View Full Version : Need new playstyle
Hello all. I am definitely a casual player. I usually play a rogue or for the torture a pally, but due to a couple things in RL one of which is a new baby in the house I need to find a good class to play that I can go afk and solo with. Nobody wants a tank that says hey guys I have to make a bottle and change a diaper. What I am looking for is a good solo class, yet not requiring a lot of attention as well so that I can play when I am the only person at home to take care of things. Thanks for suggestions.
If you're looking to afk/solo, you really can't beat a wiz/druid.
2 minutes of playing while quadding, 20 min of downtime while mana regens.

I wouldn't rule out a necro. Feign death will help you a lot if you need to suddenly afk, and they're capable of splitting/soloing camps with a bit of effort.
Also, it never hurts to have a necro to make you some plat. Mine has been great for when I'm semi-afk. Iksars will level slower, but you'll enjoy that extra regen that others won't at 60 ;)
I should say (as I've just typed in another thread) that they're not great in Velious, but then there's no extra levels so you'd be fine in vanilla/Kunark all the way up :)
My rough levelling guide has been:-
11-19: Kurn's Tower
20-22: Lake of Ill Omen
23-26: Warsliks Woods at the giant fort
26-29: Bard in Feerott (near Innothule zone line - she drops cash, a lot of the others don't). Named sisters in OOT if I could get them.
30-34: Bit sketchy, remember doing some Highkeep guards and Halfling guards too. Some work at the Frontier Mountains giant fort.
35-49: SPECTRES! Go Feerott over Oasis, usually quieter and you can sell in skeleton form to vendors outside Oggok. Can also bank in skeleton form in Oggok.
49-50: Currently 50 and stopped - been going into the back end of Felwithe slaying guards there. 20pp a guard (sale of 2h sword) and chances on FS weps, 2-3pp cash, gems, etc. Fear kite is a winner.
...overall, great for cash camps. Can probably add in Lower Guk for camping some nice pixels as well if you can deal with all the young camp lawyers.

probably a necro or a wizard?
main thing stopping a wizard from being an awesome solo class is the amount of time spent meditating between kills, but if you have to AFK anyway then no big deal. :)
make it a dark elf so you can hide while AFK
I was in the same boat as you when I started last year. Had a newborn, wanted to play a class where i can afk randomly if need be. I decided to roll necro since they can solo 1-60 and can FD to make it easy to afk if baby was crying or needs a diaper change ect..
A wizard would have been perfect too. Quad mobs, afk for 15 minutes while you med. Also get the benefit of porting yourself around.

Any class that has FD, Monk etc, or Hide is good for doing RL thingies. Druid, Wizz, Necro, even Monk at lower levels can all solo great. I would not pick a class that you need to be in a group if you have to go AFK a lot like a Cleric, Warrior, Pally etc. As a Cleric you can't really even go Pee without half the group dying.

nah, you are going about it all wrong. roll a female elf-race cleric. flirt, and make lots of friends. and then, for the capper, always eventually wipe the group because you had to go take care of the baby for a few.
now *that* is classic eq.

The ultimate Solo/Afk class is druid/wiz as stated above, at least at level 35 +. Normally I do a quadkite and have to let mana regen for about 6-8 min to do it again safely (whithout clarity).
If you manage to get to level 47 and until 53, the ULTIMATE solo/afk spot is probably aviaks in TD, nothing aggro you while medding so you can safely do anything else even without hiding.

FD is a must
Lets say you pull 4 aviaks for a quad on that druid/wiz, then all of a sudden the baby starts projectile vomiting on the dog.. you're as good as dead. The only way around this would be to gate, but then its time spent running back.
I'd go nec personally

Wizards aren't an AFK class, that's ridiculous.
But I'm OOM so we'll pick this discussion up again in 20 mins, k?

Probably if looked that way. But man if you dont have even 6 minutes straight of playing, probably it wont matter anyway. But Yes, with a baby probably your best shoot is to roll an FD class.

well the necro, sk, monk, only work once they gain FD..
So unless you start them as a race who have hide, it's still going to be tough...
a wiz, you can power nuke something down in less than 30 seconds, and then hide if you made a dark elf...
but yeah.. it all depends.. :D
So needs to have either FD or hide or both. I posed the same Q in EC last night and some mentioned a DE Mage due to the simplicity of the class. Can hide. Will not be doing more attention requiring things like quadding. If baby starts having an issue (code brown) in the middle of a fight just cast a fresh earth pet and sick him on the target and you're good. They also mentioned in you are in guk make an air pet cuz they go invis? I am not completely certain of all the things about mages. Quite ignorant about that class actually. Any input on mages anyone? What are they good at? Is DE the best race? Can they handle just 1 mob at a time or can they handle a room in guk when they get higher by themselves? Kind of a stupid question considering one would probably not want to be in lower guk if afk's may be needed lol, but there may be times where my spouse will be home and I will be able to game it up.

There's also the People at the camp fire in Qeynos Hills @ 24-29ish.
And Dwarfs at the docs and the 4 or 5 near the druid ring in BB from like 30ish-36ish.
Also Ogres in Neriak and Guards in Freeport.
If real world experience helps your decision, telling your wife you just need one minute to finish your quad before you change a shitty diaper is *not* okay.

de mage wouldnt be bad, just remember to give you pet see invis before you hide and afk or hell deppo.
wiz/druid is a good idea, with the long downtime but as stated above you cant let a crying baby wait while you finish kiting.
FD classes are great but monk/sk require a lot of gear to solo efficiently.
Personally id say necro is your best bet, solos great, good survivability. and if the kid starts crying you can fd immediately even in the middle of a kite and go run to him without fear of dieing.

I am pretty fortunate. If wife is home and I am playing she is nice about it. For the most part I need the solo class for when I am alone with the baby. Got 6 weeks of paternity leave coming up starting at the beginning of May. Woohoo! Btw I made a necro and a monk and got them both up to 10. Still early to see how well I will like the class.
Although ymw, the shitty diaper part was funny. I think the time she might need help like immediately is if the baby is fussy and crying for more than a bit and she needs a break. I would probably get the look if I don't hop up and help no matter what I am doing. I understand and don't mind. I know if I am holding the baby and she cries for more than a minute I am starting to panic inside lol.
