Norrath

Imagine a world where each and every choice you make influences your journey,
where the very journey brings you through multiple unique areas,
some filled with friends and others full of ruthless beasts,
yet each offering the sense of adventure that the human mind longs for,

Imagine a world with unique creatures and mystical magic,
where every inhabitant holds various skills of which to use for survival,
some are strong and others are smart but all wish to thrive in this world,
every life is treasured and preserving that life is only part of the adventure,

Imagine a world where the sentient beings gather to exchange their goods,
where "goods" could be words, magic or material items,
in this land everything has a purpose and the skills you harbor are needed,
goods are acquired and goods are sold, the market lives on,

Imagine a world where ancient dungeons await you to stumble upon them,
where the most powerful adversaries protect these dark halls,
only through the cooperation of others can one venture forth,
to find themselves in possession of the most valued of treasures,

Imagine a world where the environment is friend and foe,
where day brings light and the wildlife thrives,
and where night brings darkness and evil runs free,
the dessert brings thirst, the plains bring storms, yet it is all beautiful,

Imagine a world where after years still feels unknown,
where adventure is ever present and secrets lie waiting to be found,
the world changes, and you change with it, friends come and go,
yet with each generation the people still work together,

Imagine a world where you create a story,
where even the simplest thing influences that story,
the story is not yours alone but is shared by many,
others add to your story, while you add to theirs,

Imagine a world where not a moment is wasted,
walking becomes exploring, waiting becomes thinking,
there is never a dull moment or a time in which you regret,
no matter how experienced you are, the land will always surprise you,

Imagine a world where the senses are important as ever,
where the sound of footsteps or the crash of thunder brings terror,
but the sight of a town and friends brings a feeling of safety,
a deep gorge, a volcano erupting, the ocean breeze, the wispy air,

Imagine a world where even your enemies work together,
if one is in danger, they will come in packs,
when they fear the battle is lost, they will run for help,
they use strategy to protect their lives, just as you do,

Imagine a world where it is skill, not looks that earns prestige,
where simply a name strikes fear or favor into others,
one that can adapt to any situation and has helped many,
that is what all in this land strive to be,

Imagine a world where a new reality is formed,
where even though things look different,
they tear away and become the norm,
the eyes and ears change within this world,

Imagine a world where the sky isn't the limit,
and neither is the ocean floor, the impossible becomes possible,
air becomes a platform of which to travel and air becomes breathable,
however, neither the sky nor ocean are any safer than the land,

Imagine a world... created by a man who wanted to share his ideas,
by giving his world to others, it changed and evolved by the life inside it,
he watched his world grow and was there to make it better if needed,
it wasn't for the fame or wealth, he simply wanted to see others enjoy it,

This world... is Norrath, a world not unlike our own,
yet allowing us to be something we could never be,
the unsuccessful become successful, the poor become rich,
but ultimately, it still takes work to get anywhere,

Now.. I ask this,

Imagine a world torn from its creator's hands,
where profit begins to be more important that love,
the story is taken from the citizens, changed, then forced back on them,
the world began to wither and die as the citizens sat and watched,

Please...

Imagine a world where everything is quiet and lonely,
where once trade and friendships flourished, there is nothing,
the remaining citizens look out to the world in sadness,
it was over, the good times could never return,

Many more "worlds" were made as time went on,
each one lacking the feeling that Norrath once held,
the citizens were immature, lacking in skill and saw the world as just a screen,
most of these lands fell, failing to live up to Norrath's success.

One day, hope was restored to the citizens of Norrath, we were asked to...

Imagine a world where old friends reunite and the story of Norrath lives on,
where old lands would be revisited, dungeons and towns alike,
to once again feel part of a living, breathing world,
some felt back at home, while others felt that it just wasn't the same,

Norrath had been revived and with it, new challenges and friends... but then,

Imagine a world where things just don't seem right,
where quests now take but only minutes,
and everyone can easily acquire the things others have worked hours for,'
even death is nothing but a minor setback,

Soon, this world became... a game.

Real life currency could be traded for the world's currency,
the world was dulled in hope to bring more people to pay to play,
and finally, the adventure, the most valuable part of any world,
was replaced by unexplainable teleporting to each and every area,

The population of Norrath had been replaced,
these were not the lands of which we once enjoyed,
and these were not the people of whom we were once friends,
these... were just tourists, they cared nothing of Norrath's history,

They just wanted to play a game!

Imagine a man, wandering in this sundered Norrath,
wishing each day that somehow he could go back home,
day after day, seeing Norrath fall further into ruin,
he watched as his world turned into a joke... a silly game,

It came to the point that only pictures, reading and music could give even a portion of the feeling that Norrath gave...

But one day while looking through old pictures and stories of the old days... he came upon the answer..

Project 1999

"Imagine a world where each and every choice you make influences your journey,
where the very journey brings you through multiple areas,
some filled with friends and others full of ruthless beasts,
yet each offering the sense of adventure that the human mind longs for."

It had been 10 long years since Norrath had died,
but the loyal citizens never gave up hope,
the world has returned and a new journey awaits,
I'm home Norrath... now... who needs a port?

Thank you for the eloquently written post. This perspective is easily lost and forgotten.

Thank you so very much for letting me return to Norrath.

I was 7 years old when I started playing and I'm now 18, its so good to be back. I'm really excited for Ruins of Kunark to be released and even more excited for the eventual Scars of Velious release. Again, thank you.
