I remember Verant, briefly, had an event where players could play mobs in some zones and attack other players.

I thought this was a great idea because as a player mobs are predictable, but when they were being controlled by humans they were unpredictable which made the game all that more immersive.

For some reason the idea never stuck and it was pulled only a day or two after they started it and never came back.

Does anyone know if the functionality to do that is still in the game, and if it's possible. maybe just as part of a gm event or something.

That eventually became the shrouded stuff in the client. testeqgame.exe from Trilogy, doesn't even have the necessary functions client-side for the character select screen to play as a mob, so it would take quite a bit of casuistic statements in the source code to defer the character to having an orc, a rat, or what have you on the server instead of an ogre, or a half-ling etc. One could implement it with standard EQEMU #commands though.

Not to put words in the devs' mouths, but I brought this up on IRC some time ago, also having been a big fan of it, and one of the admins said that he'd like to implement it at some point, but that stuff like kunark, velious, bug fixes, and whatnot were all higher priority, so not to hold my breath.

That was called Project M, and I believe it is now available in EQ1 as "Monster Missions."
