View Full Version : Continual screen freezes

I have no problem signing on or playing, except more and more frequently the screen just freezes...no error message. When I minimize the screen and re-enlarge the screen it goes black...after about 20 secs the entire screen goes black (when playing the play screen does not fill the entire desktop). This last episode happened after about 30 min playing time in N. Karana, but this has happened in Qeynos Hills and N, Qeynos as well.
The truly disheartening aspect of this is that after an hour of combatting light and dark blue mobs, I was root rotting a Griffawn last night, the screen froze, I could still hear the audio, had to power down the computer as CTL-Alt-Del would not get me to the task manager so that I could terminate the connection. I logged on again at my bind point dead, having lost more exp than I had gained in the past hour. I hope this isn't part of the "challenging game experience" I signed up for. At this rate I will be forced to group, where going LD while in combat will not automatically result in my death.
My character is call Lcdr.

it sounds like you need to run EQ in windowed mode, do you?
If you do, this happens to me when I window out, are there any programs constantly running in the background?

Nobody ever find a solution to this issue? My client keeps freezing within a minute of logging in and resizing doesn't fix the issue as the window just turns black. I can still hear sound though so i know the game is still running in the background.

Any update on this? Mine keeps freezing on me and I'm really getting tired of dying because of this issue.

This has started happening to me too. I don't use any custom UI, I use windowed mode, use the XP/Service pack 2 compatibility and run as administrator. Between random freezing and crashing when logging to character select (this is happening less in compatibility mode but is still happening), I'm going to toss my computer out the window soon.
There are different posters describing slightly different symptoms. You should try to get the obvious things out of the way. There is a post about what sounds like the client or system freezing, and another about the screen itself freezing (and going black when minimized/restored).
Like I said, try to get some easy troubleshooting things out of the way.
1.) Are you graphics drivers up to date?
2.) Attempt to run the game after booting your computer into a selective startup environment. Typically access through msconfig. Google your operating system + selective startup for instructions on how to do this. After making the quick settings change, you will be prompted to reboot. Does the problem persist? If not, something is interfering with the client or graphics (some overlays, etc).
3.) Thermal issues with either the processor or gpu can certainly cause these types of problems. It is a warmer time of year right now anyhow. Your processor may be thermal throttling (a safety feature built into some processors to try to prevent damage), or outright overheating due to inadequate cooling. Your gpu fan could be clogged up with dust, have bad/old thermal compound, etc. The fan may not even be turned up (a feature to alleviate noise). You could try a program like 'Core Temp' to check in on your processor/core temps. Remember to run this under stress. Since you are having problems with the game, run this while running the game for awhile, and see what temperatures you are getting. If you have AMD, Nvidia or ATI graphics card, you might want to look into 'MSI Afterburner'. You could check your temperatures, and setup a fan profile that automatically increases/decreases your fan speed based on given temperatures. For other graphic manufactures, you will need to find other software to give you your temperatures, or dynamically adjust your fan speed.
I think anytime your monitor goes blank, but you can still hear (non looping) sound, it's extremely likely you are experiencing a graphics card issue. That could be hardware related (failing card, overheating), or software related (conflicting controller software, driver issues). Because I read that the "screen froze", and didn't go black, I am not considering an issue with the monitor itself. Anyhow, just some things to check. Post again if you can think of anything else, or you have tried the above suggestions and have anything further to report. Good luck :o

*since being ninja changed to Windows 10*
I noticed when my screen saver kicks in these things can happen. If I alt enter to get it full screen it will come back but black screen. I alt enter again and it's back to normal windowed mode again ready to go. Maybe change sleep/screen saver timers to like and hour or 2, and don't use any power saving stuff. Enlarge that carbon foot print.

I have the same issue here.
How to reproduce it :
Have EQ run in windowed mode ;
Open some busy website (flash ?) in latest version of Firefox ;
and bam, EQ froze. To unfreeze it, I have to close my Firefox window and switch EQ to full screen (alt + enter).
This is a new issue that occurs since last week (Firefox last update I guess).
It's the same issue as when Windows prompt you for admin action approval.

ya its flash / firefox ... cant tell if its flash or what but it seems to be linked to videos /w sound that make the freeze happen

Same issue here! Client freezes when Firefox loads flash or shockwave. Have to kill eqgame.exe process to get back in.

Hmm, not getting this exactly but my screen freezes momentarily and very randomly. I can get several freezes in a minute. I run firefox as well. May just try another browser to see if that solves it.
