My friend created this petition, I thought it was really interesting. His idea was to highlight the hypocrisy of the marijuana debate; why are cigarettes not even subject to the laws of the Controlled Substances Act?

There's a pretty clear difference between a mind-altering substance that impairs short-term memory, motor function, etc and smoking a cigarette. It's also pretty clear that one can acknowledge this fact while not endorsing prohibition.

Perhaps you've just smoked yourself stupid?

If the best argument the "legalize" movement has to mobilize popular opinion is to appeal for the expansion of the nanny state and banning of tobacco.. then God help us all.

Gonna get a ton of signatures, but no lawmakers will take the time to read it etc.

Nicotine fucks with your brain in a lot of ways you clearly don't understand.

Just because you don't get high doesn't mean it doesn't do anything. Fucking moron.

Keep smoking so you can die of cancer.

Lol, I know your default state is butthurt but try to calm down, kid.

I said tobacco was not a mind-altering (hallucinogenic) substance. Obviously it effects your body. It's understandable that someone who works as a deli slicer in his mid-30s isn't able to tell the difference I guess.

Also, I don't smoke cigarettes but it's cute that an obviously overweight person is trying to tell other people how to be healthy.

Well getting cigarettes classified as a Schedule 1 drug would definitely get tobacco to lobby on behalf of cannabis.

gotta look at who is benefiting the most to see if it will be legalized. tobacco being legal only benefits one group while marijuana being illegal benefits many groups.

All drugs should be legal and the state should provide REAL unbiased information on effects and harm that can be caused. Since they did this with cigs and everyone found out about cigarettes causing lung cancer the amount of smokers dropped dramatically. The amount of drug users has risen. Which policy works? Kicking in doors and sending people to jail or letting properly informed people make up their own minds.

I would think the hypocrisy is more in line with the legalization of alcohol, rather than nicotine.
However since alcohol is already a substance out of control, why add another with marijuana?

The real disgrace here is trying to demonize nicotine in hopes of glorifying marijuana. Nicotine is a controlled substance, in every way.

Leave it alone.

Except you've got two categories of marijuana uses :

1. Medical
2. Recreational

Medical should be containable and controlled - without prescription you get nothing.
Recreational is not controllable, other than tax. It's certainly not containable.

The former is something that may work and to some degree has worked - however there's other substances we can use beyond marijuana that will do the same job and not require smoking (wtf, whoever thought that was a good idea? It's not a treatment for an illness it's simply a pain reliever).

The latter is a scenario where practically anyone can get their hands on it, abuse it and affect society around them.

Does pot make you homicidal, nope. Does it make you commit vehicular homicide, yes.
Does drinking yes. Does nictone, no.

People SHOULD be able to police themselves, but in our world today, they don't.

so to highlight the hypocrisy of the cannabis debate, you want another substance added to the schedule 1 list that doesnt belong there. thats pretty retarded. maybe just do a petition that actually spreads facts about cannabis. "The Emperor Wears no Clothes" by Jack Herer, is a good place to start

and btw, as soon as big business have positioned themselves to monopolize and control the industry, cannabis will be legal. essentially we are waiting on Monsanto to lock down NL5, Skunk1, and HazeA&C. after that happens Monsanto will essentially own every hybrid thats been created since the late 80s / early 90s (when ever Shantibaba hit the scene really).

I'm not convinced;

"Monsanto and the Drug Policy Alliance are not the only entities leading the charge to regulate Cannabis through genetic engineering. As published in the September 2009 issue of the Journal of Experimental Botany, Researchers from the College of Biological Science of the University of Minnesota have identified the genes in the Cannabis plant that produce tetra-hydro-cannabinol (THC), claiming in a press release that it is “a first step toward engineering a drug-free Cannabis plant”. George Weiblen, an associate professor of plant biology and a co-author of the study, said “Cannabis genetics can contribute to better agriculture, medicine, and drug enforcement”.

“It looks like dope, but really it’s hope,” explains David Watson. What he means is that many of these plants have been specifically bred not to produce an intoxicating resin or hashish. Indeed, HortaPharm hopes to thwart the aims of the average recreational user.”

“Pharmaceutical companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars researching and producing medicines, but as soon as those medicines are given to patients, they can be improperly used,” Guy explains. “Patients might use too much, too little, or they might divert their medications to other people. For medications like cannabis that are controlled substances, it’s essential that medical personnel be able to monitor dosage patterns. Our devices are like a digital camera that records details of time, date and other particulars every time it is used.”

"For example, there are 60 different cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant. Many of which have been identified, genetically isolated and patented by both the U.S. government and other international companies for their medicinal properties. Though the underground and mainstream media in the U.S. around Cannabis tends to be exclusively focused on the psychoactive effect that is produced from the plants chemical compound known as THC. This has helped to create a culture of Cannabis plant breeders in the U.S. who produce strains with a very high yield of THC."

“How patented marijuana strains and medicines may threaten the re-legalization movement, curb information sharing, set up a monopoly for certain breeders and medicine producers and limit users to a more expensive and inferior product. Their economic value to the pharmaceutical houses which produce them will be directly proportional to the severity of the prohibition against the use of cannabis.”

"One has to wonder, if Monsanto’s Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Proposition passes in California this November, where are the strains going to come from to provide for the “statewide regulatory and commercial industry” called for in the initiative? In the initiative, the only legal Cannabis strains protected by law, are those derived from licensed dealers. If this new industry is to be in accordance with federal law, the only legal seeds that can be attained are from corporations that hold DEA permits for Cannabis production and importation into the U.S.. These permits have been monopolized by Corporations like Kenex, HortaPharm, and GW Pharma, all of which appear to be heavily influenced by the bio-tech seed industry."

“Terminator seeds are genetically engineered to produce a plant that will not produce viable seed, meaning that growers would be forced to go back to Monsanto each year to buy more seed stock to replant. Governments and public alike became wary of the concept when it was discovered that the terminator seed could possibly cross the species barrier, possibly spreading infertility among the plant kingdom like a disease.”

Hi Sirken, I'm disappointed to hear you calling the players retarded.

Do you have any idea how many petitions there have been about cannabis? And the White House has offered one response, and it has said that it refuses to offer another.

I think the petition is a wonderful idea. Once OP gets 10,000 signatures the White House has to offer a response, and what kind of hypocrisy-laden response could they possibly give that would justify tobacco still being legal?

Do you think the White House is going to say, "Well they have a point, Schedule 1 it is!"? No, they aren't going to kill a multi-billion dollar industry just because some law that has managed to not apply to tobacco since its inception.

No it isn't. Good observation.

I used to come here, even a year back to read up on what everybody was talking about while I was at work. But now, the conversation has just degenerated into such utter vitriol, it's not worth it.

EDIT:

It's off topic. Therefore nothing to do with the game. I think it's great that a GM will voice his opinion rather than sheltering it.

So because he disagrees with someone's opinion or idea he shouldn't be able to post in the off topic forum? If you're truly offended by Sirken saying an idea is "retarded" you are definitely not on the right server.
