The wife and I quite often have to because the professionals are so damned useless at it. In my entire adult life, I have never walked into a doctor's office or hospital with an unknown problem and had them figure it out. Either I know what's wrong when I walk through the door, or them and their multi-million dollar diagnostic machines are baffled, too. In the wife's case, she had some unknown issue successfully diagnosed exactly twice, otherwise it's been her own efforts, too. The only people who have a great deal of trust for the medical profession are people who've either never been sick or folks who work in the industry and eat its self-adulation day in day out.
The medical field is usually pretty good at fixing stuff once they figure out what's wrong, but man alive do they ever suck at step 1.
