Anybody want to comment about their favorite dungeons in eq and why they like them?

Want to also explore the best dungeons in other mmorpgs too.

My favorite dungeons are fully 3d and have lots of secrets and shortcuts. The dungeons I hate most are linear and flat. EQ has a lot of nice dungeons, but i've seen good ones elsewhere. My all-time favorite dungeons were in daggerfall. They were completely random. I loved that aspect of it. Granted, they were not as interconnected as some of the dungeons in eq, but since they were completely random (mostly), for me, that makes them the winner. Second to them I'd say diablo dungons, but they tend to be too linear. They're not very 3d. I have tried morrowind and like some of the dungeons in that, but I haven't played it much so there's a lot I haven't seen.

I thought this topic was worth a go. I don't really care if no one reads it.

I've heard Vanguard has some nice dungeons, but what about WoW or EQ2?

And rogue-likes. They have probably the best random dungeons. Like games based on nethack.

I'll always have fond memories of Ssra and VT since I am a masochist when it comes to raids. So many days and nights in EQ were spent sitting in Ssra tracking for Cursed trigger in the hopes of winning a belt, cloak, or tunic.

On my hate list are Qvic and Inktu`ta since they left me, as a healer, feeling so violated that I would sit in a cold shower shivering and snivelling for hours afterwards. Of course the gf and I would sometimes just go level our unknown alts when these targets were called...

As for other games, I dont think I have felt the same immersion in them as I felt with EQ so there aren't any real comparisions. I guess a fun one that does come to mind is The Shroud in DDO, but again it doesn't compare to the immersion I felt in EQ.

I dont really care for the party instances in WoW, but Icecrown Citadel is probably one of the coolest ones out there.

As for EQ, does Highhold Keep count as a dungeon? I loved that place so much.

There wasn't any particularly cool high level party instances for WoW, but a lot of the lower level ones were pretty cool IMO, loved Black Temple too.

1a. Lguk - Absolutely the most original dungeon creation of all, of all time.

1. Sebilis - flawless physics for such a BEAST example of 3d work.

yo im happy for you Sebilis and imma let you finish, but Lguk was the most original dungeon of all time! of all time!

Originally, warcraft had fairly extensive dungeons filled with lore and quests, just like EQ. Now, they're just linear loot pinatas with little to distinguish between them aside from graphics and boss abilities. Black Rock Depths, for example, is one most WoW players absolutely hate, but most former EQers absolutely loved.

Its been a while since I played Vanguard, but I remember the dungeons were either total hit-or-miss. Some were quite large and well designed, others were junk.

Sebilis is one of my favorites too.

Everquest 2 had probably the best dungeons of any MMO I ever played though. See Solusek's Eye for evidence.

Kaesora was always good fun and had a start-to-finish feel that a good dungeon run should. The one way layout made sure you were entering with the intention of working your way to an exit.

I enjoyed KC as well, as a zone, but it's more of a place to go grind xp in a certain area, rather than a place to dungeon crawl.

Sol a: lava you got stuck in, traps that hurt/blocked you, intensely tight corners and rooms and learning every single mob location was key to survival. Plus you can kill gnomes.Guk and seb were great too, and kael was fun cuz it was a city of giants meant to be raided. I think they got a bit lazy with the zone design in pop, though the flagging complexity made up for it. The giant robot that hit for 100k but that you could zone into with the right quest in sof gets a point for originality. Also, fritzl's basement.

I feel classic EQ2 dungeons were phenomenally done. I feel there was a good blend of instancing/open dungeon feel in that "parts" of dungeons were instanced.

I really enjoyed Sol Eye in EQ2....the trip to nagafen is insanely long, insanely dangerous, and felt epic.

I managed one time to sneak with my swashbuckler all the way down to naggy.....had to avoid a few see invis mobs along the way....was indeed awesome.

I've been spending a lot of time in the Guks and I really like the way they're laid out (particularly Upper Guk). At first everything just seemed so haphazard and frustratingly confusing, but now that I've learned it backwards and forwards, I love how everything ties together.

SolA is also great.

I also agree that EQ2 dungeons are very well-designed, particularly the lowbie ones like Fallen Gate and Varsoon.

For Everquest, Sebilis for sure. Amazing.

WoW, I always had respect for the design difference paths Mauradon had. I liked the big waterfall and different themes.

Dargun's Tomb in Vanguard was simply fantastic. Lore, quests, and design were all very nice.

But nothing comes close to EQ dungeon design. Seb, KC, Droga, Nurga, Keasora. I mean I could go on and on and on. Velknors Lab, hah. Each design was original had hidden places, interesting concepts. Incorporated water, pits, ladders and traps. No other game even comes close.

Howling stones, velks, or chardok. Siren's Grotto was pretty cool too if you were strong enough to handle it.

In that case... Never been. I started getting sick of EQ around when Kunark was released. Only went to Sebilis somewhat. Never that far though.

It was always amazing. You're like OMG HOW LONG UNTIL THE ALBS ROLL IN.

Much better though was rolling on down to do Legion, finding him 3/4 dead, making 8000 RP, grabbing the kill and watching the ensuing forum whines.

I loved Highhold Keep, just the atmosphere nothing special about drops or anything just great memories. I thought Temple of Veeshan was just crazy, the whole idea of the one great temple of the game.

As far as you guys saying you liked Blackwing Lair in WoW, did you guys raid that place when it was first out? I'm talking the first few weeks. The release of that zone was terrible. The dungeon itself was an interesting idea, but the boss fights were extremely buggy and had to be touched up many times.

Fallen Gate was a ton of fun, BRD in wow was also very cool.

ToFS is so fun. Kael, Velks.. Velious is great ;) Spent tons of time in Karnor's back in the day and loved the fact that a train could come at any second.

In WoW.. I really liked Shadowfang Keep for sure, but as someone already said, most dungeons really felt like loot pinatas.

Edit:

Forgot about The Hole. Definately one of my favorites.

Hell, most of the dungeons through to Velious were kinda all my favorites. Nothing will ever touch Sol A. I spent so much time, learned it inside and out, made so much money and like, even all the days played I spent in there, it seemed like I was always finding new stuff. It had it all: lava traps, different factions, merchants, false walls, even an unimplemented zone line!

Just the attention to detail and the way the zones all tied together was amazing. I loved being able to swim through the lava to get from area to area in Sol B. I loved the little underwater tunnels in City of Mist that nobody seemed to know about. There was just so much depth and so much interesting stuff in all the dungeons back then, even if there were entire swaths of places that were nearly worthless from a drops or quest standpoint. Game Design = C-, Layout and Atmosphere = A+++

I definitely had a love/hate with Karnor's. And I bet I will again when we get to Kunark :)

Ah, so I'm not crazy! Are you referring to that one hall by the lava pit where you turn the corner and it just skips you back a few feet? I didn't know if it was a zoneline or a level-restricted area or what....

Well unimplemented zone line is the only way I could describe it... it was a dead-end tunnel that scooted you back like that. There were a few others in game throughout the years: definitely one in Kurn's Tower. Can't recall any others off the top of my head. But yeah that definitely existed. And confused the hell out of me.

That zoneline wasn't actually used to get into solc. When solc launched, sola still had that fake zoneline.

It was rather confusing, as many people that either already knew it or found it while looking for solc were petitioning that the entrance (they assumed) wasn't working.

1. City of Mist. Too awesome. Especially from a shamans point of view since you spent forever there for epic, and uncovered much of the lore of the city. First trip through the highway in the sky, then inevitably running into some trap floor from up there and taking the biggest fall since Overthere canyon for 32k.

2. Crystal Caves. Loved the feel of the zone; the long dip down, fighting your way through hordes of orcs, the village of dorfs down halfway of the zone, the spiders and the awesome plat-source that was the golem camp... Just loved that place. I recall some awesome music playing at alot of spots there, too.

3. Charasis. The place was just too cool, and it was the first zone I got a key to enter in, felt like I was a part of some super-exclusive club or something. Somehow got a key to sebilis too, but forgot how the hell that happened. I think some guy just dragged me to TT and told me to wait somewhere, then pulled both hunter/forager and told me to loot the necks, then ran me to do the turn-in. I don't even remember asking or anything, he just kinda did this. Then I was confused as heck and never really entered sebilis. =p
