I made my first techno song today lol. (link)
So I'm trying to hone my skills at producing tracks using fruity loops, this is my FIRST actual song that ties everything together into some kind of coherent mess.
I didn't use any pre rendered riffs, every beat and every note I put in myself, and tried to find the right mix to make it sound ok but I think the bass and beat is pretty shit, and maaaan did this ever take awhile to actually make hahaha. Lemme know what you think! Criticism of things I need more work on and suggestions are very very welcome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-ACc4CyKJ8

Dude you need to shape your sounds, use filters and eq on them (seperately) - stay away from cheeseball effects unless you make a really dry mix, but it honestly sounds like you just took a bunch of stock sounds and put them together, which is COOL but not great..
better video with beardyman doing what he really does best, also some fluteboxing [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] (shit gets gangster at 12:45 lulz)

I messed around with fruity loops a long time ago (I prefer using actual devices with knobs and sliders though).
Take advantage of the sampling capabilities. Just grab random sound clips, add effects to them and cut em up in weird ways. Even if you aren't an amazing composer ( I sure as hell am not) you can make your music sound fresh and original simply by using unorthodox sound sources. And Hasbinbad is right, filters help alleviate some of the monotony in most electronic music. Fruity loops is definitely a great place to start if you want to make music on a computer. It's very user friendly and easy to master. Keep it up man! | ||

I honestly prefer pro tools, but it's much harder to get to a point with that program (and any associated hardware) from both a knowledge and skill standpoint, to where you could produce even the simplest beat.. ..but once you start to develop that knowledge and skill, it blows away EVERY other software - by far, no contest. It's not even debatable. Logic Audio is the only suite that comes close, or a combination of Cakewalk or Cubase along with Soundforge software, but Protools does it better in each situation. Totally worth the investment if you begin to get serious about making music on a computer setup.
