Most definitely somewhere on the west coast of the united states, canada, or mexico. The pacific ocean is absolutely unparalleled as far as "the majesty of seeing the ocean" is concerned. WHERE on the coast you go is not so important, and much of it looks the same as much of the rest of it, but in particular, 200 miles north and south of san francisco on hwy 1 is absolutely beautiful. I make the drive up or down a few times a year just to see it again, and I live here.

Muir Beach and Goat Rock Beach are particularly stunning tho, should you end up near SF.

you want the placid waters of the gulf of mexico.
shorter drive , try panama city or destin fl, a longer trip would be clear water or Sarasota fl.
if you like big TX , go to galvenston island.

Galveston "beaches" are gross and basically just a little bit of mud between the sea wall and the ocean. The water is pretty nasty, too.
You don't really want to go to TX beaches anyway, but if you have to, visit Corpus Christi or South Padre.

Do not go to Myrtle Beach. That place is nasssstttyyy, made me throw up in my mouth the one time I went. Hence why we did Beach Week after high school graduation in the Outer Banks. Hilton Head has really calm waters, so I would recommend that since you have a 4 year old. Emerald Isle and Ocracoke are also really nice and not so built up.
Since I live in southeast Florida, my favorite spot is the west coast of Florida, sanibel or captiva area. The gulf is the place to be

Galveston is nasty. South Padre over Corpus if you're headed to TX. I'd visit Destin, FL over all the other recommendations tho

When did you go? Its been forever since I've been but used to love it.
Destin would be one of the nicer places you could go. St. Augustine has a lot of culture to it so its pretty neat although not near as nice. Tybee has Savannah right by so its also a neat place. Hilton head you can't go wrong with.

I live in columbia SC so i can tell you when this guy says myrtle beach sucks hes not kidding.
Its either a ghost town, or packed full of crackheads and mobs of college drunk frat boys.
Charleston is nice, just go to florida imo.

Joining the stay away from Galveston crowd. The water is muddy and the beaches are completely eroded. Houston isn't much for tourism unless you're big on seeing Johnson Space Center and the like.
South Padre and the more Southern Texas beaches, however, can be quite nice and inexpensive to visit though Florida is probably a better bet. If you get a chance to head to the Keys you can go snorkeling in some very nice places.
