View Full Version : Crashing when camping, every time

Kohedron

Just made a new computer, it's working pretty well except for a couple things.

Had to install WINEQ2 so it wouldn't crash while zoning, and it definitely fixed the problem.

But before and after installing it, camping brings up the "Everquest has detected that your client has crashed" or whatever message it is. Every time. Now it's not a huge deal since I can just quick close it and exit out, but for QoL sake and the occasional item swap between characters, it'd be nice to fix.

I also have an issue with web browsing occasionally causing a minute long lock up on my computer, if that adds to any leads

With your browsing issue, id reccomend reinstalling windows on your pc and see and if it still happens, you can rule it to be a hardware issue

Simple, yet elegant. Will try that when I get home from work.

that would be an easy fix hopefully works

Did the compatibility change, still didn't work.

Eventually figured out that the computer was freezing up briefly regardless of what I was doing.

This turns out to be an issue with a mobo needing a bios update to handle SSD's. (If you google SSD freeze a whole ton of threads come up)

Fixed everything in P99 as well as all other freezing.

So far that trick worked for me. Was having same problem-crashing while logging to char screen. Tried it a few times last night and no crashing yet. Will let ya'll know if it crashing comes back.

Nice! Which fix are you referring to? Just asking for anyone who may come across this thread in google searching for a solution

Unfortunately, I spoke too soon. Seems to have helped but I still get crash message 1 out of 10 log outs.
Seems once I logged out completely, I haven't had a crash since. Thanks for the tip "right click your Eq shortcut and goto properties and set compatibility mode to xp"

I have this problem every time I zone, camp, die, etc. Literally takes me 10+ login attempts to even get into the game. Something is way off for me.

Thanks a ton! This seems to have fixed my problems. Camped out and logged back in about 10 times with no issues so far.

I'm on WIn8 and I get the crash when camping but I also get random crashes constantly... I never got this when I played prior (over a year).

So I'm trying the compatibility mode, but do I choose Windows XP regular, SP2, or SP3?

Thank you.

You need to go to the actual .exe the batch file is pointing to. I believe its eqgame.exe.
Right click that and run in compatibility mode.

I also found i used to crash with default UI on.

Downloading the default UIs from https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11949 seems to fix that for me.

Tried doing this on my windows 10 ssd machine -- right clicked "launch titanium" and selected run as administrator. Only problem is, it fails to launch - I get an error message saying "cannot find eqgame.exe.'

I see the above comment about needing to do something with that eqgame.exe file -- but I also remember the p99 install guide says never to run that exe, as it will try to patch and that will mess up the ability to run p99.

Any more idiot-proof instructions here?

thank you!!! I can't wait to camp without crashing :)

I have no idea if this is relevant in your case but:

I used to crash every 2/3 times I camped. I recently loaded Duxa's UI and have since then crashed 0 times. It's been a month or so now so I feel confident saying that has been a 100 % solution for me. I had to switch the UI for ever character. For a while I kept the old UI on my mule and when I would camp him out I would still crash most of the time.

Why this is the case I have no clue but yeah, that has worked for me.

This is perhaps unrelated, but Ive been crashing while zoning fairly often starting several days ago. Rarely had that happen before.

* Go to eq folder (the one with Launch Titanium.bat in it)
* Find, or search, for eqgame.exe in the same folder
* Right-click on eqgame.exe and choose Properties
* Click Compatibility tab
* Check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for', and choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
* Click Apply button, then OK etc
* Run game using Launch Titanium.bat

Works for me (Win 10 with ssd)

Im not sure is this is related either, but I have a vpn that launches on start-up. I took auto launch off and now do it manually after about a minute after start-up. Crash rate is way down while zoning now.

I've had a similar experience with a VPN (tunnel bear) fixing an array of P99 problems.

Mine did that. I went into the EQ folder and went to the eqgame.exe and set the compatibility to Windows XP (service pack 2). It stopped crashing for me.

I have had this issue for as long as I can remember. Read through this and check marked the compatibility version for eqgame.exe to Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

Can confirm that this does work. I have yet to crash while camping now. It did wipe out my friends list and UI/hotkey settings like it was my first time logging into the characters. The one slight complaint that I have is that now the graphics seem a bit less fluid, tiny bit of choppiness. Other than that, everything works great!!

Just installed yesterday (which came with its own set of issues) and this is one of two problems I am currently dealing with. I will try the compatibility mode first, sad that the graphics quality may be reduced though :(

Yes I also confirm this works. Have been fighting with EQ graphics quality since 2001. Switching back to service pack 3 reduced zoning time and seems to have eliminated crashing, however the graphics are less fluid as stated. It is annoying especially when in first person view and then particularly when turning around. It didnt wipe out friends list for me or hotkeys, but the first time I logged back on none of my toons were loaded. I rebooted and they were back, hump.

Its too bad we have to switch back. EQ graphics on Windows 10 was the best I ever experienced.

Make sure that your in-game resolution is the same as your desktop resolution, saved me a few problems. The comparability thing and the resolution change seems to have cured this for me.

Windows 10 - windowed mode with WinEQ 2.15 Lite:

Right click on WinEQ2.exe shortcut -> compatibility tab -> compatibility mode -> Windows 7

Works like a charm.

Change resolution manually in eqclient.ini (EverQuest folder) under VideoMode section.
Use Notepad++, save with ctrl+s, close.

Enjoy

I don't know if they have changed it over the years being that this post is from 8 years ago, but when I go in to properties I do not see anything for XP mode. I believe I did this years ago and it worked but since reinstalling on new computer I no longer have that option. Is there any other fixes for this problem

For anyone else looking - you set it on the target of the shortcut (the exe) not on the shortcut itself.

It looks like Windows 10 Pro compatibility mode does not work with Titanium. It wont recognize the Launch Titanium.bat file that launches P1999 as a valid program. It will only let me target the original EXE files. Any ideas?
Looks like most problems with new computers is that the original EQ ran on a 32bit system and we all run 64bit now. I always crash when logging off, on a rare occasion it wont crash, but 99% of the time it does. This really sucks when raiding and you need to log for a reset, ect.

Right mouse click on your Eqgame.exe, click the compatibility tab, Check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and change the drop down menu to "Windows XP". Apply changes, click OK.

Set compatibility mode on eqgame.exe - not the shortcut. Also if xp sp3 doesn't work fully, try sp2.

Necro'ing this post, as it is the first Google/Duck Duck Go result, and if you're dumb like me, did not know how to implement said fix in Win10. I have seen numerous other threads complaining they could not get Win10 to open the compatibility mode, probably because they/you were doing what I was doing; attempting to run it on the "Launch Titanium" bat file with nothing less than frustration, because there is no option to do so.

If you try to edit the "Launch Titanium" file, you'll notice it redirects to "eqgame" or "eqgame.exe". Simply search your EQ folder for this, there is only one such .exe. Right click > compatibility mode tab > Windows XP (Service Pack 3) > ok/accept

There's another, much slower way to do this, as well. On your Desktop Search bar/Cortana simply search for "compatibility mode". This will lead Windows to launch an automated program for the process. If EQ does not show on the populated list to choose from, simply select "not listed". It will allow you to navigate to the desired folder. Selecting your EQ folder will give you several options, but we are again looking for "eqgame" or "eqgame.exe". Windows will automatically select Windows XP (service pack 3). It will then force you to "test" the program. Simply hit test, then next, and finally "finish with these settings" or whatever equivalent you have.

From now on, when launching EQ, you should be asked for permission to run the program. Over the last 24h, I haven't had the camping crash issue. Hope this helps whatever future nostalgia enjoyer finds this.

Edit: I am dumb to not have noticed this thread is already several pages long, this explanation is probably already in here lmao

compatibility mode on eqgame.exe fixed the crashing but totally bugged out my resolution, graphics (made them far worse), UI, hotkeys, everything, wipes it all out and have to start from scratch every time I launch the game. It won't save any of my adjustments. Please help.
