View Full Version : Potential New Player

I've been seeing things about Project 1999 for the last 4 years or so on YouTube. I would come across the name every time I would have a craving for nostalgia and would search YouTube videos of old EverQuest. I think I remember seeing something about Project 1999 before it came out (or shortly after) and though I liked the thought, I didn't really think it would last or be worth looking in to. But finally, this time I went on a nostalgia spree and came across it on YouTube I decided to actually look a little bit more into it. So I have been reading these forums, and it actually seems pretty awesome! Plus, there are actually new players within the last month! I figured it would be lacking in any players to level up with, but since I came across a couple new player posts, so I'm seriously considering trying this out.

I played back when I was probably in 3rd grade or so and so I was never actually any good. I would mostly just create characters and get them to like level 5-15. But I loved the atmosphere of the game. I remember coming back to it a couple years later after Planes of (Power? Knowledge? One of them) was out and it just wasn't the same. I played a little WoW when it came out and UO years ago but I haven't actually played an MMO in years (and rarely even play any other types of video games on PC or consoles), so I feel like that would make me enjoy this server even more!

One thing I really like about this game that I remember is that you actually have to spend time traveling somewhere far away, you don't just have this go to teleporter that anyone can use. And there is no like minimap or whatever. It's more realistic in that you have to know landmarks and take the time to get to a place. AND you don't just go from zone to zone in a straight line after you get to a certain level, so traveling is actually something that you need to do. (Am I wrong about any of this?)

So a question I have is just how populated are the lower level areas? Like if I were to start up in Freeport or Kelethin would I be seeing many people or would it be pretty dead? How many new people do you see around? And how many people would I see who weren't actually new to the server but were lower level alts? When people level up alts do they typically do it in a similar fashion as a new player or do they just power level somehow?

Very populated. New players joining every day. Freeport and Kelethin are both good. Qeynos is dead. With EQMac dying, now is a good time to join as a chunk of them will be creating toons for the first time on P99. Plenty of people level alts by just having them group with others (although majorly twinked).

Come join the fun.

I was in the same boat as you - early EQ had been pretty much the only MMO I ever played before I found this server. Plenty of new people around the Freeport and Gfay area and plenty of people levelling up alts with varying degrees of twinkage.

Get involved - you won't regret it.

Qeynos may be dead but there are always people in Blackburrow taking every spawn for gnoll fangs.

I am in the process of leveling up a druid (level 14 now) and recently migrated from Qeynos to Freeport. Qeynos was far from dead, especially in Blackburrow. I had little trouble in grinding 1-14 in the Qeynos region.

I look forward to seeing you and other new players in game!

I would say this: It's free and if you are feeling nostalgic, give it a try. Being that you were in 3rd grade when you played, and you liked it even then... you'll probably love it now! And in the worst case scenario, it's free and you spent no money in your attempt to see if you liked it! Give it a go!

Seems like some good logic to me, I'll try getting it set up in the next week or so, hopefully it goes smoothly... but for some reason, I have my doubts about getting it running, heh, hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

It can be a pain to setup, but if you get stuck just ask for help on the twitch streams or this forum.

This is the basic setup guide.

also this one helped me.

Ahh yes, Jack Sparrow goes swimming at Hanauma Bay searchin' for coffee filters and seeds with a magnifying glass but only finds the 22nd element. I've come across a couple posts about that.

I can hardly believe it. I got it running... with very little issues along the way! So now I gotta figure out what class and race I want. I was thinking a Woodelf Druid? Any reason that would be a bad idea? Or maybe some kind of Shaman or Cleric.

A little tip from me, as somebody who did a lot of waffling at first - play what you want. I know that seems obvious, but let me elaborate.

I mained a bard on live for a looong time. I love bards. I knew I wanted to play a bard, but I convinced myself I should play a caster first in order to be less gear dependent and save up money to twink my bard a little. The result? I played for a few months and ended up taking a break for a few months.

The plat will come, the gear will come. But none of it will come if you quit because you're playing a character you're not fully enjoying.

when i first came to p99 i made a caster type ( int or wis. doesnt matter ) that i wanted just to get started. I then used thta to make a melee that i wanted. starting fresh as a melee is harder being my reasoning. worked out ok for me. just food for thought.

Yes, a Wood Elf Druid is a great first toon on here. I know there is a lot of them but always room for more. You can make plat porting, power leveling and looting. They are great at making plat. And they don't really need a lot of gear till you start out Quad Kiting and a lot of people never do that. I charmed way more than Quadded. And welcome aboard.

Glad you decided to give it a go! Wood Elf druid is a good choice imo. Good starting area and lots of options for you to develop your play style. Ignore anybody who says there are too many druids and just play what you like!

I played a warrior on live and loved it but I remembered how hard it was to start off with no money on a gear dependent class. I decided to roll a druid figuring I could get to porting level and make some cash and then twink a warrior or monk. As it turns out, druid is the most fun I've had with any class and I haven't made a single alt because I love my druid so much.

Cool, Woodelf Druid it is then! How should I distribute my stats? Is there anything I should know about druids? I'll be reading up on them too.

Hmm, I would say put everything you can into wis since in the end you're going to be a pure caster. I can't remember if it allows you to dump all your points into wis, but if it doesnt then I would put the remainder in stamina.

You'll probably melee a bit in the lower levels but once you can kite effectively you might as well only carry a melee weapon to finish mobs off when they're on their last leg as opposed to expending mana to finish of their last 4% of health.

That's how I would do it anyways. I could be wrong.

wisdom and strength

Wis is easy to max with cheap gear. Woodelves are weak. Carrying around gear can be heavy.

Aaron brings up a good point, though I would say eventually you'll have a str buff and hopefully weight reduction bags. Extra sta will improve your survivability by giving you more hp. With the ability to port just about anywhere, you can always gate to whichever druid ring you prefer and sell and then get back to hunting.

Being encumbered does suck though, so extra str as Aaron says would definitely not be a bad thing.

Thanks Wotsirb401, I might just do that. And thank you shams and Aaron! See I didn't even know that a druid is usually pure caster, or that druids can port, haha, all stuff I'm sure most returning players knew. Plus I'll have to wiki search what it means to "kite."

Will do!

Yup, now I just have to wait for the activation email from EQEmulator forums so that I can actually make my account and character. I actually was frustrated making this Project1999 forum account because I wouldn't receive an email to activate the account. So I ended up creating like 4 different emails (@live @gmail @yahoo etc...) and 4 different forum accounts trying to figure out the issue but wouldn't receive the email (plus at this stage I couldn't ask for help either since I couldn't post, making it even more frustrating). Somewhere along the way, I realized I needed an EQEmulator forum account to create a server account so I tried making an account on that forum but wouldn't receive the confirmation email their either. A day later (yesterday) I look at my email inbox and have like 10 emails (since I kept having them sent to me), haha.

Does someone have to approve my account before an email is sent? Anyways, in the midst of troubleshooting the email issue, I got the game up and running and was actually able to make a character on one of the EQEmulator server accounts yesterday (an account with a ridiculous name and attached to a new email), so I at least got everything working. Now I just have to wait until I can get the account associated with the correct email working (because I didn't try making an EQEmulator forum account with my main email) to actually create my true character (assuming that I receive the confirmation email soon).

But I'd say the amount of issues I encountered all balanced out since the game itself was so easy to get up and running.

Very nice, yeah i never had issues during install back when i started. The only thing was I was soo excited to get started that I made a human necro because i forgot to take the nektulos file out the forest was blacked out , or else I would have been a darkelf necro.

Some quick answers;
1) server is nicely populated, especially during peak times. Off peak can be more difficult but usually I find a way
2) in regards to low level zones, I've always found Gfay (Crushbone) and Black Burrow to be busy
3) people with some play time under their belt here 'usually' twink their alts a bit, but who cares, these are the best people to group with :P

Second day back and I've already died and lost my body in the woods of Greater Faydark and went linkdead on a boat to Freeport and fell into the Ocean of Tears. Spent an hour and a half or so looking for my body in GFay and am currently swimming across an ocean in search for a dock. I love this game, it requires adventure!

EDIT: So I swam half the zone and got to a dock (from the Twin Tines to Zechariah Reigh Island I believe), and was attacked by a reef shark. I get out of the water and guess what... so does the shark! This floating shark chases me around and I almost die until I decide to run into one of the shacks. Luckily the shark isn't able to get into the little shacks, so it swims (through the air) back to the water... I took a screenshot of it floating but it came out as a black square :-/

EDIT: And now... I make it to the boat. It heads back to BB, then goes the circuit again. I zone into East Freeport and get stuck in the sky! I looked up the correct way to take a screenshot after the failed attempt at capturing the shark... so I didn't miss this one.

This is where I am currently... stuck.

Someone told me to /rewind and I fell into the water :-)
Yay! I'm free!

EDIT: So I was in the middle of nowhere, and I'm just swimming and finally I start to see it. The Freeport Dock! It's quiet as I'm swimming and then the EverQuest theme starts playing as I approach the dock.. it's like a flippin' movie or something.. after all of these ordeals I have finally arrived to the Freeport dock! Hahaha.
