Default Gnoll Fang Exp in Qeynos

Credit Goes to BarakObooma for this research. Truthfully, I just noticed the frenzied approach other players take to this zone, and its acidic effect on the community while playing there. Now its obvious that there is a reason why.

Currently, as implemented, gnoll fang turn in to Captain Tillman in Qeynos renders too much experience. This leads to slumming by higher level characters in a zone meant for characters generally between 5 and 16. The exp should fall closer in line with other newbie quests that are relevant to their starting dungeon

As it stands today, it can be proven that 300 fangs will take a player from level 12-level 20

There's a post from 2001 where a Dwarf Paladin said he went from level 6 to 7 on one stack of fangs.

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=2878

"this is an excellant quest for newbies in quenos...when you get to 5th lvl go to blackburrow and save the fangs (they stack)..and when your not busy or you go to quenoys to sell loot complete it.good exp i went from lvl 6 to lvl 7 with 1 stack (includes doing the moonstone part)

Daldane
9 pally Dwarf"

Level 6 would take 91,000 experience x 40% penalty = 127,400 experience needed. Divided by 20 fangs, that would mean each fang = 6370 experience which is less than 1/3 of what it currently is (19-20k each).

Clearly something is amiss here. Please take a look.

I do not believe hybrid penalties apply to quest exp.

A stack of gnoll fangs at level 6 now would take you well beyond one level. Would me creating a paladin newbie and turning in 20 fangs showing the amount of exp gained in comparison help?

Hi Nilblog,

We acknowledge that the experience per fang is the same regardless of race/class/etc. What we're saying is comparing a 2001 example from ZAM to my character's current experience turning them in shows that the fangs are giving 3x as much experience as they were back in classic.

My comparison was comparing a 2001 Dwarf Paladin who went from level 6 to 7 on one stack of 20 gnoll fangs.

I compared this to my 22 Ranger: For a 22 Ranger it took exactly 100 fangs to go from 22 to 23 (1,387,000 x 1.4 = 1,941,800 experience needed to level – divided by 100 equates to the 19-20k per fang estimate).

Level 6 would take 91,000 experience base x 40% penalty = 127,400 experience needed. Divided by 20 fangs, that would mean each fang = 6370 experience (back in 2001) which is less than 1/3 of what it currently is (19-20k each).

It's hard finding examples for it on ZAM because they don't even list the Qeynos quest, only the Halas one (which was always trash experience).

Forgot to put the original post (2001) link. Note also that it says that the level was turning in the full stack plus the moonstones which would give even more experience although that quest gives minimal. I may make a level 1 and test to see how much experience the moonstone quest gives. A lot of people don't bother with it and sell them to the vendors.

Gnoll Fang exp on this server is classic.

Quote:
I found that for about a level 5 character the exp gotten from the teeth things hels alot. I turned in 12 teeth to captain Tillin on the balcony and I went up a full level up to level 6.

My Bar. Shm as a lvl 7 could lvl to 8 with just 10 Gnoll fangs. It's a very good and useful quest and i highly recomend everyone going to Black Burrow not only to lvl from the gnolls but als to lvl with the gnoll fangs. Very easy.
Seems like people report varying degrees of exp gains. Another guy says it took him 93 to get a level. It's dubious to base all your claims on one Alla post.

I think the exp gain is fine and classic as it is. The part I'm pretty sure is not classic is the exp doesn't really bottom out for this or the other high exp newbie quests. I tested it quite a while back, and at level 35 clearing the zone (late night when zone was empty, no newbies were harmed in this test) you could average about ~30 fangs for 1 clear. Turn that in and it was like 4-5% of lvl 35 (hell level). Also when I was 99% into lvl 49, just for fun I bought up like 10 cb belts to see what would happen. Ding 50. I have no idea if that part is classic or not.

Thanks for the link. The guy stated at level 13, he turned in 87 gnoll fangs and got 4.5 yellows.

Let's do the math.

Level & XP Needed To Level (without class/race mods)
1 1000
2 7,000
3 19,000
4 37,000
5 61,000
6 91,000
7 127,000
8 169,000
9 217,000
10 271,000
11 331,000
12 397,000
13 469,000
14 547,000
15 631,000
16 721,000
17 817,000
18 919,000
19 1,027,000
20 1,141,000
21 1,261,000
22 1,387,000
23 1,519,000
24 1,657,000
25 1,801,000
26 1,951,000
27 2,107,000
28 2,269,000
29 2,437,000
30 5,311,000
31 3,070,100
32 3,274,700
33 3,485,900
34 3,703,700
35 8,215,600
36 4,537,200
37 4,796,400
38 5,062,800
39 5,336,400
40 12,017,200
41 6,397,300
42 6,717,100
43 7,044,700
44 7,380,100
45 16,835,800
46 8,695,400
47 9,081,800
48 9,476,600
49 9,879,800
50 10,291,400
51 23,976,500
52 25,996,300
53 28,118,100
54 46,090,700
55 33,568,400
56 36,043,600
57 38,631,000
58 41,333,000
59 64,689,900
60 48,152,500

He didn't say what race/class he was so let's assume he has no experience penalties at all. He would need 469,000 experience to completely finish 13. He got through 4.5 out of 5 yellows which is 90% of the level. 469,000 x .9 = 422,000 exp gained. Divide that by the 87 gnoll fangs he used and you get 4851 exp per fang. This is 1/3 to 1/4 of what it gives now (19-20k each) which is similar to my other finding.

The post right below his. "I found that for about a level 5 character the exp gotten from the teeth things hels alot. I turned in 12 teeth to captain Tillin on the balcony and I went up a full level up to level 6."

Let's do the math. Again assuming no race/class penalties.

Experience needed from 5 to 6 = 61,000. Divide that by 12 fangs and you get 5083 exp per fang. Very close to the other two samples.
