View Full Version : Name your #1 game per platform (even old-school)

So yeah, I'm kinda old. I started playing games on the TRS-80. I'll wait here while some of you look up what that is. And now, just for fun, I'll rattle off my #1 game per platform that I've owned at some point.
TRS-80 : Escape from the Dungeon of the Gods
Nobody's ever heard of it and that's okay. It was a text adventure game along the lines of Zork.
ColecoVision : Montezuma's Revenge
Way ahead of its time. Lots and lots of unique screens and puzzles, instead of the typical Coleco game that repeated the same 3-4 screens over and over.
Commodore 64 : The Bard's Tale
Graphics sucked, sound was almost non-existent. And yet, absolutely brilliant and very atmospheric. I spent many summer nights mapping dungeons by hand on graph paper.
PC : EverQuest
It was my favorite in 2000 and still is. Even with all the graphically amazing MMOs released since, nothing's been able to eclipse the magic of original Norrath.
X-Box 360 : Fallout 3
I've always loved the Fallout franchise but Fallout 3 took it to a whole new level. So realistic I could almost taste the sulfur.
Time to share your picks.

I am not as old as you...
First game I ever got addicted to? Master Blaster... on Nintendo...never could beat that damn game.
Arcade would be X-Men Arcade loved that game... Colossus was the man!
PC would be a tie between Air Warrior 1 and EQ 1
XBox 360 would be Forza 3.

PC : EverQuest
PS3: Uncharted 2
will add more later, work calls!
Well I am only 25 but I was a loud kid so my parents planted me in front of a Game system at a young age lol.
Atari - Battleship (just like the board game but slower yet for some reason better, I was 5)
Nintendo - Zelda or super mario 3
SNES - Super Mario RPG or Legend of Zelda ( A Link to the Past??)
Playstation - Final Fantasy 7 or the first Metal Gear Solid
Playstation 2 - Ark the Lad (Not A well known Strategy RPG but kind of like final tactics with way better graphics and an amazing story)
X-Box- Star wars KOTR
X360 - NHL 09, NHL 10 (I had always played sports games but the new NHL's make me pitch a tent in my pants)
Because PC's have been around since the begining of all these consoles It is fair that I have a few "Equal Favorites".
PC - X- Com UFO defense, Baldur's gate 1 & 2, Everquest, Counterstrike 1.6 and then CS source, Diablo 2, Starcraft and Civilization 4.
I have been to the far corners of the MMORPG universe since everquest and not a single one of them could hold a grain of salt to the world that EQ created. I think Vanguard was the next best thing and if they had marketed it properly and not released such an unfinished product I would be playing it still I am sure.

General Chaos was amazing.
Was always a shitty month when it wasn't on Sega Channel.
On that note, who else was lucky enough to have Sega Channel in their town?

I have a PS3, but my kids play it most all of the time anyway - I haven't been into consoles much... for a long time.
LoL I didnt even have a Sega Genesis! I used to go to a friends house and play general chaos every day until the whole "Does this parents own parents ever feed him" speech came along and then sadly it was over. But also a Little correction to my PS1 game. WU-TANG! If you have never played the Wu-Tang fighting game for PS1 buy a playstation, buy the game and play it, seriously the best fighting game ever made imo.

Super Nintendo - Mario Kart
...
Just to say something a bit tangential: I really thought the SNES Mario Kart was way overrated. I like all of the newer ones better (especially Double Dash and the one on the Wii). I almost always prefer the SNES counterparts of new games but in the case of Super Mario Kart I just think it's overly clunky and hard, and I'm not sure why it gets so much love.
My list:
NES: Mario 3
SNES: Earthbound
Gameboy: Pokemon Red
N64: Majora's Mask
Gamecube: Mario Kart: Double Dash
Wii: Smash Bros (Brawl)
Playstation: Monster Rancher 2
PC: Old everquest.
Appollo
07-13-2010, 05:55 PM
Tangential, good word. For the sake of comparison, I enjoyed Mario Kart on N64 more than I did the one on Super Nintento. F-Zero was also a good game for Super Nintendo. Nonetheless, Super Mario Kart was still my favorite.
Atari 2600: river raid

Sega master system: Phantasy star
Nintendo: Final fantasy
Genesis: Phantasy star 2

NES was Tetris. I still play it on my PC with an emulator.
PS1 was Final Fantasy Tactics. I remember laughing when the clock stopped on one of my games at 99 hours.

Wow this is way way too hard to narrow down to a single game for each console - So I had to condense to my top picks, having been a gamer from the age of 3 or 4 yrs old to present throughout all those influential years of growth and self discovery!
Atari: Original Super Mario with Luigi - Stealth Fighter where you had to land the plane - (It was so hard I used to crash every time: but I remember landing successfully once and being like WHOA...that was amazing!) So hard to recall these games.
NES: Simon's Quest, Zelda & Original Mario Bros, Megaman 3, Gauntlet, Contra, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Sega: Sonic (All of them), Echo the Dolphin - I know theres more but I can't remember!
N64: Goldeneye / Starfox / Super Mario 64
Playstation: Xenogears / FF7 / FFTactics - three way tie. Followed by Metal Gear Solid 1, Resident Evil (1 and 2), Legacy of Kain 1, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Parasite Eve 1 & 2 - Twisted Metal 2 (was quite epic multiplayer). Herc's Adventures (was strangely humor-filled addictive and fun to play Action RPG with multiplayer support for a friend).
GameCube: Resident Evil 4 / Eternal Darkness
Playstation 2: Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy X - Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
Xbox: Halo... Some Desert Storm game with a character who looked like Sadam but was named something else for legal reasons.
Wii: Super Smash, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Anything with Kirby.
Nintendo DS: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, FFTactics a2, Final Fantasy 4, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Chronotrigger (ya I waited along time to play through this one) - New Super Mario Bros.
Arcade: Turtles in Time, Rampage, all the other ones I wanted to play at my childhood birthday parties for free.
Old School PC Favs: Jill of the Jungle. Midnight Rescue, Oregon Trail.
Middle School PC Favs: Castle Wolfenstein, Duke 3D, Zork, Clock Tower (Wow this game was hard)
Newer but still semi recent by comparison PC Favs: Ultima Online, EverQuest, Counter-Strike, Neverwinter Nights, Diablo 1 and 2.
Newest School: World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights 2, Dragon Age Origins, Counter-Strike: Source, Call of Duty 4. Fallout 3, Dead Space, Torchlight - Starcraft 2 Beta, Diablo 3 Demo.

Coleco Vision: Cannot remember the name, maybe Jail Break? prisoner running from guards, I was like 5 years old and the system was a hand me down... cannot remember if Burger Time was this system or Atari, but that might be my choice too
Nintendo: Legend of Kage (best game EVER!!!)... megaman 2/double dragon rocked too
Genesis: hmm... probably Contra Hard Corps
Super Nintendo: Super Street Fighter II (turbo maybe?)
Arcade: Goldenaxe (maybe I, II... no idea which one it was... maybe III!)
Sega Saturn: Virtua Fighter 2
N64: Goldeneye, anyone who says otherwise has no soul
Playstation: Tenchu Stealth Asssassins (SUCH a cool game idea!, too hard sometimes)
PS2: Kengo (sweet poorly known about game, basically train a Samurai for one on one duels) made my friend with the PS2 rent it like 5 times haha
PC: EQ players please don't hate me: Diablo... the original "tap tap splurt" when killing monsters and the whole aura (awesome dungeon feel and music, the pounding drums when you reach the caves at dungeon level 9 with the acid beasts and lightning throwing maelstroms and molten throwing rock dudes is THE best "feeling" in video game history in my opinion, that game had more character than any game I think) to the game outshined EQ for me... although EQ had so much more playability... Diablo got too repetitive, also broke a mouse clicking so much haha

Atari VCS: Atlantis
NES: Super Mario Bros
SNES: Super Ghouls N Ghosts
PC/offline: Age of Empires II
PC/online: Air Warrior
That about sums it up for me. The SNES was the last console system I cared about, as PC's replaced consoles as far as I was concerned. Air Warrior is number 1 across all platforms as my favorite video game and nothing will ever touch it, not even EQ. Before the Atari I had some Pong-clone machine from Sears, but it only had 4 game modes but it doesn't really count. Guess I liked "hockey" the best of what it had.
