My uncle was at E3 the year after Luclin was launched, he worked for Acclaim before they were run out of the business for making such shitty games. He asked an EQ Dev and they said that nobody fucking knows. In-house they used Look-lin, Loose-lin, and Luck-lin.

True Story.

in general the soft c only occurs before i, e or y, except in certain words like "arcing". or sometimes before oe or ae in greek words like caesar (mmmm.....)

to me the only debate is in the pronunciation of the u

Luck-lin.

Consequently, how can there be an incorrect pronunciation of a made up word when we have real words with different pronunciations?

Toe-may-to, Toe-mah-to. Both are correct.
Oh and forgot the southern pronunciation, 'mater.

I prefer Luck-lin

Qeynos was a mystery as a kid I pronounced it Kwee-nos (nose with a soft s)

wasnt until I think eq2 when they added in voice mods and i heard it spoken Key-nos

Erudite was another tricky one when i first heard it, i was like 12 =p

think i called them err-uh-dites

it will always be luck-lin to me, loose-lin just sounds stupid. and frankly offensive to be calling that poor girl lynn loose...

I could see Luke-lin. Luclin is named for Sir Lucan, which like the King Arthur character is pronounced with a K, not an S, sound.

But in my mind, the extra consonant between the vowels should change the pronunciation. So, no long U. Luck-lin.

Definitely not Loose-anything.

mines really weird but ive been saying it this way since i was a kid playing ff3 on the SNES. i say

chalk - a - boo (but without the l sound in chalk)

ive heard cho ko boe

choke a boe

ect

Loose-lin? There are two consecutive consonants in Luclin, therefore it'd be either luck-lin or look-lin. For the english language both would fall under the rules.

Not the worst butchering of an expansion I've heard tho. When Velious first came out I had a friend constantly call it "Velashious". I had no flipping clue what he was talking about, and thought he was having a stroke.

This reminded me....back around velious we had a coworker start playing who butchered a lot of the names. This was a middle aged man and he had his own lexicon going:
Potions were called "portions"
Lake of Ill Omen was "Lake of Ill-e-ome"
Cougar claw earrings were "Courage claw earrings"
And my favorite ....charisma was "chism"

He never made it to Luclin so I'm not sure how he would have translated that one.

It's pronounced Luck-lin, heard it said by SOE employees before. However, that sounds stupid and I say Loose-lin.

Also others words like lucid and Lucinda are pronounced similarly to lu in lunar. For a word to be pronounced with that hard "ck" noise it would need to have a ck, like duck, luck, f*$k, chuck.

Considering the hardcore stance all "loose-lin" pronouncers are taking, I think I see why the development team doesn't take the community's opinion at large when it comes to "classicness" :)

You guys can't even pronounce the expansion's names right!

True Story.

i believe this story.

the moon being called "luclin" was a part of everquest lore before the expansion came out. i can't find a solid date for when the Luclin server opened, but by looking at a few old Zam pages i have confirmed that it was open as early as February 2001. (9 months before SoL's release)

IMO once the expansion came out and it became a more common word, SOE adopted the "grammatically correct"/double-consonant pronunciation in order to seem brainy-er? or something. there are some WEIRD words that don't follow typical grammar rules, though, and i feel that Luclin should have been one of them. LUnar LUCid.... Luclin. flows off the tongue way better with a soft C sound.

It's already been pointed out, but a c followed by a consonant in the English language is pronounced hard as a "k" e.g. lucrative, clear. A c followed by a vowel is soft e.g. lucid. Luclin has a c followed by a consonant, so it's almost certainly hard.
