You could always check if anyone's guild is going after Phinigel Autropos in the near future and follow them down; I mean, if they need to clear the route anyway, it's going to make the whole thing easier for you.

I got the bone on my pally in the mid 40s. it's a fun quest and the 65DD proc is fun but not exactly powerful.
You will need help. A shaman is probably the best class as they can cast invis, EB, and have a pet.

1) Invis down to Phinny's room (I did this when he wasn't up)
2) Swim over to the wall opposite of the entrance on your paladin
3) Shaman pet up and /guard it in the room and target a seahorse
4) Shaman swims out of the room as far as they can get before their pet will stop listening to it's commands
5) Sic pet on guard and spam the crap out of /pet back off
Once you see that the guards are far enough away and on the pet swim down to the very bottom and stay there.
6) Once pet dies, shaman gates.
Stay down at the bottom until they reset. Then once they're reset find the ground spawn and WC cap out.

I found that I was completely safe at the bottom of the pit even after the seahorses reset. It actually took me about 5 minutes of swimming around to find the ground spawn and pick it up. I was very careful and had my finger on the WC cap hotkey the whole time.

That's how I did it. Gating to the entrance is an even safer way to do it if you want.
If you still need the bone, find me on Torog, Erevan, or Haela. I'm on around 9am EST.

We followed a similar strat. I tagged the furthest horse with my skipping stone and immediately started casting gate. Unfortunately, the DDs they started casting hit me at the zone line, but it was plenty of time for Sage to get in there and look around for the bones. Phinny was not up, otherwise he would not have had such a leisurely opportunity to search.

One dead druid, but the bones were found!

Plan A failed. But Grel died for my sins so that I could swim down.

Took me forever to find the damn things.
