update the code? Or, do I need to delete it all and try to figure out how to get it on my PC again. Many thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply Thulack. I just read the thread you sent me to and though they're discussing my issue, I didn't see what the solution was? I'm not the tech savyist guy.. did I just miss it?

I'm actually finding plenty of some google searches for the file name now.

Unfortunately, it seems I'm going to have delete everything and try to figure out how to DL the game again.

what antivirus do you use? it most likely "Ate" dsetup.dll. p99 has a custom dsetup.dll which antiviruses sometimes delete due to potential security risks.

just go into your antivirus program and tell it that dsetup.dll is a safe file. Then download the latest patch, unzip it, and copy/paste all of the files into your EQ folder (overwrite everything when asked). -

Hey Grimjaw, thanks for the suggestion, that sounds like a much better process than trying to figure out how I ever got this thing working in the first place!!

I'll let you know the results once I attempt it.

So close!! The game now loads to the Log In Screen. The first time I entered my UN and PW it said timed out, the second time it told me "DB Error - Invalid Password".

Not sure why that would be, I've always used the same UN and PW, it's the same one for my account on this site. Is there a PW reset option by chance?

hmm that's a bit of a strange one. i doubt its password related. i suggest first just try creating a new LoginServer account over at eqemulator.net

each eqemulator.net forum account lets you make 3 LoginServer accounts per forum account over there (eqemulator.net)

Once you have a fresh LoginServer account try it on the server and see if you get the same result, or if your the new one works.

That's what i'd try first.

Also the reason why Thulacks response was close but not correct is because he skipped the technical aspect of dsetup.dll (antiviruses eating it) and he went straight into the ethical side of it (untrusted file from p1999)

SUCCESS!!!

I used the PW reset on this site and it worked!!! Thanks so much for sticking with me on this one! This topic can close! Oh, and I'm Level 18, the next thing I need to do is update my signature apparently!
