I'll watch the first episode tonight. Been busy reading, but it's done downloading. 11 episodes in total, right?

Ya.
The entire show is character development/buildup.

It's the only show that made me feel sad in a good way. That's the only way I can describe it.

Fruits Basket didn't make you feel that way? Almost every episode of that show made me cry happy tears.

Never watched. I hardly watched shoujo back then, now it's about half of what I watch.

I don't know what shoujo is, but you really really must watch Fruits Basket.

Shojo/Shoujo
The term shojo is used to describe manga marketed to females up to the age 18. These series tend to focus on romance from a young female protagonist's point of view. Emotions and social interaction play a big part in shojo manga. Shojo manga tries to mirror the lives of their readers. Viz Comics and TOKYOPOP have released English translations of some good shojo manga, including Moto Hagio's They Were Eleven, Shio Sato's Changeling and Nami Akimoto's Miracle Girls.

Lol, now I feel childish :(
Kagatob
06-26-2013, 02:37 AM
I mostly watch Shoujo-Seinen and Comedy-Seinen which is a vague demographic, I tend to find the shows to be much deeper and provocative then the mainstream crap (Naruto/Bleach/Onepiece) out there.

I've never seen it but I'm assuming it's Shoujo, it has that feel reading the synopsis. It could be Seinen or Shoujo-Seinen.

By "Good god-fearing American" society's standards pretty weird.
By liberal society's standards I'm between on the level to pretty tame (no body mods or anything like that).
By "the internet"'s standards I'm a normalfag.
As far as the creepy part, meh, I get more eye-rolls for my silly antics than I get people actually afraid of me. For example, people ask me to babysit their kids all the time, though being as bad as I know I am with dealing with kids I politely decline.
The most un-normal thing I do is cosplay when I go to conventions which isn't even unique to the anime fanbase Example see: Comicon.

Not really. I was expecting it to get shit on anyway. I just wanted to save the mods the work of moving the thread. It's called a sensible action.

I do like mindfuks from time to time, couldn't get into the characters in Monster though, just didn't do it for me.
Hailto
06-27-2013, 03:57 AM
Recommend something similar to Monster since you're the anime master?
Kagatob
06-27-2013, 04:05 AM
It's not really similar to monster as it's a vastly different setting, but Higurashi is generally considered the best mindfuk anime (First 24 episodes have terrible animation, the second set is much better animated). Bakemonogatari is good too but it's extremely 'artistic' in style and I've found it's very hit or miss with people.
Hailto
06-27-2013, 04:08 AM
Hmm, i googled Higurashi, i don't think i would like it just based on the art style. Part of the reason i like monster is because its more of a "realistic" art style, for lack of a better word.
Kagatob
06-27-2013, 04:47 AM
I'm not trashing Monster, just wasn't my cup of tea. Higurashi is about a bunch of teenagers so there's that trope.
If you want the more 'realistic' I'd suggest Paranoia Agent. It's another one that wasn't my bag but I know a bunch of fans of the show.
True 'mindfuk' animes are hard to come by so the pool to choose from is pretty small to begin with. Usually you end up with animes that are another genre and happen to be kinda mindfuckey.

This is a very tame scene but is the general idea of the kind of things you'll see in Higurashi, if it doesn't elicit some type of response then the show probably isn't for you. ;)
Hailto
06-27-2013, 05:23 AM
Yeah, Paranoia Agent type art style is what i prefer, unfortunately i think theres only a handful of shows like that.

06-27-2013, 05:27 AM
So instead of playing EQ, I watched the remaining episodes.
There might be some spoilers, so don't read more of this post!
The ending made me cry, of course. After they had all made the conscious decision to grow up a little, and apologize to Menma for their selfish feelings, it got much better. But the entire time when they were quarreling over who liked who and how their dating lives were going to unfold once she made the return to Heaven, I kinda felt like it was just too much. It was worth watching, mostly for the ending, but it doesn't even come close to being as good as the shows I'd told you about. When you're dealing with heavy subject matter like the death of a child/parent, a spirit on a mission before going to Heaven, and people crazy with grief... jr. high drama somehow feels out of place.
But maybe that's how people that age (14?? I'm never very clear on this with anime) would have handled it; I don't know. I was reminded of my dead friends, and the feelings didn't match up right.
I loved that she became the flowers.

They're making a prequel movie releasing in August.
Faerie

Somehow I imagine that being much better, heh. There was plenty still left unexplained about their past together.
Kagatob
06-27-2013, 05:51 AM
I'm looking forward to it, my only gripe is that I liked the characters as teenagers and would have loved to see a what if Memma never died scenario, that's just me wanting my cake and wanting to eat it too though. :p
I actually didn't mind them as kids and kid characters usually annoy me so I'm sure it'll still be great. I just hope the movie ends on a high note and not with Memma's death, that'll bum me out for sure. :(
Faerie
06-27-2013, 05:54 AM
Now you should watch Fruits Basket!

About 4 months behind on shows at the moment. 48 episodes worth of shows from the winter seasons I have downloaded are left after dropping a crappy show I started.
Once finished with that I want to start on the spring season which is almost finished and I don't even know how many of those series I'll like as I haven't looked at the list yet.
Once I decide to get a smartphone or a tablet of my own I'll be able to find a way to watch those shows at work and then I'll be caught up in no time. :)
Faerie
06-27-2013, 06:03 AM
You're crazy, that must be tons of anime :O
Are you on break from EQ right now or something? I don't think I could watch that much TV and still have time or energy for EQ. Of course, blue server practically plays itself, right? :P
Kagatob
06-27-2013, 06:10 AM
I took a break from P99 starting about a month and a half ago and haven't really started back up since. I'd actually watch more anime while playing solo on my necro, besides the show I dropped on episode 3 I think I've only watched one or two 12 ep shows in the past month.
When I'm not working or sleeping I've picked up playing Morrowind again (about 1/3 the way through bloodmoon). 4 days out of the week my girlfriend is visiting and I rather spend time with her. We used to duo a bard/druid but she burnt out of that fast so we do other things for the time being.
Kagatob
06-27-2013, 06:15 AM
Once you get caught up on shows and figure out which ones you are actually going to watch it amounts to only one or two episode a day to keep up anyway.
Faerie
06-27-2013, 06:17 AM
Damn RL, getting in the way of TV shows! :)
I dunno how you can watch anime while playing a necro; reading subtitles and playing at the same time must take a lot of practice lol.
If you and your gf make the return, maybe you could try pvp (I know, I know :()!
