Do what i did. Talk a person down on a 92 civic with 212k miles from 1500 to 1000. Ive had the car for 3 years now and have only needed to replace the gas pump which i did myself. then you have 14k to spend on some good bud and enjoy mooching off your parents while you can :)

Best advice in the thread by far, but I'd avoid 212k miles.
Find a good deal on a reliable model with 70k-90k miles.
Never buy a new car unless you really don't give a shit about value, or you're one of those people where part of your identity is wrapped up in the car you drive. Spend that money on real property if you don't own any yet.

Maybe try looking into a Scion tC. They are made by Toyota and look pretty sporty looking.
It shouldn't be too hard to find one for around 15k.
You can probably get one from around 2008 or 09 for around that price I think, maybe newer.

Acura TL
Acura TSX <love these

Subaru WRX <another goodie
Dodge Neon SRT4
Nissan Altima SE or SER < both good cars, ser is pretty good looking
Nissan Sentra
Nissan Maxima
Audi A6
Mazda 6
Acura RSX <good car
Honda Civic SI <98-2000 ish year models are really good cars and got some spunk
ill think some more later, its early as fuck. I know quite a bit about cars so holler at me if you need. domestic cars are more prone to giving you problems. i'm not a "ricer" just telling you how it is, plus most of them are fugly that are even comparable.

Duno where you live, but if you live by nj check njautoauction. I got 2 months ago the land rover lr3 2008 86k miles in white for $15999 cash. I had bmw 745 li 2004 before hand I bought from them. I always go couple years old with the same body but high end. My bmw up to this year looked brand new once i thru the angel eye leds in it. Im in process of throwing the leds on the current rover on mine and it will look brand new and cost a 1/5th the price.

Here's the most solid piece of advice you'll get:
Don't buy from a dealership. I never will.
I got my first and only car that I bought myself from an auction. You'll need to find someone who can make good recommendations for you and also purchase the car. Every car gets bid and won off the line, you don't get to test drive it, so you need someone competent inspecting each potential bid as it comes down the line.
I got a couple recommendations from my guy, and went to dealerships to test drive and figure out what we wanted to bid on. This was back in early '09, I ended up going with a Pontiac G6. I test drove a few '07 G6s with 50-70k miles, and the salesmen at dealerships were offering them at 18-19 grand, and to finance me a loan at around 14%.
I got an '08 G6 (exactly 35k miles) off the auction line for 10 grand flat, got my own loan at 3%, had to pay my guy $500 for his services, after everything was said and done I paid exactly $12,202 (10 for the car, 500 to the guy, then taxes, tag, and title) not including the 3% interest for two years. I would've been looking at over 20 if I had gone through dealership for the same model, but a year older and with double the miles. Not to mention how much more a 14% loan would cost than a 3%.
Also, I got to actually go to the auction with my guy, under the pretense that it was my first day working for him if anyone asked (not supposed to be at auctions unless you're licensed for it or working for someone who is). You'll never see a place like it, people of literally every single ethnicity are milling about, and every one of them sports greased back hair and a bluetooth in the ear.
We watched one G6 come down the line, and when we checked it out it smelled just terrible. Ended up going for 7 grandish to some guy who was bidding on a TV screen through the internet. He probably thought he was getting a sweet deal at the time. My guy told me, "that's why you don't bid through the internet."
EDIT: My guy gave me a great recommendation too, the insurance is dirt cheap for full coverage (and you have to have full coverage if you're financing it), it's up to almost 90k miles and I haven't had to pay for anything but oil changes thus far. I even took it in recently to get the brakes checked, cuz I always fuck that up and end up having to pay for rotors too. Surprisingly, the brakes are still fine, though I'll end up paying for rotors anyway when the pads wear because apparently they're rusty. Oh yeah, one taillight finally burned out when I was driving to see family back @ thanksgiving (spend <$2 at an auto supply store, and <2 mins out in the parking lot and that shit is fixed).
DOUBLE EDIT: Be patient. My guy asked for a list of things I wanted in the car, down to color and some pretty minute details. I got everything I asked for except a sunroof, and fuck a sunroof for the deal I got imo. Don't go yellow or red, those cars get pulled over more than anything else (flashy, attract attention).

How can your identify be wrapped up in what you drive these days? It's not really possible. Modern cars all look like soulless plastic heaps. If you really want comfort, you can find a pretty nice used Lincoln or Cadillac within your price range. The first car I bought when I was 18 was a lovely Cadillac Sedan de Ville and nothing I've owned since has been as comfortable.
Here's my general rule of thumb on the various makes. As a disclaimer I'll point out that I hate essentially all modern cars; as a rule they're too small, ride hard, and tend to be overweight for their size.
Fords will give you mostly trouble-free service until the engine self-destructs. Ford doesn't seem to know how to build engines anymore--they stopped building their good engines like the 302 V-8 or 300 inline 6 quite a few years ago. Every Ford owned by the folks I know has ended up junked due to engine troubles. For example, the last two Fords my wife owned, a Mercury Grand Marquis and a Lincoln Continental before it, both ended up junked due to the engines suffering massive failures. Ford's primary advantage is that they tend to have good sight lines making them well suited to shorter drivers and women. Their interiors tend to be the best-made of the domestics.
Chrysler doesn't know how to build quality transmissions. Don't buy one unless you budget for mid-life transmission replacement as part of the cost of ownership. The V-8 Chrysler 300's go fast, but ride hard, are cramped inside, get curiously bad economy, and are hard to see out of. They have Mercedes transmissions so they're the only Chrysler that's really worth looking at. They're okay if you're 6 foot tall or less.
GM builds good engines and transmissions, but everything else sucks. At least in my experience their cars will keep running longer than the other domestics, but little things are always breaking so they're best suited to people who don't mind turning a wrench. My wife and I both presently own Buicks and I'm frequently tinkering with them.
Don't buy ANY domestic compact. It's pointless. The Japanese simply build them better. I only suggest domestics for markets where the Japanese either don't exist (large cars) or are clearly inferior (trucks). You can buy a Japanese model and have a car that runs for decades with little more maintenance than needing oil changes, but that comes at the cost of driving a miserable little sardine can. Hondas are generally made a bit better than Toyotas, but watch out for the transmissions in some of the newer models. I desperately wish they'd start building large cars so I could ditch GM.
European makes are usually favored by snobs and people who want to impersonate snobs. As a rule they're expensive to buy and expensive to fix and tend to be small. I've never seen the appeal of them.
