i lurked a bit here before i finally installed the client (on my mac, got it up and running following the guide with no issues. crashing out sometimes on zone but im on wireless). wasn't sure how to reconcile playing 12 years later, how i'd find the time, what i'd do, etc.

after trying a few 'solo-able' classes on the regular server (druid and necro) i decided to follow my dreams and make a melee on PvP.

i never really played much PvP during release and I can already tell it's making it worth it to play a second time around.

despite all the racket you can find on the forums all the people ive run to in-game have been awesome. i think with the new XP boost there's a bunch of noobs around and everyone wants to keep in touch at the low levels. I found the blue server to be a little more impersonal.

i made some coin doing a transfer for someone. it was a bit of a different experience knowing that if i screwed them my character would be on a shitlist for the rest of its existence.

anyway, people there have been super helpful, the XP bonus is making the levels go pretty quick, and being back on has been fun even if just to see a few familiar NPC faces for the first time in years.

anyway, get your ass on and play. if you've ever considered PvP, now seems to be a good time to jump in.

Welcome to P1999. But we are not going over there trust me. There is a Reason there is 25 people on the server. You make 26. Grats.

This thread looks like a challenge to all the Twink griefers on Red. How long can this guy play before you bind camp him until he deletes EQ?

Haha, I enjoy the having to be alert to other people in my zone, so having no one isn't as fun.

You guys who only play blue really have no idea what red is like... you have to actually play before you judge : / only true thing is population is lower and more fickle. But if you play blue and enjoy the pve.. well you can do more of that, and faster, on red... If pop is so low you would never see anybody who would PvP you! why not roll on red with your crew? Also the community on red is actually stronger in a weird way

Longtime Rallos Zek vet here, from 1999-2004. I saw it all - from the days of being able to loot weapons/shields/ranged, to the days of an enchanter being able to charm you and type /pet get lost and you would slash yourself for 32k and take XP loss, to me personally taking vengeance upon the naked PKs (who risked nothing) by using my pet to XP loss them, to ultimately loot being removed.

I would never go back to an item loot EQ PVP server. Hell I don't know if I'd go back to EQ PVP.

For two reasons, mainly:

1) EQ PVP is hilariously imbalanced because it was never designed for PVP. Whether it was the naked ice comet Wizards of vanilla, the hilariously OP necros of Kunark that could solo 5 people at once by chain casting deflux and other unresistable (in pvp) spells, or how OP melee became from velious onwards.

2) EQ is not a game that supports item looting well. It is far too soul crushing to get jumped and lose some item that took a week to camp - it just drives people to quit. Games that support item looting are games like Eve, UO, Darkfall - these are games where items are craftable and replacable and unless you are stupid you never lose anything too valuable.

It also tremendously devalued droppable gear and increased the value of NO DROP gear.

And I say this with a lot of fond memories of RZ. But there was also a reason RZ was such a bluebie server where PKs became KOS by everyone and PVP was discouraged.

EQ PVP SO IMBALANCED

SOMETIMES A CERTAIN CLASS HAS AN ADVANTAGE OVER ANOTHER IN PVP

I CANNOT KILL ANYONE WITH MY CLERIC. BUT NEITHER CAN THEY KILL ME. ALSO I LOSE WHEN I GET BACKSTABBED BY A DUELIST ROGUE ON MY WIZ. BUT AM ABLE TO LEVITATE OVER THE ROGUE AND CAST ICE COMET ON HIM IF I FIND HIM UNPREPARED. THIS IS BULLSHIT

WHY ARE WE ALL TALKING IN CAPS? STOP BEING STUPID; YOU'RE SCARING AWAY POTENTIAL NEW PLAYERS. THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!

Yeah, PvP is pretty great. Having played blue here, I've decided that even with the low population red is a much better experience. We're allowed, like, freedoms, and stuff! I can be as nice or as mean as I want, and other players can react to that however they see fit. More opportunity to make a name for yourself is always a good thing, and on blue players are all expected to be nice, or at least somewhat neutral, because there's nothing else to do. Guess once you get leveled and geared you can start being mean by taking raid encounters, but it's just not the same.

I'm not a very competitive player, but Red99 is my e-home :)

first part of his post reminiscing about good ol days of RZ was great.. please, do go on with that.

but his post went down hill once he started bashing EQ PVP

Are you kidding?

In vanilla melee was worthless and CC spells never landed because of MR stacking. Druids dot was unresistable, many necro dots were unresistable and so was life tap - this is just vanilla era.

Then kunark came out and necros were god mode - splurt, boiling blood, deflux all unresistable in PVP. Enchanters got rapture I think, which was just lovely.

Melee remain garbage until velious and luclin at which point resists get so powerful that they have free reign of the anusi of everyone else.

I mean EQ was never balanced for PVP I don't understand how anyone could begin to argue that EQ PVP was good past level 35 and even then I have my doubts.

And bards were just lol

Here is a classic example of the red mentality. Remember, the whole point of EQ is PVE. They saw how UO was turning into a no-holds-barred brawl and their goal was to create a kind of massively multiplayer DND. Challenge was achieved by giving the NPCs much bigger numbers than the PCs, making all the good loot very timeconsuming to acquire, and by giving the playerbase as few hints as possible. Now, who says "I want to do all that PVE stuff AND still have to deal with gankers and PKs and all the UO PVP stuff" ? Someone who is very fucking serious about the game. Because if you are a casual player on a server like this you are the sheep.

So, when you combine a group of very hardcore players who all derive a great deal of satisfaction from winning at EQ with some ganks and a whole fuck ton of OOC trash talking and issues of the Red Faggot Gazette, and you get a server that is serious fucking business. Winning over there is a big deal; witness Stasis trying to sell his rogue after he lost in the first round of the BOTB. And, to quote Seinfeld, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!".

But now imagine you are one of those very hardcore red players who puts a lot of effort into winning on that server. And then you look over at blue, and you see that a) their population is 10x yours and b) they think your server is a shithole. This is like an assault on your core values. And thats why we see all these "come to red so I can shit on you you loser" posts.

Very entertaining.

However, this was my point. I've been off EQ since Luclin was released, and never played an emu. I played blue during that time. I came to P99 a week or two ago.

I played blue for a few days, and then played red for a few days.

I found the red players to be much more friendly and generous. There's low pop at the low levels on both servers, and the XP bonus on red makes that more bearable.

The XP bonus seems to have inspired a few people to move as well. People will run a long way to group up with you at a low level.

With no XP loss and no item loot, on red you need not fear the griefer.

Now, there's plenty more to say about red vs. blue, whether or not PvP is just anti-EQ, etc. But my point is, red is a good place for a new player at the moment.

We're not serious fucking business, at least not more than blue (no matter what some red players say). It's a video game, and though it's a pretty hard one with giants in newbie zones and such, that's all it is. We have our trash talk and murderous elves; you have your trash talk and meanie raid guilds.

It's the same game we're playing, and if you have a solid group of friends to play with, either server is gonna be tons of fun. I think the initial reason for red doing poorly was lack of adventurous bluebies, and now the low population is causing the low population. There's some meanie twinks killing new players, but there have always been griffons and Sergeant Slates doing that in EC anyway.

Very few bluebies took it seriously. They joined because it was new and exciting, but never intended to leave blue, and were gone from red after playing around there for a few months.

Red is a piece of cake today compared to the Fuck Fest it was when it first started. I even tried it again a few days ago, well I have tried it a lot of times since it started. Not much excitement with 30 people on in a PvP game. But it can be a lot of fun, and I can see why people play on it. But I have always liked to solo a lot and PvP is not very conducive to that. :(
