For fans of heavy metal [Lot of Youtube links]
Traditional heavy metal, which includes NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal)
Judas Priest. The second most important band to metal after Black Sabbath. Sinner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrdEuEWBIFQ Motörhead. Lemmy didn't consider his band to be metal and I can see why but they are inseperable from metal. Their influence cannot be overstated. Stay Clean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvScReIRZOA Rainbow Stargazer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVXy1OhaERY Scorpions. Not a metal band but they had metal songs. SPEED METAL
A very natural evolution from traditional metal, spurred on by Motörhead in particular. Can be seen as a sort of transitional subgenre, from which thrash and power metal would spring directly and death and black metal indirectly. Difficult to find a pure speed metal band. Exciter Violence & Force https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdnkCMVzusI Agent Steel Agents of Steel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdCwdfjMqHg Razor Killer Instinct https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5-iqmpUEsY Helloween. Beginning of European power metal Murderer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNsCdUok7lc Slayer. Already thrash metal but the speed metal was still strong. Pre-Reign in Blood Slayer is best. THRASH METAL
Evolved from speed metal, Venom, Motörhead, hardcore punk... Chose songs based on variety and somewhat lesser known bands. POWER METAL, American
When the term 'power metal' is used it mostly refers to the dominant and most widespread style that developed in Europe. There was an American power metal scene though, quite distinct from the Euro version. Very thrashy and some bands shared the scene with thrash bands. POWER METAL, European
Where thrash metal took traditional and speed metal in a darker, more aggressive direction, power metal took it in the other direction. Very apparent in the European version. They sing about dragons and wizards and shit. 95% cheese genre. Helloween. The originators. Kai Hansen would one day not suck as a vocalist Ride the Sky (Speed metal influence still strong) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug_JdOQDxwY Helloween I'm Alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heZQVYvHPsc Blind Guardian I'm Alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6OXS9YRpCs Kamelot (American band but definitely Euro styled) When the Lights Are Down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLR5k8jedyc Running Wild Riding the Storm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTlhUfBLKlM

DEATH METAL
Grew out of thrash metal, Venom influence and bands that only be called 'extreme metal' in my opinion (ie. Hellhammer). Very much an American genre. Death. The first and still one of the best. Forgotten Past https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0yZ7elqyKc Morbid Angel Suffocation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltRrzyggNao Autopsy Pagan Saviour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr9sdori58U Pestilence Dehydrated https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj5Ajt3r5xA Obituary Gates to Hell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHGaMJTQai0 Incantation The Ibex Moon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1aMhfvumas Atheist Brains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmZ_hx2wJV4 Immolation Higher Coward https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFTh-Dew6e4 Cryptopsy Crown of Horns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYv269-HcqU Most modern death metal is soulless, cold and terrible. BLACK METAL, First wave
The so-called first wave of black metal is more a collection of music that would end up influencing the so-called second wave of black metal or more accurately simply black metal. Most "first wave" bands can be tied together by the fact they used Satanic lyrics/imagery and nothing more. The actual music often has a base in speed, thrash or death metal. Chose songs based on how 'extreme' they were. Venom is incredibly important yet again. Hellhammer Messiah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjY6CQp70NQ Tormentor Elizabeth Bathory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7AtgbonKEk Kreator Tormentor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjTWJNhfnDo Sodom Blasphemer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeAh1yjVRAA Mayhem Deathcrush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfCHwsp9bSc Sepultura Troops of Doom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unHDxVXEB9o Sarcofago Nightmare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSqKbwNjL_I

BLACK METAL, Second wave
The Norwegian scene. Turned black metal into an actual subgenre. Influenced by Venom, the "first wave", speed metal, thrash metal, death metal and most importantly by the band Bathory. Included Bathory songs here because of how much important they were. It's partially introductory. Didn't spent much time selecting songs. Too much effort [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
Still need to go into doom metal and its derivatives and doomish metal. Folk metal, industrial and prog. Fuck groove metal. If there are some metal fans here it could be interesting to go deeper into certain styles. For death metal for example you can focus on technical styles, 'brutal' styles, old school styles, styles that fuse it with prog, the swedish stuff etc. Can dedicate a very long post to each single style. Post some bands/songs if you'd like. What does yee fancy in metal? I'd say my favourites would be traditional, thrash and black metal.
