Ned wasn't exactly the sharpest crayon in the tool shed either though. There's a reason Stannis got the F out of KL when Jon Arryn died, and there's a reason Renly got his boys and got the F out of KL as Robert Baratheon was dying. Ned also sent half his men away with Beric Dondarion to bring Gregor Clegane to justice for raiding in the Riverlands. And to top it all off, he trusted Littlefinger.
