View Full Version : New Player: Question about spell descriptions?

Hi all!
I just started playing a couple of days ago and I have a silly question, is it hard to put descriptions of what the spell does in the popup window? I seem to remember everquest had that feature, but that might be in later expansions. But since the interface is new, isn't it possible to add the spell description? I just find it unnecessarily frustrating to have to go online to find out what a spell does and if I should buy it.
P.S. Love the server. My wife and I are playing Mage + Necro duo. It's awesome!
Thanks!

classic "feature" you will have to suffer with us ;)

Hmmm seems kind of silly not to take advantage of. I mean, I'm all for immersion and not having map and compass, but not being able to find out what a spell is before purchasing? That's just mean :)

As you surmise, you'll have to do what the rest of us do: Use the Project1999 wiki or some other source for classic EQ spell info. I agree it's a bit of a nuisance, but that's how it was back then, so that's how it is on here now. Be sure you use a resource with era-appropriate information. Modern sources won't list the same data due to tweaks to spells over the years.
The interface is only new because the admins haven't yet found a means of forcing the old-style UI.

Frustrating? Yes. But back in the day you'd buy a spell and experiement with it to find out what it did :) Added to the immersion.

I would have to disagree. The point is a bit moot, there could be a happy medium seeing how no one really experiments to find out what the spell does, they go on the Wiki and find out before buying it. Back in the day there was no wiki so you had to experiment.
I guess the only real reason for keeping this "frustrating" feature in place is to remind people of how frustrating it was back in the day :) Which is fine of course, considering what this whole server is about. Going down the nostalgia lane. And as an added bonus, every time someone goes to the project1999 wiki it adds those views and clicks that make the site ever more popular for search engines.
But thanks for your reply, I didn't really consider the "experiment" argument before. Although I don't agree with it, it gave me something to consider.
Cheers!

This is actually one of the reasons I don't quite agree with the whole make a necro to make bank idea. At level 34 I believe spells are 20pp each. That one set of spells alone cost more than my monk had in equipment at level 34. The cost of spells is pretty crazy. Especially when even with complete databases descriptions are wrong, you get issues like the wiki articles giving the wrong numbers for dots. After playing a shaman, necro, and monk, the monk has been the easiest to make money on. Obviously this doesn't apply at post 50 farming levels.

Could it be perhaps that no one volunteered to update the spell database and descriptions in the game?
I'm new so I don't know how this project is run, is there perhaps a lack of manpower to do these things?

I play every class on here. I have not seen hardly any spell descriptions that are wrong on Wiki.

Can't answer that as I just started playing. Still would like to know why no spell descriptions though.

When I first started playing EQ..in 2000, I had EQ paraphernalia printed out all over my house. lol Since I started playing P99 again, I was reminded of why I did that.

Wow was there really spell sets? I don't mind literally anything else 'classic', but I would kill to be able to swap spell sets. As a chanter I have so many different 'modes' that I'm in I end up in my spellbook for a singular spell way too much.

Should probably just be happy you dont have to stare at a spellbook to meditate till 35 (not sure when they took this out of live)

Reminds me of my Wizard back in the day, and when I first got O'Keil's Radiation. "wtf this spell isn't doing any damage to mobs"
I think the original designers had a dream where you would just ask people around you for help on where everything was and what it did. I can't remember where I heard this, but the reasons that spells and fishing didn't work on boats was because you were supposed to "socialize with your fellow travellers!"
