I've seen quite a few new players on red from blue. Very happy to see this. I'd like to thank The Knights Who Say Ni for taking the plunge and making a transitional guild for players like themselves. Probably Jeremy too, he's been on red a lot as well.
It's not the horror story you may have heard about, though it can be. It's not for everyone but as someone who started here on blue and eventually tried red and played long enough to become invested, I highly recommend it.
It's not for life, you don't really need to be high level to have fun. Lots of low level pvp, some grief, but mainly fun. There is just something about playing against both the players and the environment that dramatically increases the immersion.
Your first few weeks, you might even lash out at the people you care about, but if you stick with it, I can almost guarantee you will have some fun :D
If you're one of these people feel free to encourage others to come play by posting about your adventures on red in this thread.
I know some of you have had bad experiences on red, those can and do happen, but if we could focus on the positive, even if for only one thread, I think it might help the guys on the other side of the table who also passionately play this game, we're kinda hurtin atm :(
Hope to see you there!
Thanks

Worth mentioning that a lot of the bad apples have been banned since the server launched...and everyone knows that the launch night was always bound to cause some people to never log back in :p
Knights of Ni have told me themselves that they're enjoying themselves but aren't too familiar with the PvP mechanics, but are learning...so if you feel you're in the same category and have never tried EQ PvP before, then now is a good time to join in the fun :)
I've got a bunch of people started on the server before now with red/blue plat transfers (which have since been frowned on by GMs), and have recently made up some JC stuff for new starters as I know from levelling a naked enchanter that the first 12-16 levels were totally hellish without any stat items :p
If you're bored with sitting in the EC tunnel watching blue prices inflate, give red a try. You can at least try, right? :)

Was thinking of making a red character. I assume melee in general as well as burst dps classes are over-represented with regards to server class make up. Any suggestions on a good class to roll? I've never really been big on pvp but I like the comraderie that comes with it. Yt aint no thang really.
Enc or Cleric would be good, if you want to be one of the bursters, wiz. Anything really, even melee can make if if you have some support. MOTD in Knigts who say Ni! is to expect more players on the 8th. Ya might try to jump in with them around then. If Erudite Necro/sk, I have some extra flayed skin gear sitting in bank you could have.
With eqmac shutting down on the 18th there might even be a few more players joining around that time also.
+1! :D the camaraderie that comes from playing on red is what keeps me coming back for more.

Right on man, hope to see ya on red soon. msg iady if ya need any help, I dont have much for coin atm but I might have something in bank ya could use.
Thought I would leave this here too, this is a very very basic set of noobie tips for playin on red.
Didn't feel like necroing a thread, noticing lots of new players, thanks to Knights Who Say Ni, and other eq mac players coming aboard. Hope to see more of you come the 18th. Tell your friends.
Tips for players new to the pvp scene, feel free to add more, I'm novice at best. Will edit good ones into list.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Noobie tips
------------------------------------------------------------------
When you can, buy gems with extra money. People can't loot your gems when you die. Best rate (when turning them back into platinum) is carnelians I think but those are like 8g each. Gems have different exchange rates and faction/charisma can make a huge difference on larger exchanges. No real pref here, I use peridots, they are ~10p each which makes for easy trade and tipping money along the way. Beware of shady vendors.
Use the environment. Much easier to spot a noob in a field medding than a noob next to a tree medding, With levitate and the right incline, you can face it, hold down run and slowly climb (works great with trees) some trees have a change in angle mid way and are impossible to climb using this method. Instead, run to a point of higher elevation and levitate over to the change in angle, climb. You can sit and med in most of these spots if you find a point where you no longer sink while just standing there. The further away from a wall the better. Expect hackusations.
Gate. Use it as a escape, not a doctors note to avoid pvp. Meaning, I see too many people gate out of zone. You're gonna have to travel anyway. Set up a bind in zone, shit gets rough, gate and recoup for a counter attack, don't just take your ball and go home. Use critical thought here, this method can be disastrous vs a competent and tracking class.
We have a shit load of heroes. Like everyone, almost every player here was botb or glad, pimp shit, emp whatever. Doesn't mean you can't be too, but let's be real here, it's gonna take time. While you're on your personal journey to greatness, don't forget the simple shit like tash and malo, heals, cures, whatever it is that wont get the KB/YT but will help the grp is worth doing. 9/10 times you wont kill that twink, but banded together, you just might.
Words/pages/runes - low pop and rare drop. Shitty mix for new players, I would suggest as a general practice, save the words and pages till ya hit a city and then sell them at the guild vendors. Don't know who did it, but lvling up, I happened to see almost every research spell I needed at the mage vendors along with mage specific words. Fuckin amazing to say the least. I try to do this now too. Do this on the reg and respond to other players looking for words and tell them to do the same. Could be gold. The wiki has a good spread for seeing what pages are for what class, noobs get thousands of collective plat thrown at you, do your part.
Not getting ganked - what the fuck are you smoking? It happens. Learn to live with it, in the worst case, alt for a bit. 90% of the time if you get corpse camped, you had it coming, the other 8%, bronson, the other 2, random gang violence.
How to avoid that - be a decent human. Shit actually goes a long way. Making friends is the only thing that will really help you on red. The downside to this is that with too many, you end up missing out on a lot of pvp. But, further down the road, you can even have pvp with these friends and still have fun. It's a game. I play the wild card. If I don't attack you now, one day I might later, but probably not.
Know your zone, nothin surgical, but at least have rough bearings and know where your out is, your decoy safe spot, a real safe spot, a place to avoid track, vendor ect. All this goes a long way when the big moment comes. You do not want to be caught in a moment of "oh shit!" or "oh fuck!" Those will get you killed.
"Over here" doesn't mean a god damn thing. "To the north!" works. And fuck a loc, who the hell actually has a grid layout in their mind? Takes a little bit of time to get used to but well worth it.
Someone sittin smug in a city? Taunting you? Been a while on this one, not sure if they patched it, but, harmony the guards.
Buy Crystallized Pumice and Cloudy Potions if you can't disspell or invis yourself. they might not have been worth it on blue servers, but on red they can save your life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lot's of other basics along the way, would do the senseheading and /who bound to movement keys and shit but I'm hoping most of you already know those tricks. Gonna try to keep it red. Will add more when I think of em, most are almost very basic tips. Add your own!
Good luck out there

I started on blue and got to about lvl 34 then moved to Red. Was a lot different because of low pop but actually got geared and leveled a lot faster. If you are friendly and decent, chances are you can fall in with a crew. Since there are so few players, there is a large supply of gear just sitting in people's banks that no one would want to buy.
Just yesterday someone gave my warrior cobalt boots and jewel crafted all of my empty slots for free just to help out.
True you will get killed, and some people are dicks. But the forums and the actual server are very different I came to find out, and I would suggest giving it a shot to anyone bored of blue or tired of being just a low lvl no one cares about.

Fame your post finally got me to try red. Trying a paladin atm, enjoying it so far. Name is Sidd.

If you're one of these people be sure to post your experiences so far :)
I tried this last night, but I fear tldr lol, it had to be at least 10 paragraphs just getting started, it's that or over simplifying what has truly been an epic adventure. I'll try to clean it up and post ina day or so, maybe there's room for cuts, I was up pretty late doing it. Stay tuned!

I went from Blue to Red. Made a cleric of all classes. I play in off peak hours, but the rate of xp more than makes up for this. Now my experience is probably very different from the average player's. I've made it to post 30 and have met nothing but nice people that only want to help. I've only had one PvP encounter and it wasn't even against me.
This is definitely a fun server and a great alternative to blue.

Yeah red forum is crazy at the moment. As with all P99 forums the game is a different place, and if OOC troubles you too much you can always dump it in a new window and minimize it ;)
Been getting lots of tells about this post, good luck to all the noobies, hit me up in game on iady and I might have some spells cash or random loot on me. Stay Classy.

Red is terrible. It is only for the most bored of the bored. It only exacerbates every problem you'll ever find on blue. Can't find a group? Good luck with 1300 less people. Can't find an item? Good luck with 1300 less sellers. Not a Neckbeards with 90 hours a week to play? Enjoy having your limited play time ruined by trolls. I cannot recommend anyone but the total hardcore, total bored, total neckbeard or total troll ever play on red.

My friend, son and I all thought it would be fun to join red once. As soon as we did we were met in our newbie zone with "Get off the server you boxers!". We said politely, we are not boxing and then continuously were harassed and killed by a couple of twinks until we left and never came back.
This is why your server is toast and eventually will be replaced with another blue server. It is your own population's fault.

Clearly this is coming from someone who's never camped an item, or done any solo work themselves. Not saying that's a bad thing but you've got to bear in mind that you get out of red what YOU put in into it. It's all very easy to sit in EC and just buy up what you need... on red its harder, you gotta farm it yourself or pay over the odds for it.
For Tzeriel, the mountain is too steep... so he's not gonna climb it.

It isn't a mountaintop. It is a pit. There is no extra "Challenge". This is not a PvP game. It isn't even 5% balanced for PvP. Red server exists to keep the extreme trash off of blue. The fact that the inmates willingly imprison themselves is a great thing.

Theres no way i would play on red unless it had a substaintially higher XP rate. Leveling to 60 on a server that has 1/10th the pop with the same xp rate as blue sounds about as fun as letting a draft horse trample my ballsack.

It's not the same XP rate. I bug reported the "1-50 scaling bonus" as being entirely gone by level 45 (I had blue logs to compare with), but from 1-30 at least the XP is much faster on red.
Staff have stuff in the works to boost the XP and promote grouping overall though! Hate on red if you want, but at least give it a shot if you have any interest at all once the staff put this stuff live :)

Yeah, when you take into account that it's a social game and you're supposed to be with friends everything falls into place.
My favorite thing to do on live though was zip around doting dwarf melees while staying out of melee range (go Selo's!). Was great getting them to <5% and watching them crawl to a zoneline while sending angry tells.

Tecmos, its great that you enjoy it. You're clearly head and shoulders above 99.9% of the people on either server, so I imagine an environment filled with sociopath speedbumps would challenge you more. However, to most of us, the environment Red provides is not a challenge. It is a miserable inconvenience, filled with miserable, mean people. Watching them try to get people on Red is akin to watching an episode of To Catch a Predator.
Please don't assume people not wanting to deal with the children on red simply "Aren't up for a challenge". EQ by itself is a challenge. I played on WoW PvP servers where I was part of 25% of the server on my faction and loved it. I enjoy games like Dark Souls. I play Diablo on hardcore. The common theme in those is they're actual challenges, not simply a group of ahead of you bullies looking to get their rocks off killing a level 2 over and over.
