View Full Version : Monks need money too!

I played a monk on live from classic through the beginning of PoP before perma retiring and I was always always always broke. Even after getting a tink bag and large burlap sack and a weight reduction coin purse I kept changes of gear in them and had nearly no room for loot.

So far I've spent time as a level 10 killing skellies in NRO for hours to sell bones and saved up enough ca$h for an EBM and got some mesh armor from friendly folks in upper guk. I appreciate those who've given my lil guy some hook up's...thank you!

Do any monks have tactics or suggestions for making good money while still making xp? really to just camp loot you have to fight greens since you won't have any AC. What does anyone else do...tradeskills? Or, are we just doomed to be poor except for the rare mega drop we might get?

Same as any other class, get high enough level, kill seafuries hill giants spectres guards etc.

my advice, Lesserfaydark Nybright Sisters. They drop bronze wapons almost 100% of the time. doable at level 8-12 (maybe higher for melee)

Once you are of adequate level, around 20ish park your fanny in Highkeep and get gobby groups untill your mid 30s, theres a vendor upstairs, pull pull pull sell. Rinse repeat. 20ish - 34/35

a GREAT option also, when you can solo them, Gargs drop Gargoyl eyes, 9plat item weights 0.2wt a few places to camp them, the easiest being OOT i would say you need to be in your high 20s low 30s to make this worth while.

Advice? Screw weight. Loot sell.

Get groups near vendors, hh, hk, oasis... loot up, sell.

Screw weight. Sell sell sell. Use that coin to buy better armor... rinse repeat.

I will say this time around is easier, decaying skels dropping cloth and rusty wpns that sell for gold? pfffttt I sure don't remember that!

And it isn't as easy to solo seafuries as a monk as it may be for other classes...... druids your turn to pull hate!

These are great ideas, thanks! Of course everyone needs plat. The difference is we are the only class grouping, pulling, killing and looting nothing...not even the coin. The price we pay for awesomeness I suppose :P

Sounds like the best way will always be solo camping the good drop mobs that are low blue/green. Even with a vendor close by we can't sell and keep going; we need a bank to drop the change! At level 10 I'm already at 14 stones weight with my mace and if I get 30 copper on me I'm overweight and my AC drops like a rock.

Could also farm Willowisps for greater Lightstones, which sell for 4pp at vendor. Still better than collecting bone chips.

LOL...maybe they'd give my monk a dagger to use as well!

I toyed around with monks on Live back in the day. Is it really that beneficial to stick to the weight limit? They can wear up to leather, right? Couldn't you just wear armor and loot like any other character? At least at lower levels?

I'm very curious. I've made a monk but only gotten him to lvl 4 or 5 or somewhere around there. Might play him more at some point.

you can turn any player into a bank if they will /split with you.

/split 2 or /split 10 or w/e depending on how much coin you need to change to pp and it will change your lesser coin to pp and if you both do it you end up with the same amount of money only now its all pp instead of 4512378 copper.

If you sell for 4pp at a vendor, you are missing out on 6pp. Take all the GLS you can carry and go to the Gypsies in NK or the DE's in S Ro. There's one in each camp where you give the stone, they give you a book. You sell the book for 10 pp. I spent my low teens on Wisp Island (Erud's Crossing) soloing wisps with my Enchanter and filled up on stones. I made several hundred pp at turn in time.

This is an awesome way to reduce that coin weight! I learned of this only about a month ago. I even will group up with someone in the zone I am in to do a split. It helps us both.. I no longer destroy all my copper and silver..

If, on my monk, I ever wanted to kill things quickly for the purposes of making plat, I killed things that were easy enough that I didn't often have the danger of dying. If they can't kill me, the monk weight limit doesn't matter. I never had the experience of being a main tank in remotely challenging content, so even in groups the weight limit didn't stop me.

I really only paid attention to weight limits if I was soloing for experience and I couldn't go non-stop, though even then I couldn't tell you how much of a difference the extra AC made.

If you end up using armor and weapons that are heavy enough to put you near or past the weight limit, then you might as well ignore it completely.

There's a bug that allows you to invite yourself and split with yourself. Target yourself and '/invite x'. Anything can be in place of the 'x'. While grouped with yourself, you can split with yourself and turn copper to plat as long as you have at least one plat to start. That is the only effect of being grouped by yourself, as far as I can tell.

It's definitely a bug and may be considered an exploit, though, so this post may not even be considered appropriate...

Also, I never used weapons (just my fists) unless the weapons were VERY light weight (with my monk on live). I guess the damage from the EBM is worth it? I was poor for a LONG time. All of my items / weapons were ones I got myself in groups. I eventually could afford to buy a few nicer upgrades but this was into Luclin times. I made a killing going to the Grimling Forest, collecting Acrylia and selling. This was a HUGE source of money and I could finally get some nice stuff for my monk. :-)
So, I guess you need to decide if the heavier stuff which you are wearing / using / carrying is worth it. You are supposed to be a monk who is above such worldly possessions. ;)

yeahm but trust me, you hit lvl 50 and you still have leather.. lol you have to loot and sell, and screw weight. provided you're trying to make coin, that is.

The EBM outpaces fists into the mid 30's. Once Kunark is released we'll start seeing a lot of Knuckledusters, Staff of Shielding, Tranquil Staff etc. which are all vastly superior to a monks bare fist. With the epic the monk fist in primary is one of the best choices all the way through Kunark. I had epic fist+SoS through Kunark and a lot of Velious. There are tons better than epic fist in Velious.

It is kind of a shame, but for balance they couldn't leave the monks naked fist as a dominating weapon in the game.

I made my first 10-15k on handmade backpacks and Wu's, but with the lack of global auction and the increase in tailors, this isn't as doable.

Except for FBSS and a few others, monk gear's not that expensive. That's the good news. Bad news is, unfortunately, there aren't a ton of great options in classic.

A couple things: Don't worry about weight till level 30. At lv. 50 the ac penalty is 5 per 1 weight, but for much of my career it was close to 1 ac/weight or less. Definitely group in HK, if you're that concerned about money then sell left goblin ears, can get 5-10p per.

Good call farming up an EBM, now farm up a second one. They're awesome till 30, and you can resell then (30 is when fists become better). HQ bear pelts sell well as well, you might be ahead to farm those now instead of bone chips.

A couple other solid platinum camps - ass/sup in LGuk 30-38 or so, you've got a chance at a TBB to wear till FBSS or sell. Efreeti in sol b around 45 or so, just gotta be careful and learn the camp. Unfortunately efreeti isn't super exp, but it's fun and challenging at first (until you get to the room). I hear paineel guards is good platinum, probably starting in your mid thirties. At 50 you can powerlevel for money decently.

Thanks for the info. Great responses to this thread. I appreciate all the feedback from the community! I've got some good ideas now and shouldn't have to spend my 2nd career as a broke monk :)
