I've been watching this thread for some time but I've not seen anyone point this out, so I'm taking the opportunity. If this ain't news to you, then, excuse the noise. :o

Drives are usually rated with an MTTF (mean time to failure), which gives an estimate of how many hours the drives will last before they fail. Usually, the variance associated with an MTTF is not very large. So now consider if you buy 6 drives, from the exact same batch (where the real times to failure are much likely to be closer together than the variance the manufacturer might claim with their MTTF), and put them in the same server at the same time. Now these drives each have the same number of hours on them... so even though you have your nice RAID5 so you can lose a drive without losing data, suddenly, 3 years in, you get multiple drives failing within a week of each other.

I suspect that's what's happened here, but knowing very little about the actual setup, I can't realistically make assumptions. Anyway, this kind of situation actually happens quite commonly; I've heard numerous horror stories.

Hope this is helpful information; if not to Rogean, then to someone else. :)

Sounds like to me greater stability is then formed by spreading the MTTF around. If that is the case, the way to go is to upgrade a drive in 6 months to a year on a continuing basis (a drive here, a drive there, obviously not the same one), which will progressively create better variance in the MTTF and reduce the strength of the failures when they occur.

The obvious downside to this method is the additional costs this method would require in the initial steps of the upgrade, (I might make an educated guess it might be possible to use the older replaced drives later in rotations, if the MTTF still has a good lifespan, to continue variance and save money) long term this would even out as failures become weakened in strength (replacing one drive instead of 2 or more).

When i used to work at a webhosting company we just had a software that would check the health of the drives if the person had paid for it, instead of having to go to a particular server and go through the command line to do diagnose that a drive was about to fail. Most of the time we just had a big screen that would let use know when a server would go down we would go out to the floor and log into the machine and run some quick checks if it still didnt come back up then we would check health of the drivers etc. Most of the time its impossible to gauge when a drive is going to fail sometimes they just fail no matter what you do. It takes time to swap out and clone over the information to a new drive and reinstall.

Yea It's a shitload easier when you have multiple hosts with the same hardware and SAN storage with multiple controllers, iscsi switches, etc. We have nowhere near any of that. Just a few hosts with local storage and free unlicensed esxi (God I wish I had an esxi license.. it would save me a LOT of headaches moving stuff around if I had vcenter).

Atleast this new array has a hot swap this time, yay.

xen is free and does the same stuff as esxi, mix that with a super cheap dell c6100(ebay) for a powerful quad node cluster in 2u.

and he's also neglecting to mention how many times i have raped nizzar in the past, like that one time in freeport where my monk had about 1000 less hp than nizzar and i still got him down to 15% where he had to trak tooth me despite the fact that i had jboots vs sow, was not raidbuffed like him, did not have a fungi, was one level lower, and nizzar had popped two or three prayers of life charges

So I'm a totally new player to p1999 (oldschool EQ1 player though, but the state of the live servers are... ugh..), and I just got everything set up.. followed all the instructions and such.. I'm seeing no servers in the server list after logging in.. I take it that the server is down, and I didn't botch the install process? :)

I followed these steps, btw:
Step 1 - Installation
Install Everquest Titanium to a fresh directory. This directory must be separate from any live Everquest installs and dedicated to EQEmulator.
DO NOT PATCH EVERQUEST. If you patch your Titanium install you will need to delete it and start over.

Step 2a - Forum Account
You will need to create an EQEmulator forum account in order to create a loginserver account. Do so by visiting EQEmulator.org and signing up for a forum account. Activate the account via the validation email.

Step 2b - Loginserver Account
Once you have validated your EQEmulator Forum Account, you must create a Loginserver account by visiting the Loginserver Page. It is strongly suggested that you do not use the same Username and/or Password as the forum account.
Make sure you do not forget this password, it cannot be reset or recovered.

Step 3 - EQEmu Launcher
We have simplified our patching process to utilize a global launchpad for all EQEmulator servers. Please download the EQEmu Launcher.
Install this launcher to handle the EQHost Configuration and Installation of required play files for Project 1999.

Still working on getting Red up, but while people were trying to spam their way into a locked server, I happen to notice something odd with one of the login checks it was outputting, and think I may have found the fix for Error 1018.

Still working on getting Red up, but while people were trying to spam their way into a locked server, I happen to notice something odd with one of the login checks it was outputting, and think I may have found the fix for Error 1018.
