Well it looks like our friendly neighborhood DDoSer has returned.

Our data center made a configuration mistake that is making our servers more susceptible to flooding than normal. I expect this to be fixed tomorrow.

Then, I will be working with the data center to create a DDoS Mitigation profile for our services. This will not happen right away. It could take several days to tweak it. But this time, we have options, and the data center will work with us.

Frustrating, I know. It may take a few days to get through this but don't give up, just play cautiously.

I threw a honey pot out on my customer facing connection at work, it's amazing how you're literally under CONSTANT attack. Not of the DDoS variety necessarily, but someone always probing. Or watching the real time logs on one of my ASAs you can see constant access attempts trying to brute force in.

Like you said, it is wasted effort to try to go after who is doing it because even in the unlikely event you find and stop them there is another person ready to do it. The best way to stop someone is to make it a waste of their time.

Just because someone uses the terms "server" or "packets" doesn't make them a network engineer or server admin either. I'm sure there are many here who know lots more about it than I do, which is why I was asking for a more detailed explanation so I could learn something.

DDoS attacks will typically be legitimate traffic. Firewalls will match traffic type and do deep packet inspection, but if the packets are legitimately constructed it'll let them on through. IP based filtering is basically useless especially against a DDoS attack because the slave/zombie computers will be located all over the place, and IP addresses change. It would be basically impossible to maintain a whitelist for something like this.

There is simply no way to mitigate a strong enough DDoS attack. Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Apple, etc have all been hit and brought down. There is some pretty kick ass stuff that can mitigate it upstream but we're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars for the gear. And even that isn't a silver bullet.

Rogean, or anyone else that could explain this, I experienced some strange behaviour last night (12 hours ago from the time of writing) whilst in TD. Everything was fine until suddenly I noticed that anything to do with spells was lagging out. For example, I'll cast a spell but nothing would happen; no effects, no result, it's like it just never occurred. The problem was that my spell gems would be grayed out and I would be unable to cast anything. A few minutes later my spell would go through and the spell gem would return to normal. Strangely enough though, my movement and chats were as per normal!

Other people with me at the time didn't experience this issue.

My ping was the same as usual (300ms; Australia) and I didn't notice any packet loss.

I could also swear that it seemed to happen exclusively in TD...

Any ideas/explanation?

other legal action could be taken but it would take a lot of time and probably a lot of out-of-pocket money for a decent lawyer... and with no guarantee that the guy that is doing the DDoS would actually be punished in any way.

also, P99 itself is a bit of a legal grey area. who knows... if the spotlight is put on us, the whole project might be deemed illegal and court-ordered to stop...
