View Full Version : 'Fun Leveling' paths - EQ leveling for someone used to WoW

Hi all,
This thread is about my wife. We used to play WoW together in Vanilla->Wotlk, and we've dabbled in other MMOs - EQ2, GW2, Rift (shortly) and some other semi MMOs like D3.
Everquest, you might say, is my 'white whale' for gaming with her. After a lull in gaming she recently decided that she would give it a try. And good news! She is enjoying it!
Now comes where I ask for some help. I know the traditional leveling paths. If I was just leveling up an alt I'd be in Oasis til 20, then Unrest, then MM, solb, guk, into kunark, etc.
However, my wife gets bored of the same place. We went to oasis at 11 and now at 15 she is tired of killing crocodiles and orcs. I told her we'd find a new place to go tonight.
My question is - has anybody tried to do a leveling path with the most variety? I'm looking to only be somewhere for 1-2 levels at a time, and while I know the 'vague level' of most dungeons/zones, I'd like to gradually increase the difficulty/levels of the zones - for instance, I know @ 15 there are orcs/crocs, unrest yard/first floor, hhp orcs, but I'm not really sure where the correct place to 'start' versus the correct place to 'end' is. I'm also not opposed to 'revisiting' zones if there is a drastic change - I.e. uguk has a wide range of camps that are lower and 'higher' - etc.
Any pointers? Tips? I checked out the leveling guide on the wiki but it basically summarizes the vague knowledge I have. Really looking for people who have done this kind of thing, or even if you just know an awesome camp that's only applicable to a small level range - I'm game.
Thanks!
Tomtee/Scrumph (and my wife is Pizzatime)

Duos can do a lot of fun stuff that solos cant.
around mid-teens to 20s, LOIO is really fun xp, as is Upper Guk. SK Aviak treefort is always fun but tapers off around 20 iirc. SolA is always a good time, but youll need more people.
Kunark dungeons are where it's at if you can get a semi-regular group together in the 20s-30s and even beyond. Some of my favorite times in EQ were crawling mid-level Kunark dungeons with buddies.
I've always been a huge fan of CT, and can't believe it's a ghost town on this server.

Kerra Island. I had a blast PLing my chars there on live. Super exp. Easy kills. Always free :) Pretty sure I was there in my teens.

Have you been to CT here? It's a nightmare. Crazy pathing and mobs healing through walls. I think I tried to bring a group there once a few years ago and it ended fairly quickly to say the least

Pizzatime? :O
Yes, it was the name of her banker alt in WoW. We had an alt guild that Pizzatime was the leader of called.. you guessed it...
< Let's Kick Shell >
When she rolled her char here it was literally the only name that wasn't taken that she usually plays under.

The Paw is one of my favorite zones. Good xp mod, mobs aren't too tough, whip drops are good cash to pet classes. I spent a ton of time there and different parts of the zone are good all the way from 25ish with a partner to 40s. Lake Rathe aviaks can be done high teens/early 20s.

It's so bad here, at least in the early days people would do CT for rubicite now its barren and probably a good thing most ravenscale armor is crap or rogues would be screwed.
One of my favorite zones ever, I went from 22-36 in CT on live didn't go anywhere else.

That sounds like it was on live to me. I haven't been there yet, so I don't know what you mean about "crazy pathing," but there was always healing through walls.

As in a mob that is 15 feet in front of me running the complete opposite direction when pulled, going into rooms and bringing all his friends. These mechanics could be classic, but it's a pita without proper CC

I'd add for 52-55 you can duo/trio in Permafrost in the bear caves.

Yeah, Tag lizard he runs about halfway between you and him towards you suddenly does a complete 180 and just takes off. must be some anti lizard force fields we just cant see and were making them go all the way around to get us!
I do remember healing through walls, but i also don't remember it being THIS bad. Also that caster mobs have access to spells they should, or at least back then see lguk frogs ice cometing, gives them access to stronger heals, and the range seems longer but thats probably just in my head.

The thing everyone seems to have issues with is the throne room which on live was a very difficult camp due to the zealots hitting super hard and mobs all being healer types.
I remember that zone being one of the places where a ranger/druid was key for pulling because they could harmony everything.
That said, i went there when i was low level and it was a horrible experience. Our group was a horrible comp though, no enchanter or bard, i was only healer. Something like necro, sk, rogue, war, cleric, monk.
If you went with a balanced group it probably wouldn't be horrible.

So EXACTLY like live. :)

Not quite exactly; we have only 1/4 to 1/3 of the population that most Live servers had plus a smaller proportion of new players. Consequently there's no "overflow" to populate the second- and third-tier zones. Hence zones like Cazic and Permafrost go largely un-used. Lack of people is probably the largest impediment to doing these zones on P1999.

No, I meant the horrible, horrible pathing and healing through walls :) It's why I tried CT a few times on live and eventually gave up. Couldn't get a group cohesive enough to handle it.

My first gripe since starting Project 1999 last week is that we don't have the original Paw. You know the one that maybe 50 people visited ever who were actually low enough level. Well I went there any chance I got just because BB was usually overcrowded and Paw had so many of those snakes that dropped the high value snake fangs. It was probably for the best that they changed it, but I still miss it.
