View Full Version : Love trying old games, I want to start my first OS Mmorpg here!

I've heard of EQ countless times being a father to MMO gaming, how fun it was and how heart pumping pvp got.
I want to start here, I think I have Red 99 client so, I'm probably forced to play pvp servers first. Any tips that could help me out or help me out ingame with getting started (what to do, how to pvp, some grinding locs) ? I'm so excited to finally get this. Correct me if I'm wrong on anything here. I'm pretty new to this.

If you can log into red you can also log into regular 99, they're both the same cleint hehe, if there's one thing I'd recommend on this server it is to have patience, unlike other eq servers this server (and even red imo) has a slower and more livelike exp rate than any other eq server, but being able to stick it out and break 50+ as a result is really rewarding.
Starting out I'd say have persistence and try to get yourself up to grouping level. If I had to predict when that would be I'd say it begins around 6-7 in ec or maybe 4-5 on orc hill in gfay :)
If you do decide to go red, disregard any thoughts of grouping in your first while and get ready to get on the grind, be wary of others too :D
in either case I'd recommend one of my fav starting areas to you: West Freeport. If you can't go there then I'd recommend starting in the butcherblock or steamfont area then headed to gfay, either one will do for 1-5. at 6 in Freeport you can start killing in EC more successfully but watch out for the griffin that roams mid zone and the air elemental that roams toward the tunnel on the south side of the zone, and if gfay then look into killing orcs in the northern part of the zone 6+ :)

Kelethin / GFay is always a fun way for newcomers to start. The town itself is amazing (tree forts!) with good music.
Of course, Freeport gives you the option of having the EC Tunnel right next door for high end buffs and some hand outs if you're lucky.

Be prepared for a rough grind. This game is unlike any other when it comes to frustration/reward. It will kick you in the dirt. You will know how persistent you are after you play this game awhile. Is this your first time playing EQ? Or did you play on live?

Right click on monsters to consider them. If the color of the text is yellow or red, avoid them. If it's white or blue, attack them (later, you'll only be able to handle blues alone, and soon enough you'll need to group to handle monsters at all). Once you hit level 5 or so you can head into Blackburrow to group up. Refer to the Wiki maps - your starting city is Halas and the zone with the bears is Everfrost.

Depends entirely on what you want to do in the game. If you want to tank, a good starting character is a paladin. If you want to heal, cleric is ideal. If you want to DPS, rogue or monk. If you want to solo a lot (though that's not the point of EverQuest), there are a lot of options - most casters can solo in one way or another.
By the way, when you die you need to find your corpse and loot it, otherwise you'll lose your items.

Is it a pain trying to find it? I guess I can go pally.

It can be a pain... especially in dark places when you are a race that can't see well in the dark.
Learn to use the command: /loc and the basic zone grid system.
Type that and Enter before you die. It'll tell you the coordinates of where you died. You'll need this before you start learning how to tell where you are by sight.
If you forget to hit /loc before you die, you can enlist the help of a necromancer or bard to find your corpse.
Also, a good idea is to make a macro with /loc so you can just push the button instead of having to type it. You can access macros in the 'socials' tab of the command window (the one with invite/sit/camp/attack/etc.): scroll over until you see empty buttons, then right click and set up a macro called Loc with command /loc. Then you can drag that to your hotbar and click it for easy use.
I should also mention that EverQuest has more roles than the typical tank/healer/DPS trinity of modern MMOs. Enchanters and bards excel at crowd control (making sure your group is only fighting one monster at a time); shamans excel at buffing your party and slowing the enemy. Also, different classes have different degrees of complexity and gear dependency. Warriors and rogues are two of the simplest classes; enchanters and bards are two of the most complex. Paladin's a little more complex than a warrior but way less reliant on gear.

What class/race are you?
You can go to East Commonlands, go to the tunnel, ask people for buffs in /ooc (damage shield and regen are the major ones), then start whacking on enemies. Or forego the buffs altogether and kill stuff outside the Freeport gates or in North Ro or East Commonlands.

Kill stuff in the front yard (east commons) there. Bats, rats, snakes and bugs and baby orcs. You might want to look up a 'starting everquest' guide, I'm sure there's a few laying about. Also check out the p99 wiki. Google is your friend.

You don't need anything other than your starting sword to kill level 1 monsters (monsters that have white text when you right click on them). If you died, make sure you pick up your sword from your corpse. Also make sure it's equipped; it should be in your primary hand when you go to your inventory (I).
Also, I think you must be mistaken or playing on a different server; there's no such thing as a halfling paladin here. Do you mean dwarf?

you will die. you will die often. You will have to then go fetch your corpse and get your gear back. You will need to make friends and find places to go and things to do. The game does not hand content to you on a silver platter: you have to make it happen.
And as a result, the game is damn fun, because it isn't so easy you get bored after an hour.
I recommend Befallen once you get to the appropriate level. You can learn the meaning of pain there, and how to be careful. As well as how to know what a good group is. A good group will handle Befallen. A bad group, see my first comments.

May I ask who that is? Also, whats bossing like on this game, I don't want to spoil myself with YT videos, I just want to know how hard it is. + What's this "twisting" with a Bard?

oh sorry, that was a half joke, tiggles ran a stream for a while but is on hiatus now or something. he has powerful characters but tends to do boring stuff with them on stream.
the effect of bard songs is pretty short, usually on the order of 15-20 seconds depending on when you cast them. usually you want to keep as many up as possible at any one time -- between 3 and 5 songs. you have to do this by singing song 1, then stopping the song as soon as its effect takes place so that you can start another. the faster you can switch/twist songs, the more songs you can keep up at any one time.

i can confirm this, although there are ways to ease the load.
generally you will need help from other players to kill 'named' or rare mobs. this isn't much of a problem because most of the game requires you to group with other players to kill stuff -- especially for classes that don't solo very well, and more so as you gain levels.
the toughest stuff in the game takes several groups -- this is where guilds come in
Yes, and being a Bard sounds like it's wrist raping.
It depends on what you do with a bard. If you're just grouping or doing simple single-target soloing, it's not bad if you use macros. You can make a macro (a clickable or hotkeyable button) that stops your current song and starts another one, which basically halves the number of clicks or button presses you need to do. At that point you need to press a button every time a song finishes, i.e. once every few seconds, which is not horrible.
On the other hand, if you want to take down entire zones at once, that can be pretty hard on the wrist. Not quite as much when you get to level 18 and acquire a somewhat higher-range DoT song to use.
For "bossing", there are a few different things that happen. First, when you're leveling, there are named ("boss") monsters that you'll encounter that are tougher and have better loot than their surrounding monsters. You will generally be taking these down in the context of an EXP group, though many people get to a high level and then specifically target certain named monsters that drop very valuable loot, who they can easily kill solo. These monsters don't give any more EXP than any other monster of the same level and don't tend to be all that much stronger (at most, they're generally just a different class than the standard warrior enemy, and higher-level than the surrounding monsters); their main value is better loot.
Second, there are raids, where you take down dragons or the avatars of gods. This requires a large number of people working together, and each person is generally doing just one or two things; raids are actually often somewhat boring compared to grouping, because the presence of so many people means that each person's role is greatly simplified (although more precision is often necessary in fulfilling that simplified role). Several of the biggest raid bosses that drop the best loot are in extremely high demand on this server, with many different guilds able to kill them, so what happens is that people will basically sit at their spawn points waiting for them to spawn, then once they do, amass as many people as they can in their guild to get online immediately (via text message, generally). Raid bosses are somewhat more complicated than typical monsters, but fighting them is not in general all that complicated. There is also no limit to how many people you can throw at a raid boss, so if you happen to have a guild that can log in 100 people on short notice to kill a raid boss, then you can take it down with minimal effort.
