They talk about how difficult it is to self-gear a melee.... but that's the fun!!
Many have already done this grind once back on live, and it was a long and arduous journey. Several more had to do it again when P99 first went live. So I'd imagine these days, when given the chance to just BUY half-decent gear and save yourself some time and energy, people are going to opt for that.

That said, good job OP on the journey and the stories. Reminds me of when I first started EQ many, many years ago. I can still remember my character advancement and a lot of the milestones all these years later.
