Since you have a fungi you should know about the differences. Their play style differs quite a lot. So, do you want a mediochre damage dealer that can sow and track or a group tank that can rez later on?

Of course with a fungi a ranger can be a group tank for a long time as well.

Rangers are an excellent support class, can single pull in any outdoor zone like Mistmoore, City of Mist, Karnors, using harmony, can root CC and snare. Velious brings some great attack buffs to the picture as well as some pretty sweet disciplines, and to top it off they get some of the best class specific gear in the game. Its a long road but if played right rangers can be a really fun class to play and be very useful in groups. Cheers.

When I see a 60 ranger, I am seriously impressed. When I see a 60 Pally or SK, I am impressed. Anything else - meh.

Good replies so far. Yea I have a 55 druid, 55 necro, and a 51 cleric. I played a monk and bard on live for years so I was looking to play something fun. I never played a tank before so I was leaning toward pally but I know rangers have a little more utility so I was torn.

I've been thinking about maybe rolling a hybrid, and I'm kind of leaning towards ranger.

First, I think Rangers are somewhat better at 60. With Warrior level attack skills, Call of the Predator boosting your group's melee output by 4-5%, and a decent Velious weapon like Nevederia's Claw (11/17; I see Nikkanu selling loot rights in EC) you can bring pretty substantial damage. Plus Snare makes an enchanter's life much easier in all of these high MR Velious dungeons, and Tracking is pretty useful. Meanwhile Paladin stun/root trails off against 55+ NPCs, and for the really high level stuff you want a warrior tank anyway. For the medium level stuff, just have the Shaman tank.

Second, although Paladins feel a bit more powerful when leveling, I like small groups and it's hard for me to find a great composition there. A Paladin's natural pair is the shaman (nearly full raid buffs between them, massive aggro for getting stuff slowed immediately) but you will need to add 2-3 DPS classes due to the Paladins' low output there. PAL+SHM+ENC is a powerhouse, but that's true with practically any class in the melee slot. Meanwhile Ranger/Shaman is a completely respectable duo on it's own.

That's like asking: Death or Life? ^^

On a serious note though either tank fine while leveling, both have fantastic cc abilities, ranger offers more deeps and utility, paladin offers more stability. Boy are fantastic classes and both are a blast to play.

No help, I know! If you have a fungi though I'd throw it on a ranger. If you've a mana stone to pair with it though, then paladin ^^
