Hey my "npc has no face" thing fixed itself; love when that happens. My friend installed P1999 setup last night. when he logs in, he gets to the server select screen; but no servers show up on the list. He's convinced his isp is blocking port 5998 (but he said port 80 is open) !? Does this make sense?

Since when block isp ports? He might consider his router.

It's possible his ISP is blocking it. But like Tronjer said - I'd check the router, firewall, Anti-virus/protection software first.

If his ISP is in fact blocking that port, I'd call them and complain. If they don't fix it, I'd get a new ISP.

You wouldn't be able to log in if the port was blocked, how do you think hes getting to the server select screen >_>

That's what I thought too, Rog. Thanks for the replies :)

Good point and one I may have potentially thought of, had I had more coffee and wasn't up too late beating on things in the sewers. :o

I've had this exact problem for a LONG time. I did everything...took my router out of the equation, disabled the firewall and all AV software, tried using the direct IP instead of the mirror, uninstalled and reinstalled the client...and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember atm, lol.

My problem started becoming more serious as the population increased. Back when there were a couple hundred players peak, I had no problems. When the population went over 400 or so...BAM. No servers on the select screen.

I think it may either have something to do with how your ISP routes you, or what the delay time between communicating servers is. There is just enough delay in ping for the server screens not to show up. When there are more people logged in...it creates more delay.

I thought my ports might be blocked too...but then I realized that I wouldn't be able to log in at all. Heh.

I don't know what it is. I now have to try to log in sometimes 100+ times before I see servers. It ain't fun, but I just don't know how to fix it...

I did notice last night that I was having to make fewer attempts as the number of people online dropped. I still had to continuously try over and over...but I was able to finally get in. I was basically shut out for most of last week, lol.

EDIT

I'm convinced it's delay now. I just logged in and servers popped right up. 5am EST and 319 people on. No doubt in my mind it's some kind of communication delay. No way to fix that, I don't think.

My friend has a crappy connection. So perhaps that's it?

Finally figured out what MY particular issue is.

Always goes back to basics. You know, "is the damn thing plugged in?" kinda stuff.

I checked my speed. 0.5mbps download and 1.5mbps upload on a 15mbps connection.

Modem issue. Meh.

Servers not populating on server select is simply a latency issue. Finding out what your own particular problem is - that's the hard part.

In my experience yes it has to do with a slow/crappy internet connection, especially when using wireless and ESPECIALLY on unencrypted networks. However EQEmu has a small bit of info on it in their FAQ that tells you how to flush your DNS (it did correct the problem for me once)
