View Full Version : New to EQ!

Yes, believe it or not, I have NEVER played any of the EverQuest games.

I'm tired of current MMORPG's. They're just blah. I've played WoW for too long and nothing else can hold my attention longer than a couple of weeks.

So after a couple of days of research, I've stumbled upon P1999. I hear not only is EQ a great game all in all, but P1999 is doing it right. The live version of EQ is no good (so I hear) so I'll be making P1999 Blue (I believe that is the PvE server) my home for now.

I look forward to getting ingame here within the next few hours and meeting new friends, and experiencing what I've been missing out on for all these years!

Cheers everyone, to a new beginning! :)

Hell yea, great to hear it. And welcome.

EQ is a very challenging and sometimes unforgiving game, but if you stick around long enough you will find out that these are some of the reasons why it's such a great game.

Be prepared to be transported to a time before all those luxuries existed, like maps and compasses and quest logs.

EQ is an imperfect game that frustrated even a returning veteran like myself. But the longer I play it, the more those imperfections seem less like flaws and more like video games ought to be. This game is immersive, a world you truly must enter and understand to enjoy. I've tried introducing numerous friends who can't get past level 1 because they get bored, or irritated, and go back to those flashy games they are used to.

Too bad, I say.

I'm ready for the challenge! I'm tired of the hand-holding, non-challenging game that WoW and many other games are today. I'm ready to be immersed and sucked into a world again!

I'm so pumped just thinking about it, the chance to really be amazed by a game again. As soon as I get ingame I'll stop by this thread and put my IGN here. Hopefully I can get Darreth.

And thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Let me know if you need any suggestion on race/classes to start with. I'm assuming you've seen the wiki, it has a pretty good writeup on all of that also.

Nice to see a nice face, I don't believe there's a better game that will ever exist than classic EQ.

I got one of my coworkers to join and he never played as we. Is now level 20 and enjoying the shit out of it.

Prepare for good times.

Should also note that my friend had also never played MMOs before so he is a true newb.

Relatively new here as well. I started playing last week, and have played a few sessions so far.

Really excited that this exists, and that there are people who not only put in so much time and effort into the emulation, but that there are so many people who enjoy it. It's very easy to get immersed in the environment.

In the old days of 1999-2000, I played the same character as I'm playing now. A 35th level gnome enchanter. I created and ran the guild Magi Discordia on the Quellious server, which consumed a lot of time and was much fun.

So I'm Lumbo again, 5th level gnome enchanter hanging out around Orc Hill and Kelethin, and having a great time so far. Say hello if you run into me!

One last thing, I wanted to say thanks to whoever came by and gave me that Crude Stein last night. It was extremely kind, and you were gone so quick I didn't have time to get your name. Thank you.

Cheers!

Being a "true newb" was so fun when I started EverQuest, plus I was in 3rd grade so I was practically a newb to reality, learning english and improving my typing on EverQuest, understanding and spelling words on spelling tests that I learned from EQ... Heh.

Again, thank you everyone for such a warm welcome! I miss a community, and it's more than obvious that P1999 has an outstanding community! I've been reading quite a bit on the Wiki, for Newbies in particular. Haven't quite decided what class I want to be. Hope to see some of you ingame, and I will definitely have plenty of questions for you all!

Also feel free to hit me up in game if you have absolutely any questions or need some advice, or heck just wanna talk football, lol. I'll for sure be on again Saturday, if I don't see ya before then. Lol I appreciate that! Not sure If I want to accept gifts just yet, might go down the road of true newbie, with no help, you know? Now advice, I could definitely use. I've narrowed down my choices to Enchanter or Cleric.. Any advice, anyone?

Cleric is easier.
Enchanter if you like to solo and get money.

I applaud you for striving to be a true newb, but with the state of the economy, it's hard not to twink.

As a cleric will I be able to solo? Or will I even have to worry about soloing? Do more people just group?
And I will keep that in mind.. Still would like to try it though. :p

Both will take a bit of a learning curve but I'd say cleric is easier in each aspect. Solo'ing can be done but might be slow especially for a new person, alot of trying this and that and seeing what works in certain situations. However I feel you wouldn't have any problems finding a group, just melee/nuke your way to 8-10 and group from there, that's what I'd do. /lfg on will be a great tool for you and during normal hours I don't see you lfg for longer than 15 mins especially as you get into your teens/20s. You will also make a crapton of friends lol.

Both classes are great at getting groups, Enchanter is one of the best soloists on top of that. Clerics can't solo much, but every group pretty much requires one.

Welcome to the game, pretty awesome to see a real newb again!

Like others said, the imperfections of Everquest classic is what makes it so good in the end.

Forget soloing as a cleric though. It's not because you can't (you can do decently vs undead) but because you'll be sitting on your butt waiting for mana the whole time.

Use the /friend command to add people to your friendlist who you've grouped with who seemed fun to hang out with and go from there, Grouping is way more fun than soloing anyways.

Also, in Everquest it's not rude to ask a group if you can join, or asking in a zone if they got a spot for you, it's part of the game.

Steep learning curve for the enchanter but well worth the outcome if you're into that. Levels 1-15 are miserable. WoW has nothing that can compare imo.

Cleric would be easier in that in those low levels you're a minor tank that can heal. Later, you're everyones bestest buddy.

As a Falcons fan, I already hate you.

Just kidding.

But really.

My suggestion would be join any of the leveling guilds after you meet some new people, it makes grouping (which is easy enough as a cleric) even easier.

Oh, and stay away from RMT's and boxing

Feel free to ask questions here. You can also find me and some others on IRC most of the time. Regarding your earlier questions about soloing/grouping as a cleric - you can solo as a cleric (there is even a guide on the wiki on doing so), but they are the worst of all the caster classes at soloing in terms of EXP per hour. All they do is nuke down a monster, preferably undead (better nukes against them), then sit for several minutes getting mana back. It is very inefficient. You can certainly group all the way to 60, especially as a cleric or enchanter. Clerics are a lot more straightforward. What I'd do is get to level 4 just bashing things, then go to Greater Faydark, get a bind there, and start grouping. First in Orc Hill, then in Crushbone. Don't be afraid to start your own groups. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice! I rolled a cleric, and I've been bashing things for a little while. I'm loving the game so far, I feel so lost in it with no maps! Sadly I have to go for a bit, but I'll be back on tonight. I'm going to have to use the Wiki to figure some stuff out. Mainly what a bind is and how to get it, and also where Orc Hill is, and these other areas.
Hope to see some of you on later!

Binding is how you change your "spawn point" that you will return to if you use the spell Gate, or die. All casters can eventually bind themselves and other players (as long as they are grouped). There is some restriction however, melee classes can only be bound in cities or in a few specific areas (anyone can bind anywhere in Greater Faydark). You want to keep this in mind when you start traveling....dying then having to spend an hour running back to where you were is no fun.

Orc Hill is a small hill that has a few orc camps around it, it's not far from Kelethin in Greater Faydark (Gfay).

Also, welcome and enjoy. EQ is a great game, the progression is a lot slower than what you will be used to in WoW but it's definitely worth it. IMO the slower progression makes every little bit so much more significant...I was prouder of a lvl 10 in tattered leather armor on EQ than I was of any of my max level characters in other games.

Orc Hill is a camp in Greater Faydark north of the city of Kelethin where newbies often go to group before they're ready for Crushbone. A bind is a spell level 12+ casters can cast on you to change where you appear when you die - this is important because when you die, you need to get to your corpse with your items on it. If you created a character that starts out in a certain city and then you go far away to hunt, and you die there, you have a long journey to your corpse. (I should add that Clerics and other wisdom casters get Bind Affinity at 14, not 12; you will most likely need to get binds from other people before then.)

Awesome, thank you both for the help! So far I'm really enjoying the slow progression. Usually it would bore me, in any other MMORPG, but for some reason it's quite enchanting in EQ. It's awesome, I'm loving swinging at bats with my club.

If no one has told you yet, go to your Cleric Trainer and put one point in Sense Heading. Next, you need to move the Sense Heading hotkey from your Abilities tab and move it to one of your hotbars. Then hit Alt O to bring up the options and bind your movement keys to whatever slot your Sense Heading tab is in.

I use the arrow keys to play so I have my Sense Heading bound to left and right arrows. This will allow you to level it up without having to manually click. Some people take it off after they level it up, but, since there isn't a compass in game I would leave it up. Knowing which direction you were/are heading will save you so much fucking time

I think I was 14 or 15 when I started but I vastly improved my typing skills. For what it's worth too you see lots of unused words as well in the dialogue and learning about mythical creatures is awesome.

To the OP: best of luck out there, there are tons of great guides out there but the best of all is just doing it. Gonna be some good times ahead for you. Throw my on your friends list and I can help you out when I'm online.
