View Full Version : 5 most hated games of all time.

the top5 thread got me thinking, list 5 of your most hated games you must have at least attempted to play it and preferably not poorly designed games/games that were pushed for release.
FF8 - played it for 20 minutes even though savarin raves about the story the gameplay was awful.
Tetris
Home alone
Mortal Kombat - loved being pushed into a corner and having people do the same move over and over not allowing you to even stand up
Legend of Legaia 2 - huge disapointment after playing the first one

1: Fable.
First game I had ever returned in a long history of gaming. The glitch in the first dungeon that lets you hit max level that was glaringly obvious would be enough to get it on this list but it tops off because the "choose your destiny" amounted to picking cliched 'good' or 'evil' quests at the goddamn guildhall. Magic was also completely useless and the dialog was terrible.
This is the game that was advertised "If you liked Morrowind you'll love this"... I beat Fable in 6 hours. Fuck you.
2: Anything by Square Enix after 1998.
Final Fantasy 8 was almost bearable if not for the fact that you had to play the game through this ass backwards number of hidden hoops in order to complete ANY of the special content. You needed to get lucky with mug on two specific one-time encounters to get one of the parts of the main character's ultimate weapon.
If that wasn't bad enough, right after that Square sold out to Disney with their shitty Kingdom Hearts franchise. The only thing worse then KH itself is the goddamn spergy fanbase. The rest of Square's legacy doesn't even need to be touched upon, I'll just mention Yuna Croft in passing...
3: Star Wars Battlefront.
The game was amazing on paper and pretty to look at in the commercial, then you realize it was only cut-scenes they were showing on the ads. The game in actuality was a big disappointment with too few environments and controls that made a fresh-release Skyrim look good.
4: Resident Evil Zero.
After the success of the amazing remake of the first Resident Evil game on the Gamecube they came up with this crap. It's not as much as the game was outright terrible but more about how bad it was after Capcom did so damn well not long before it. There are only so many ways to ruin an origin/prequel story (Prometheus anyone?) and they found a way.
5: Diablo 3.
Goes unsaid.

I may or may not have gone on record as saying Diablo is the worst game ever made. Infinite clicking, minimal rewards, one of the first major terrible online communities. It spawned a legion of "me too" crappy clones that still manage to be popular to this day despite the fact that they're all the same, boring, ugly, monotonous game. It ruined action RPG's which prior to Diablo were among my favorite genre. Games like Secret of Mana and the Soul Blazer series have a special place in my heart. Diablo turned the genre into mindless hack and slash and it has yet to recover. It ruined action RPGs the same way WoW ruined MMOs and Blizzard might be my most hated developer in all of video games. The only reason Starcraft doesn't make my wall of shame is because outside a few very select games I don't have any affinity for the RTS genre.

Reisz. There's an erudite SK somewhere out there on P99 that I named after her, got sick of and sold months ago lol.
Trying to stick to games at least played extensively/beat, so wont just be "played crappy NES game 5mins got angry at how crap it was and hate it ever since".
1. Lets say just about any early 3d platformer in the n64/psx. Croc, Banjo-Kazooie, Mario64, Medievil, et cetera. Alot of these your main opponent was bad camera that would spin around you at places while trying to do precise jumping and you had no idea if you were going to land on that stupidly narrow ice bridge at Cool Cool Mountain. Smashed me psx controller in half playing Croc2 when some obnoxious ant would be running his mouth at me while I was failing impossible pixel-perfect jumps with scarce checkpoints in some stupidly long instant-death-if-you-cant-do-this-jump-stage where the spastic camera would dictate which way was forward and which wasnt.
2. DotA Allstars on WC3!
Lots of goofy background on this, played RoC version, recall stuff like guy who made the TFT version snatching the original without permission to edit and whatnot, so it was all a bunch of tinyass community hate between non-expansion version and the expansion version. Was on RoC side so hated the TFT abomination obv!
3. Everquest
Love hate relationship! Gets you pissed ever so often, one reason or another.
4. Final Fantasy 7
Good at it's time, what it left behind is insidious fanbase and crappy advent children movies and whatnot.
5. Megaman 3
Worst thing coming off 1 and 2. Weapons suck, bosses can barely be beat with the regular pellets, running into bosses does more damage than the projectiles they shoot, recycled levels, recycled bosses from last game, haphazard plot about giant robot that gets thrown in at last stage at random. Music was great. Much everything else not.

#1) Echo the Dolphin. What is even going on in this game?
#2) Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, buggy + doesn't live up to Sonic's gameplay style.
#3) 'WarZ/Infestation Survivor Stories' - A ripoff of an excellent third party mod made for profit and capitalization. The developers being scumbags doesn't help.
#4) Runes of Magic. Pay to win garbage. I know people that are unhappy that have spent $800 on this game
#5) Superman 64. Need I say more?
Honorable mention:
#6) All Points Bulletin, the only game to be converted to free to play after completely being shut down, and is on the verge of causing a free to play games company to become bankrupt.

No clue how people could say FF7... best game of all time by far IMO. Hell, the Golden Saucer mini-games alone were better than most games to this day (battle arena 4tw).
Anyway:
1. EQ - Shadows of Luclin - the Bazaar killed one of my favorite parts of EQ, the EC tunnel. Fuck SoL, and fuck Sony for killing VI and the team who made EQ great.
2. InFamous - FUCK this game. FUCK IT UP IT'S STUPID ASS. I'm so goddamn sick of hearing how great it was. It was a shitty GTA clone where you shot nothing but shitty lightning at guys wearing trash bags for 20 fucking hours while doing terrible fetch quests in the ugliest fucking city I have ever seen. I got almost to the end and couldn't beat it because I hated it so much.
3. Diablo 3 - Took the incredible Diablo 2, fucked it up completely, then turned it into a cash farm. Fuck you, Blizzard.
4. Final Fantasy 8 - this is a special case. I think I really liked it until I got back from the space station (when the demons all show up) and crashed into the temple/castle thing, and then I couldn't beat those fucking Turks wannabes you fight at the entrance. I couldn't grind anywhere to level up, couldn't go anywhere, just bang my head against those unbeatable fucks because I was so dumb I forgot to make a save way before the end of the space sequence. Fuck me, right?
5. Final Fantasy 13 - Hey Square-Enix, take my childhood, turn it into a linear shithole with only one redeeming character (Lightning), and then make it 30+ hours to even get to the open world I love about FF. Fuck you, Square.
Honorable mentions:
Every Star Wars game since KOTOR.
WoW past vanilla (fuck TBC)
Megaman - I suck at that game. All of them. I don't care how amazing they might be. I suck at Megaman.
Edit: The League of Legends thread made me remember - fuck this game. I don't see the point. What is the big deal? It's like an RPG that you lose your character in every time the game ends. What the literal fuck?

i like idea of 9 but i thought the story was lacking. black mage dude was cool tho
FF8 was way too different when it came to the plot and feel of the game, but absolutely loved how hard you could break the battle system in that game. Most FF games you just had to grind exp endlessly, but FF8 you just spent some hour early on playing a lousy card minigame and you'd end up oneshotting everything in the game for the first 2 discs.

I tried to play thru 9 again when it came out on PSN and it didn't really age that well. I liked the story and all that wackadoo nonsense characters and stuff but it's so damn slooooooow. Like 30 seconds startup animation to every fight, slow ass battle timers and then another half minute for everybody to twirl their weapons around and divvy up the loot.
I want a FF9 remake with FF12 battle system. That'd be my fav JRPG ever.

Some of my favourites among your most hated!
Anyway,
5. Lord of the Rings Online
Horrible attempt at a WoW clone, yeah it wasn't the same as WoW but if you're going to take THE fantasy franchise and attempt to make it a successful MMORPG it needed to be more innovative and more fun than it was.
4. Street Fighter: The Movie
Take the defining 2D beat-em-up, add "real people", lol hard.
3. FFX-2
Sounds like a lot of people were pissed off with Square by FFX but I enjoyed the storyline, the blitzball, etc etc. Cue that terrible spinoff featuring just the female characters, add a lesbian, lol hard.
2. Zelda 2 - The Adventures of Link
Well Nintendo knew they screwed up I think by the top-down view returning properly to Gameboy/SNES sequels. Trying to merge a top-down adventure with a platformer was risky, probably not worth messing with the Zelda franchise over. Not much of a fan of the N64 Zelda games either :p
1. EverQuest 2
Anything that destroys the basis of good vs evil is a massive thumbs down (WoW wasn't far behind EQ2). To log in, see that I can play an ogre wizard, or a dark elf paladin. The whole all races/all classes idea was a huge screw up for me, and I think it changed but there was a group XP loss if someone in the group died. I loved it but I hated it, but the bottom line was if you wiped the XP loss was horrible. Also they blew up the moon, I loved Luclin :(

I reserve my hate for the games that truly deserve it.
Custer's Revenge (Atari 2600) - I'm glad I was a kid (and too young for this) back then. Naked Custer captures naked Native American maiden with 44DDDs? Uh, okay. And c'mon... we're talking 2600 graphics. Even if it wasn't so offensively vile, there's zero titillation.
ET (Atari 2600) - I really think Spielberg was purposely behind Atari's subsequent collapse because of this stinking game. No, not really. But he should have been.
Uncanny X-Men (NES) - I'm a huge X-Men fan, but this just sucked. And why is Marvel's Spider-Man villain, Boomerang, one of the bosses in this?
Back to the Future (NES) - Not surprisingly, made by the same people as Uncanny X-Men (LJN).
Superman: The New Adventures (N64)

Wow, this took a lot more thought than I thought it would initially.
1) Any Guitar Hero\Rockband\glorified DanceDance Revolution clone. Save for Rocksmith, gotta respect them for using an actual instrument. I even hate it when other games use the DDR model for mini-games. I will never get 100% complete on GTA:SA because I fucking refuse to do the dancing missions. Fuck 'em.
2) Silent Hill - just fucking awful imo.
3) Ghosts N Goblins - for the exact reasons that everyone else hates that god-forsaken game.
4) Paperboy - one of the worst concepts for a game ever. And somehow IT GOT A FUCKING SEQUEL???? Who in the hell ever played the first one?
5) Astro-Boy (Wii) - bought that shit for my son, and it makes him mad when I fall asleep playing it with him.

Sorry but the tread is called "most hated games" not worst games. I feel like if you can justify why you hate something it's not just taking potshots. Just listing terribly coded games without justifying your reason for hating them doesn't mean anything in this thread.
From my list the only game that could objectively be considered awful by the majority of people that play it, Pit Fighter, owns a special place among my most hated games because when I was a pre-teen and my mother used to rent video games for me, I sent her out to rent Street Fighter 2 and she came back with that. Not only was I fucking dismayed to not be playing Street Fighter 2 but I was playing god damned PIT FIGHTER. It was like telling me my dog died and then kicking me in the nuts.
The best part is like a year later when Mortal Kombat came out on the consoles, I sent my mother out to rent that for me and guess what game she came back with? Yep. This is the single most traumatic, video-game related event in my life. Even worse than the time I went to buy Scars of Velious after work, found out that Babbage's sold my reserved copy and I had to wait a week to get it.

Final Fantasy 8 was almost bearable if not for the fact that you had to play the game through this ass backwards number of hidden hoops in order to complete ANY of the special content. You needed to get lucky with mug on two specific one-time encounters to get one of the parts of the main character's ultimate weapon.
.
Um, did you even play Final Fantasy 8 or did you just have no idea at what you were doing?
All the items you need for Squalls weapon, Adamantine, Dragon Fang and Pulse Ammo can all be gathered before you are finished with disc one. And none of these come from 1 time encounters. Well, maybe a couple one time encounters also drop them, but you can get them easily enough from other sources. And Squalls weapon is the only one really with upgrading. I think Quistis had some benefit to, not 100%.
The real problem with FF8 was how easy it is to break the game with the card game. Of course you don't HAVE to play the CG, but the game basically shoves it down your throat.
I guess my list would be.
1. E.T (obv. I actually did play this as a kid. Terrible)
2. FF12 and up.
3. D3 was a giant let down.
4. Mario Sunshine really let me down, had a lot of hopes for a new Mario 64 type game with better graphics. Not a glorified super soaker :(
5. Festers Quest for the NES. No really, screw this game. Fell in love with the Adams Family when I was young, and was so excited to see this under the tree at Christmas. I gave it 2 days, until I finally shelved it.

Pulse ammo was not easy to find and the components required to make it were also used for other weapons/quests. The only way to get it was in disk 2 or 3 (I forget which) in that high tech town, which was either random drop or from mugging a limited encounter monster.
The card game wasn't what broke FF8, it was the combination of being able to hit level 99 after 2 hours on the starting island and being able to junction drain hp on your attack for your characters so you'd never have to heal against anything except for the 2 undead creatures in the game.

Warhammer Online: First big MMORPG burn. Just such a massive failure of a game, and it seemed to be caused mostly by the arrogance of Mark Jacobs. They got plenty of feedback and criticism during the beta, but it was like they refused to acknowledge that the game wasn't perfect so they ignored it all.
Dragon Age: Awakenings: I still think it must have been bugged, this expansion was so brokenly easy that I have to assume it was a programming error. It was so utterly effortless even on nightmare difficulty that I eventually decided to try without magic items, and I was still able to auto-attack my way through all but the end boss, which took two attempts because I wasn't making the slightest effort the first time after being able to faceroll everything up until then by literally just holding down move-attack. Such a letdown tacked onto what had been one of the best single-player games ever.
Diablo III: NT
Neverwinter Online: Just the latest example of everything that's wrong with modern gaming, and a large step towards destroying my favourite genre. It's the McDonalds of gaming -- intentionally low quality, made by people who have no professional integrity whatsoever and are glad to produce garbage in order to minimize production costs. It's killing the MMORPG genre.
The Sleeper: Just wanted to squeeze in an amateur "game" since it's the P99 forum and all. Toop/Kegz's server is probably the most hilarious and memorable failure in EQEmu history, and the worst example of non-profit gaming that I've ever seen. #1) Echo the Dolphin. What is even going on in this game?
Did you ever make it to Big Blue?
The story is damn simple, you just have to play through the game and actually beat the levels to understand what is taking place, not just fuck around on each using passcodes.
5. Final Fantasy 13 - Hey Square-Enix, take my childhood, turn it into a linear shithole with only one redeeming character (Lightning), and then make it 30+ hours to even get to the open world I love about FF. Fuck you, Square.
As oppose to what? They were all linear, and as far as I know, still are (Stopped at 9).
Those games were the worst at holding your hand despite my love for 2, 3 and 7 (Early on the bandwagon saying it's good again).
Only issue I have with it is how it develops after the first disk.
Exploring a continent shrouded in dangerous mist and going off to discover the new one was neat, after that the whole world opens up and it destroys that sense of isolation and mystery the game once had.
2. Zelda 2 - The Adventures of Link
Well Nintendo knew they screwed up I think by the top-down view returning properly to Gameboy/SNES sequels. Trying to merge a top-down adventure with a platformer was risky, probably not worth messing with the Zelda franchise over. Not much of a fan of the N64 Zelda games either
I feel bad that it an Mario 2 were badly received (I liked both, Mario 2 is one of my favourites). I it began Nintendos slide into playing it safe and shoving out repetitive sequels. That's the sad thing, the fans made their beloved franchises crap.
2) Silent Hill - just fucking awful imo.
Loved it. It looked like shit, but for its time it created tension and fear, far more than any damn 3DO or SegaCD horror game did.
I didn't get far in it, but the push through the school with the flashlight was freaky for an age before Doom3 and all it's ilk ruined survival horror.
3) Ghosts N Goblins - for the exact reasons that everyone else hates that god-forsaken game.
I loved it for the exact same reason everyone hated it. It's one of those games that you can honestly assume that no one beat that wasn't buggy or broken somehow.
In fact, this makes me want to play it again...
The real problem with FF8 was how easy it is to break the game with the card game. Of course you don't HAVE to play the CG, but the game basically shoves it down your throat.
You don't need the card game to break it (We're talking about a fucking FF game, they baby you already), just spend 2 hours farming the beginning mobs outside the Garden and set yourself up a nice list of ____3 spells and the game is a breeze without even min/maxing.
I only started doing that because I fucking hate the button mashing required to use GFs and found with this that you can just melee everything to death.
Pulse ammo was not easy to find and the components required to make it were also used for other weapons/quests. The only way to get it was in disk 2 or 3 (I forget which) in that high tech town, which was either random drop or from mugging a limited encounter monster.
Why sacrifice it for other weapons/characters weapons?
The damn emo is your major damage dealer with the R1 timing hit and his limit break once you get his best weapon.

I'm a completionist, not a min/maxer. The two aren't even close to the same thing. :)
The card game wasn't what broke FF8, it was the combination of being able to hit level 99 after 2 hours on the starting island and being able to junction drain hp on your attack for your characters so you'd never have to heal against anything except for the 2 undead creatures in the game.
Glorious moment when you met Tri-Face in Galbadia garden who turned it 100 Drains in stat attack into you hitting yourself for 9999.
Oh and getting levels was only a bad thing anyway, since you'd only grow weaker as you leveled up due to all the enemies leveling along with you. Can't think of one game where enemy scaling is not the most obnoxious thing. For bosses I can understand it, but for every regular enemy, not so much. You feel no sense of progress being lvl10 or lvl99 if the same damn dinosaur requires the same amount of hits and hits for the same percentage of your hp bar. Same as gdi Oblivion where at lvl50 you'd run into nothing but goblin warlords that took like 900 melee hits with maxed longblades max strenght Umbra.

FFXIII was possibly the worst RPG experience I've ever had. Might as well be watching a soap opera.
Seriously corny dialogue and storyline. Hyper-linear gameplay. Lose.

I played it some, and as much as i don't like pvp, the global pvp was really a lot of fun even being a level 30 and being destroyed by max levels just having some evils come in and try to take over your town and having a bunch of allies come in to defend was a blast. That doesn't exist anymore though, you don't ever need to leave the main city once you reach level 10 and get there its just instant que instant que instant que to max level. instant raid que instant raid que instant raid que.
There is no exploration in wow anymore.

was DDo the one where there were like 10 levels max, and you formed your group in a city got a dungeon quest and entered the instance? like no outdoor zones existed?
I heard a lot of people had high hopes that just were crushed.

Initially, there were 10 levels. The D&D game system was designed based on a 20 level system, then you became "Epic." But later, DDO went up to 25.
But there were outdoor zones.

A few people have said they hated Zelda 2. Which doesn't make sense to me. I mean, by today's standards it's a crappy game. However, back then, it was only 1 of 2 games. So there was no standard style for Legend of Zelda.
They were trying a different style for the gameplay because side scrolling beat em ups were "the thing" at that point. (Faxanadu, Battle for Olympus.. etc)
As far as my five.
5: Dead Island
I don't know where the hype for this game came from. I could understand wanting to try something new, but unlike Zelda 2 in it's prime, there has been a standard for Zombie games. Creators of Dead Island completely deviated from the standard to bring you a action-rpg-morrowind style Zombie killer... and it was balls. Please get your rpg out of my zombie killing.
4:T&C Surf - NES
For serious - I used to have this game as a wee lad and I could not figure out how to fucking surf. As a matter of fact, I went down the street from my office in Middletown Delaware to a little mom-n-pop video game store, and they had TnC Surf. So I picked it up thinking, "Oh, well maybe I just didn't understand how to play it as a child" FUCK NO! This game is stupid hard to comprehend.
3: Resident Evil 4
I hate babysitting games or missions. I hate that I can't move and shoot. I hate the vendor guy. "Whuuddya buyin?" "I'm buyin your mom for the night"
2: The Last of Us
I'm actually playing through this now. The story and graphics aside, this game is shitty when it comes to mechanics. For example, why can't I fight off the clicker things when they attack me? And yet, in a couple cut scenes, Joel does it with no problem. Secondly, the AI is horrible. Whenever you have people following and they say "be quiet!" but then go fucking sprinting down the hall way. Honestly, I played The Last of Us pretty late, and there was a lot of hype built up about how great and polished it was - but when you come to the foundation of it all, the game is shit. Also, if you're trying to make a realistic survival horror, I don't think that health bars should play any role. When I shoot a human (not a zombie) with a revolver in the fucking chest, they should go down - not say "OW DAMN!" and keep shooting.
1: Since people have, already said WoW and FF13 I have to pick something different so I will go with Mass Effect.
This is another of those highly hyped games, but it was shit. I'm a huge fan of bioware, but imo, they fucked up big with this game. It feels so empty and pointless. The way you choose which planet you fly to and survey, it just feels like a glorified stage selection screen. They give you the option to "make choices" but sometimes the dialogue is forced on side quests, which is bullshit. I could understand if it was part of the main mission, but side quests? come on. Also, the whole thing with having to discover different transmission and crash sites on planets is dumb. As far as I know, there is no incentive to do it besides getting an achievement. (Although, I'm sure at the end there is some mega prize which I'm not willing to care about)
I played mass effect for a good while, but I just became extremely disinterested very quickly into my play sessions.
Honorable Mention: L.A Noir.
Oh I can figure out if they are lying by looking at their face? Fuck no I can't.

From what I remember it was just very different than the original and rubbed me the wrong way, some of the sidescrolling dungeons and bizxarre other things. having to go through a pitch black cave with random platforms and bottomless pits to find the candle at the end was a pain in the ass, i might try it again.

I remember the Adventures of Link-- one of my favorites when I was a kid. The graphics, sound effects, and music were all perfect. Obviously radically different from the first, but ultimately a lot more fun imho. It read more like the typical action RPG than the original Zelda even did-- world map, zone-in towns, training spells, etc.
I also had a game genie, which made the game infinitely more entertaining. NES games are ridiculous in the first place, so I cheated constantly. Excitebike cheats were the best.

It was basically a tamer EQ. My favourite thing was raiding towns with my fellow Flowers until the Allaince zerged themselves to liberation.
Then they began doing shit like making town guards hard to kill/repop and making the windriders impossible to kill.
After that they removed open world PvP as everybody funnelled into the battlegrounds.

Yeah, it's in the SaGa franchise. It was super-innovative and remarkably strange, but it just sucked so, so bad. It was also notoriously difficult, to the point of making it not enjoyable. I love gamble-oriented characters and the reel system (what most of the game mechanics are built upon), but it also failed. It's usually found on "Worst Games of All Time" lists.
It was almost universally panned as a total failure ;___;

Yeah, classic turn-based, menu-oriented RPG's just aren't really made anymore. Every RPG now has to have some revolutionary innovation to the system.
So, so sad. Give me the predictable menus and ATB any day, as long as the story is good. I think developers lost sight of why people play RPG's to begin with.

Yeah, I think the MMO comparisons ring true. Reminds me of FFXII. Awesome art direction/graphics, HORRIBLE STORY, CHARACTERS, AND BATTLE SYSTEM.
Holy crap, it was exactly like playing an MMORPG. "Hey I'm controlling this one person in an action RPG and the rest of my party is run by AI. Check out this minimap-- just like WoW! THIS IS FUUUUUUN." Good God, I got bored with that system so fucking quickly.
Plus, they never even really developed the characters at all. Every single time you'd zone into a new area or travel somewhere, there were ample opportunities to have characters talk to eachother, cut scenes, deepening of character backstories, motives, etc. But they just didn't do it. They went 100% pure "pseudo-political intrigue" story, which virtually every other Final Fantasy did while ALSO developing deep characters with complex motives and desires. Overall, I'd say that FFXII was almost as much of a disappointment as FFXIII. Needless to say, Square-Enix doesn't make good games anymore imho.
