I don't even know if the light is required, it's mostly the water which you can cover in half-block stone slabs so you can walk over it but the field will still be watered. You can even make it wicked easy to harvest if you build it sloping down with the planted spots in channels so a bucket of water will send everything to a single spot on the bottom.

I don't get minecraft, im too old. I watch my nephews play and all I can think is, whats the point? but its minecraft there Is no point.

I feel the same way about GTA to be honest. I just like building fancy stuff in survival mode. I'd probably like creative mode more if I had an artistic bone in my body somewhere but eh...
