Just wondering how many people we have in the community that live in the northeast and could share some experiences for those that live in the harsh environments of california.

In central maine here the "warmest" it has been in the last 3 days is -7. Within 2-3 breaths the inside of my nostrils are literally frozen.

the ice and snow are minor in comparison to this temperature. For people that have never experienced negative degree weather you can't even begin to comprehend.

oh just saw on the news its going to be -31 tonight...

at least tomorrow we should see positive degrees come on 3!!!

Yeah man they're amazing, I even found a pair of mittens with a little pocket for them so they don't burn your hands with direct contact.

The low here in NE Pennsylvania is gonna be around -2 today so I can't compare to yours, but it is a bit nipply out right now here.

I am missing my hometown atm, though. Tri-Cities, Washington State. The winters are pretty nice there usually because of the desert climate. Yes, there is some snow but it isn't too bad, usually.

I lived in Spokane for 6 years. Remember the ice storm of 1996? Friend of mine lost power and didn't get it back for like 3 weeks due to all the broken tree limbs bringing down power lines.

I still miss Spokane. Had some good times there and I loved the climate. I wanna go home to WA. :)

I don't feel as though I'm getter, I just find it funny how people don't realize how cold it actually gets once you get around 10-15 and even moreso when it goes negative.

We have mountains up here bob! and really I am glad I live in maine, sure we have bad winters but there are no fire ants poisonous snakes alligators etc etc. Everyplace has their pros and cons but I like being able to walk through the woods and not have to worry about too much, just check yourself for ticks when you get home and that's about it.

Well, its -15F here with wind chills pushing -50F when the wind gusts, and its all about covering up. Winter coats, ski hats, mittens or gloves, and a scarf, facemask, or your coat collars pulled up high around your face. If you are going to be outside more than a minute or two you end up dressed like Khan on Ceti Alpha V.

Very pretty. I guess I should have specified the East in general as apparently I picked on the one place with a few mountains =)

Regardless, you are going to lose in an argument saying the eastern side of the states has bigger mountains and better riding than the west. That was my point.

Stockton Springs / Belfast area

The coast got hit by that last ice storm really bad. few inches of ice covering everything. Lots of trees down and a lot of damage. Whats left of a historic tree in my front yard needs to come down now in the spring before it falls into the road.

Can't say I've seen anything as bad since the ice storm of 98. (the one in 98 was in a class of its own)

Rhambuk

I was lucky up here, got to about 48degrees with minimal rain in my town but just north there were flood warnings.
back down to 12 today but thankfully there isn't a layer of ice like that again.

I didn't think that was the argument anyone was having. The argument was that we have "no mountains to enjoy all that winter". That's very much false, skiing is huge in parts of NH/VT and even maine on the Green/white mountains.

I didn't provide a picture of McKinley btw, those are all of Washington/the presidential range in NH.

An interesting side conversation is discussing how "big" mountains are. Of course the mountains on the east have a typically lower elevation than those of the rockies due to the east being closer to sea level (also a fascinating topic if you're ever interested in figuring out exactly how that is determined) however Mt. Washington's Prominance is still the 59th highest in the US, and sans Hawaii/Alaska it is the 25th most prominent: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ultras_of_the_United_States

That said, on a global scale McKinley is the only one that is really significant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_peaks_by_prominence

Hurray for both winter and mountains, a few of my favorite things!

Yeah I love the area. The only problem is that the bank sustains it.

The town wasn't much more than a slum before MBNA/Bank of America rolled in, and will return to that state when the bank leaves. its the only major source of jobs in the area.

Now to the food:

Alexis is a great little pizza joint on a corner downtown.

Lot of great seafood places down on the harbor.

If you havnt been to Rollies downtown its a MUST. That is my normal hangout as well as most of the locals. Just a hole in the wall diner/pub. not much room. but the best you will find in the area.

Ming's is great on Searsport Avenue for Chinese. there is also a really good thai food place on the same road but I don't eat there due to nut allergies. Angler's is another great seafood place on that road

And then for those who just care about getting drunk and stupid we have "The Lookout" down on the harbor. The locals call it "The Blackout"

Has something to do with the way ice is formed; I'm probably the wrong person to have explain this so I won't get too technical. But basically for ice to form there has to be a "nucleus" present, normally in nature it would be some sort of impurity that the ice can stick to. Since there aren't really any impurities in the bottle of water and the bottle is left mostly undisturbed as it drops below its freezing point its harder for ice to actually form. When the bottle is taken out of the freezer the water is disturbed enough for the water to freeze/crystalize, or something like that. I believe they call liquid water that has dropped below it's freezing point "super cooled" but again this is just off what I remember from a science class I took like 3 years ago lol, it is pretty awesome to see though.

ps I'm in new York and fuck this cold its painful to go outside.

Danth
01-08-2014, 02:04 PM
Been chilly in Ohio, bit below normal, but it doesn't feel especially newsworthy beyond the modern tendency towards hyping everything. I recall many area schools were shut down for about a week in early 1994 during a period of excessive cold. I think it hit -20 across most the region then--directly, not bogus windchill. Nothing was shut down that long this time and minimum low temperatures didn't really get close.

The folks who got it hard would've been either the folks farther north of here where it got genuinely frigid--you people in Maine or Canada or whatnot--or the folks a bit farther south who aren't prepared for cold. A bit under 0 degrees is trivial when you're used to it, but 30 degrees sucks when you don't even own a real coat.

I prefer this sort of cold spell over the more typical ~25 degree weather. It doesn't snow anything like it does at 20-30 degrees, the ground's frozen so there's no mud, and the air's crisp and clear as can be. Couple weeks ago we had a couple days of 40, maybe flirting with 50 degree weather. Folks were out in their shirtsleeves. The ground was a sea of mud so I'm not sure that it was necessarily better.
