Error 1017

So this has me stumped.

I'm getting the 1017 error after not even being able to log in for the longest time from my desktop.

-Laptop logs in fine from my wireless.
-Desktop was getting (A connection is required) message.
-I tried copying my laptop's working install to my desktop and the same thing happened.
-I finally managed to get my desktop to let me get to the log-in server. ( I port forwarded the 5998 and 9000 to my desktops IP ) Not sure why this changed anything because my Laptop has no setting in my router (never added any had it like 6 weeks)
-Start to connect to a server (any server) the screen blinks and goes back to log in.
-Did a clean install to a different folder and getting the same error.
-Turned off AVG no difference.
-Rebooted PC no difference
-Tried in safe mode with networking (Not an option because of no 3d support)
-My laptop on my wired connection can connect just fine.


Any ideas on what I can try?
(Same post on EQemu and I've got zero responses there)

From my limited knowledge of that error, I believe it was more to do with your windows information than your EQ program. Depending on whats easiest for you I would either try to do a system repair, a system restore to a previously useable date, or a complete windows reinstall. But, if you do a google search for error 1017 I'm sure you will be able to find more information about it.

I'm having a hard time remembering if I ever got Everquest to run on this machine. It's newly built and cant remember if I ever tried installing it. So a previously working date would be out of the picture. It's not like it just popped up.

All the 1017 error posts I have found are vague and some of them pertain to hosting rather than client issues. So it's been difficult thus far to find any solid information.

Are you overclocking on this Desktop? Stop if you are. Betcha it fixes the issue. I was unable to login for a while on my PC at home and it looks like that was all due to overclocking to 5.0Ghz from 4. Once I reverted I was able to log right in with no problems. It was silly to go to 5 anyways, there was a minor performance gain in my heaven benchmark, thats about it. EQ Hates this crap anyways. (Even though they have Viewport, which I dunno how I ever lived without, makes Nvidia Surround worth it in EQ)

I tried WinEQ and it was tanking as well.

No I'm not over clocking unless the Mobo and CPU combo are doing that out of the box. I'll have to check bios. It's a Sabertooth 990FX and AMD 8Core 4.0GHz I think I saw it pulling more than 4.0 at one point in time. I'll dig there when I wake up tomorrow.
(Thats the first bit of new info I haven't thought to look into)

Someone who was experiencing this issue discovered it was a problem with their hardware. Specifically, it was an issue with their motherboard. This may seem strange, but it only further reinforces a couple things:
Make sure EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF HARDWARE has a current driver
More info is needed for people who have error 1017's - ie, need more people hardware specs.

I suspect people having error 1017 are having similar issues to this. I very strongly recommend *not* overclocking anything on your computer in order to play EQ. It seems to cause a ton of problems that are very easily fixed by just resetting everything to default. Basically, if you're getting weird errors or otherwise having problems running EQ, please try to turn off any overclocking you currently have turned on. This has fixed problems for more than one person.

I went in and did some investigative research on what each option did. I had clicked "performance" but that didn't chance my clock speed. There was a setting that was on Manual instead of DOCP and once I changed it I saw the target clock speed drop to 4000Ghz from 4300Ghz and guess who can log in now??

Thanks for the help guys. Everything I've read said nothing about CPU overclocking and I always though my board was pushing the CPU just a little harder than stock.
