View Full Version : Playing on a work CPU via flash drive, any risks?

I'm contemplating putting p99 on a flash drive and playing on my work laptop during slow days. I work for a Fortune 500 company and wondering if there are any concerns like if I'm going to get flagged by IT. Any input from some tech people?

Thanks

uh. are you allowed to play games while at work?

if not, i'd put it on an tablet with 3g or 4g and play on that instead.

You probably wont be able to connect to the server, IMO.

I play the game off of my personal external hard drive when I travel for work w/ no problems (Also work for F500 company with strict IT, etc.). Just copy&paste relevant files onto HD, re-direct the shortcut to read from the HD, not the C drive, and you are good to go. My work PC sucks so I run the game on the lowest settings but that's a different problem.

is there a chance they can detect him being on gaming ports ?

Chances are probably pretty good if its a big company that the ports required to game here will be blocked. If they aren't blocked they probably have software like the company i work for that detects connectivity times to certain IPs if you rack up alot of connection time to like Youtube or Runescape in my case, then you will get an email from them.

So i learned to only screw with it for like 2 hrs or less a day and i get no issues :)

then you should be fine. i play at work off flashdrive without having to install any files on PC as it already has the directx9.0c on it

Correct, I would redirect the shortcut to read from my flash drive so I wouldn't be installing anything on my company laptop. But wondering if I'll be flagged for connecting to an IP or something for a lot of packets

The only concern I would have here... Is losing my job.

I worked with a guy who used to play a text based MUD whilst working. He had multiple monitors filled with all kinds of different applications and code looking things so noone ever realised that one of those was a MUD. Well, except me when I say something like 'You turn right. You notice an Ogre in front of you.'

Well there is the pretty obvious risk of getting fired for dicking around and playing video games on company time. I know it gets boring working midnight front desk duty at fortune 500 companies, but come on, save EQ for after work.

I run the network for my company, if you're running it over the corporate network it is VERY easily detectable, and you'd eventually get found out.

The other thing to watch out for is if the PC support people run anything that watches for installed programs/running processes. Obviously running it off a flash drive isn't going to show up in your installed programs, but the last company I worked for actually monitored your running processes as well.

I guess it depends on your situation. I could get away with it all day here, partially because of what my job is here (it would be either me or someone who works for me having to bust me), and partially because I know exactly how we're setup.

In the end it's the kind of thing they will fire you on the spot for though, up to you if your job is even worth a small risk.

What ncaptaina said, x2.

If you're not permitted to play, don't. At least not on your work laptop. If you work for a fortune 500, then they will/should have more than adequate monitoring methods.

If you want to play and not be detected, bring in your own device and connect to a nearby network or tether, not your company's private or public network.

My suggestion would be to quit your job so that a better worker can have it and you can sit around playing EQ.

Is there a way to play P99 on an Android/Apple tablet? I didn't think this was possible, but maybe I missed some new development?

At the point you're considering playing a video game and risking your job you might want to take a step back and think about that a little bit.

You can play EQ on a tablet. I know several people in game playing on tablets. I don't know many details, as I have not tried it myself.
