It's a sign of the emerging culture being one that has no interest in bettering themselves. Any criticism they see as an attack, due to being raised without having any discipline in their lives. The end result is people never leave the mental state of childhood, even when they are technically adults. Battleship Troopers (the book obviously, not the movie) called it.

We're pretty fucked.
Starship Troopers.

And it's not that they don't have an interest in bettering themselves, it's that you're not the boss of me. Everyone gets a trophy, win or lose, everyone's special, helicopter parents, gotta have a cell phone and credit card for little Jimmy in the 7th grade, and my own brother still lives in mom and dad's basement at 40.

Why the hell should they improve?

It doesn't help when school divisions bend over backwards to avoid lawsuits because Little Billy is special ('cause Mommy says so!) and you cannot fail him! The teachers are clearly picking on him! And stop marking with red pen, it's damaging to children's egos! etc...

A huge problem is the parents instilling this idea on their children that they're special while at the same time neglecting to raise them properly and leaving that job for the TV and/or video games. Parents don't care like they used to.
Simulpost on the same subject, well done [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

Going to have to agree here. The world and system on how we raise our kids is getting pussified.

I threw a fit in public when I was a kid I got my ass beat and everyone in the store knew it and knew I deserved it. You do that shit today you get CPS called on you and your kid taken.

Hell, you cant even do a simple bottom pat anymore to let your kid know, with out people giving you a dirty look.

Oh, sure, nothing new overall, just getting to epic proportions now.

Personally, I blame the WW2 generation. I keep hearing things like, "We did it so our kids would be better off". Well are they? No.

Hank Hill had it right when he was asked if he wanted his son to cut himself with a real knife??? Well, maybe a little bit.

I HATE the Blue Ribbon Society we've got now. Not everyone needs a participation ribbon, seriously. Who cares if the child is upset? They'll get over it.

/em shakes head.

I have no idea why spanking is such an issue nowadays. I know in Sweden that sort of stuff is banned, and their rates of childhood delinquency, suicide, and dropouts have declined greatly since the ban was put in place, but I doubt that would have an effect on attitudes in the rest of the developed world. /shrug.

In regards to CPS, I don't know how it is in the States, but here in Canada the Child Social Services agencies look for a pattern of abuse (e.g., a pattern of physical and emotional abuse towards a child) that is not related to a form of punishment (within reason). Spanking once in a while? CPS won't do anything. Spiral fracture? Improperly healed bones? Injuries that go unreported? Then they'll step in.
