I'm 7 blues through it so far and it's taken me 3 hours of grinding in HHK to get there. I see another 8 hours minimum to make it to 31.
So 30, 35, 40, and 45 are all hell levels? So I have to get through 4 hell levels to make it into the Planes?
Wait until 51, 54, and 59

Sounds about right. My first character on this server was leveling about 4 hrs of grind per level around that level. Hell levels take about twice as long.
If you haven't noticed already. Soloing/Duoing is much faster exp than grouping.

Do you know a place where Paladins can solo well and efficiently (as in kill quickly, little downtime)? Not going back to Unrest for Hags either. I was planning to Trio in LGuk at 33.

I always thought the hell levels from live in the 50's were 51 and 55...but after having just soloed my way to nearly 54, levels 51 52 and 53 all take the exact same amount of experience doing the same rotation (give or take 15 mins). I'm not sure if I'm just remembering wrong or what..guess I'll see when I hit 55.

Leveling fast is all about the right group in the right zone. I found exp was very good in frontier mountains but a friend was tearing it up in mistmoore castle groups while I was in FM and was leveling just as fast.
I personally had a bad experience in HHK but I remember leveling there on live just fine.

This is why people told you to be sure you were playing the class you enjoyed, Bean! Leveling to 46 (let alone 60) is a long row to ho, especially if you are playing something that you don't enjoy playing regardless of your xp rate.
That said, untwinked pally has it especially rough imo. Xp penalty, basically no solo potential, a lack of excellent duo options (I mean, a caster can duo with twinked melee or other casters and get crazy xp, or a twinked melee can find a supporting caster and go to town, etc. But an untwinked tank pretty much needs an ideal trio to blaze up the xp; smaller groups will lack damage to smoke through xp mobs and larger groups tend to have dead weight and/or not enough mobs to pull). You'll get there, you just better focus on having fun with the ride because the destination is a long ways away.

Ahh, gotcha. Not sure why I was thinking you were untwinked.
Short of a paladin with a fungi though, my comments hold true. You aren't going to be soloing like crazy because you'll have too much downtime, you aren't going to be duoing like crazy because you'll either have downtime (if you duo with a DPS) or you'll kill slowly (if you duo with a healer). So you need a trio for ideal xp, imo. Healer + you + a DPS (ideally like an epic rogue or a chanter who is charming, something along those lines) would be about the best.
Not that you can't get leveled up and into the planes in full groups or with oddball duos or whatever, just won't be as speedy!

I pretty much solo'd my paladin 20-30 in Unrest
30-35 Lguk dead side zone in
35-45 Lguk area where exe cav sage savant spawn
With Ghoulbane u can solo but it requires skill luck and patience. Your gonna have to lull a shit ton, ivu alot and med alot but blue con undeads should not b a problem esp with shield bash, stun n root. Was it fast? Nope. But what it was constant exp that you can go out n take for yourself. Usually a cleric is nearby for reses n if can nab clarity n haste time to time look out ull b undead killing machine. Pulling mobs to safe hall or the little area just outside of executioner is what i did. Just say a small prayer before you lob a lull into exe room might have to root loh n camp if things go bad. Also get a WC cap!!!

My Paly can still solo at 51. Certain gear helps though. In any case it would be a good idea to make use of how well a Paly can snap agro, Paly + Rogue combo is pretty good xp (toss in a healer if you need it).
Hell levels are harsh, no getting around it. I felt like 40 was the worst. Pretty tough to find a good spot and nothing to look forward to on ding except worrying about the big xp you will lose even with rez if you die in 41.
Fortunately when you get to 51 you can die a lot and barely even notice it if you get rezzed.

unless its the live side mino patty
You want to use lguk for its undead mobs n your ghoulbane the loot will come but most of the good stuff is farmed by 50+ solo
Sage gonna b your best bet but i wouldnt worry about getting named in guk til your closer to 40.... just stick to zone in mobs n on ocasion the bedroom if ur in a group but b careful of ice bones they wreck u

The real trick to the mid levels is to find a group of people who play when you do.
I got lucky and literally did the same group of people every day from 28-35.. I would log on and instantly get invited, same group, same place.
Anyone who has a solid group they can group with will level faster than others who don't just because you dont have to waste time lfg and dealing with players you dont mesh with.

Ignore the ghoulbane hype too, imo. I don't have solid numbers, but I have a very hard time believing that 1-ish procs per minute from that thing is going to serve you better than just using a real weapon like a baton of faith (or a granite face grinder if you've got some more cash).

Tecmos lvl up a paladin before you chime in about what you believe or not
GB procs at lvl 20 the damage is 182 !!!! it can save your ass countless times if u get lucky n proc 2-3 times in a fight. 182 damage proc is broken when leveling 20-40 and its 1 handed so you can still bash. 2handers damage cap is too low for these levels to match GB, maybe 40 plus it starts to lose its godlyness but dont knock it til you try it

In his other thread he was still level 20 yet had over half of his epic already MQ'd, and was begging to pay other people to MQ the other 1/2 for him.

no sir -- the 150pp baton of faith likely murders the ghoulbane by 33 much less the granite face grinder. I wish I could provide numbers but I didn't log everything back when I first started here lol -- but as pointed out by both Tecmos and Flyboy there really is no comparison between the two for dps as a pally. The only question is exactly when the ghoulbane (which procs at 20) falls below the BoF in output. My guess is very quickly!
My first character here was a crappily geared paladin who was wearing bronze until he started replacing it with planar. I had managed to save up enough for a ghoulbane by making a blue for red platinum trade for a few hundred red plat (netting me about 800pp I felt rich!!!) and got the ghoulbane at 20. I will say the ghoulbane at that level was ridiculous, but based on advice I had gotten on these boards I thought it would be a solid weapon for a long time. Then one night (I think high 20's maybe very low 30s) I was in a group with another paladin who had a baton of faith and he was murdering me in DPS with my ghoulbane, vs undead lol. Next day with a trip to EC and 200ppish from selling unrest bronze drops I had my baton of faith and never looked back. Ended up giving the ghoulbane away to a guildie for his epic turn in lol (Yur welcome Onshuu :P)
As to the OP -- one, buy a baton of faith, or a GFG if u have the money. Two -- stop using that soulfire its literally garbage as a weapon beyond the charges of CH. You use soulfire to play dress-up in ec not hit things with. Three, one fairly good duo you can do is with an enchanter. With my totally untwinked pally I managed to do a good portion of lvls 30-52 duoing with a friend who was an enchanter for pretty fast exp. It was a fun combo, could do some neat things -- probably slows the enchanter down vs duoing with like a shaman or cleric but still pretty solid. Once you hit 45 and you can helmetheal all sorts of fun things open themselves up. I will say the key to this duo is the chanter charming something that can backstab. Pre 50 anytime the chanter can manage that things will just melt under the chanter's pets while you keep the mob turned properly and the chanter alive, lol.
Hope this is of assistance.
Looks like a good amount of time spent hunting Froglok Crusaders.

Well I think we are talking about several different things, I dont want to derail this thread anymore about the GB vs Face Grinder vs Baton
( btw sorry Tec ur right its 142 not 182 my bad there, ur right as usual)
anyway my point was if he is SOLOING the Ghoulbane proc bursts will sometimes make or break a fight when in Lguk. Obv if you are not fighting undead Ghoulbane is worthless compared to the other two, but he was mentioning lguk constantly so I figured thats where he would be ( and paladins DO shine there solo, not efficient or fast but we can get it done there compared to other melees )
Also how hard can a lvl 30 even hit with 2handers, isnt there a damage cap or does it get totally removed at 30?
TLDR yes Face Grinder and Baton prob parse better but if you are soloing the parse is only half the story and sometimes some well timed procs will basically win you the fight.
Tecmos Deception
06-10-2013, 08:04 PM
Damage caps are all kinda soft caps. 1-9 the cap is 18 but you will hit harder than that thanks to strength and skills. 10-19 the cap is 28, but again you can hit for mid-40s or even harder if you have high str (not to mention attack buffs!). You hit for 60+ regularly once you ding 20 but continue to see large gains in your maximum hit with each level up until 30, when I believe the cap is gone entirely. My ranger started using his woodsman's staff (31/35) as soon as he hit 20 and was hitting for 60 nonstop, but also frequently would be getting 70-80 hits; now at 27, 60 is still the number I see the most often, but my max hit is up over 100.
And yeah, no one will argue with you that a lucky streak of procs is a great thing. But relying on luck to survive a tough fight is... yeah... that's a bad way to grind out the long road to 60. That's why I was so adamant about GFG (or even baton) being superior to GB, even at 20 when GB is at its peak.

Yeah, with a Ghoulbane. They proc like 10 times or more a fight. Killer weapon to depend on. Best weapon in the game hands down.
A weapon does not proc many more times in a fight if you have 1,000 dex. It is like a 1.2 x for 100 extra dex thingy. It just WILL proc if you have more Dex. Some weapons do seem to proc more than others. The Ghoulbane ain't one of them.

Ghoulbane has always been slightly over rated imo. The damage delay is pretty bad compared to a lot of other weapons and its proc rate is not exceptional. I will give that my Dex was pretty crappy and that there are times when you will see a string of procs and feel awesome. However, the window of it starting to proc to where its damage/delay is severely out paced is not very large.

GB is pretty great pre-kunark, but the price on Sword of the Morning plummets so fast with a low pally population and therefore no demand on the market that it's better to just get one of those.
