TL;DR Version:
-----------------------
Any Class 1k Twink Set:
-----------------------
Platinum Fire Wedding Ring x2 ~500p
Smoldering Brand ~500p
-----------------------

People make a big fuss about gear and a lot of new players get the impression that you can't have fun unless you have the best gear, which couldn't be further from the truth. A great deal of satisfaction in this game comes from upgrading as you play.

That said, for new players or alt-aholics, a leg up for the first 20 or so levels can take a bit of frustration out of the early level grind. I present here a guide (by no means perfect) for some suggested inexpensive twinking options.

At low levels (and all levels really), HP and Mana are king, respective of the classes that use them. So any cheap gear that offers +HP and +Mana are desired. Don't invest in expensive +Int +Wis +Sta gear just yet, because you won't see any worthwhile gains until the middle and upper levels. 5p for an Alligator Tooth Earring will give you more bang for your buck than 150 plat for a 6 Sta Platinum Bloodstone Earring (5hp to start vs 6hp, or even less depending on class). After gearing for HP and Mana, decent weapons with high damage and low delay are the next concern (except for casters who should buy their spells). Ideally, you want a weapon for each weaponskill you have, even if you rely on one skill more than others. You want to be able to skill up all of your skills every level. It will save you a lot of trouble in the future when you find that a better weapon of a different skill will upgrade your current weapon.

Also, when you do upgrade your gear, the smart purchases to begin with will be jewelry. The prices on jewelry are pretty stable and they can be worn by anyone, so when you do eventually upgrade the jewelry you can either resell it for what you paid, or you can pass it on to another alt.

Prices shown are likely to be the lowest you can find these items for, though it may take a bit of work and bargaining to get them that low.

*Note: Items with * before them are my choice for priority if you're going super cheap or you are a brand new player looking for what to start with.

Golden Fire Wedding Ring x2 ~200p for Platinum Fire Wedding Ring (Save 300p at the cost of 2ac and 20hp. In the long run, Platinum will be more useful, but if you're short on plat, these will definitely give you good value.)
Moonstone Ring x2 ~200p for Platinum Skull Ring (Save 200p at the cost of 60hp, but you gain 20m and 6 str. Casters who don't have much str can benefit from being able to carry more loot, but 60hp at low levels is incredibly useful.)
Adamantite Band x2 ~300p for Platinum Fire Wedding Ring (Save 200p, gain 40hp at the cost of being more vulnerable to casters and 10ac)

Cheap All/All (Good to pass off to alts as you acquire better):
------------
Lizardscale Belt (10hp) ~20p
Chipped Bone Collar (10hp/10m) ~20p
Shiny Silk Gloves (5hp) Never see these for sale, but they drop off a level 10 spider in LFay
Jaded Electrum Bracelet x2(20hp/20m) ~40p
Jaded Silver Ring x2(10hp/10m) ~10p
Alligator Tooth Earring x2(10hp) ~10p Don't see these for sale much, but it's a level 3 camp.

decent recommendations, could probably add mistmoore drum/gypsy lute to bard and still be under 1k. Moonstone rings could be a much cheaper alternative to 5/55 rings for broke casters too.

If someone is really trying to twink on a budget then they should just buy the golden fire wedding rings. You only lose 2 AC and 20hp but save 300p that you can spend on other gear, weapons or spells.

I would just spend the money on the Platinum Fire. Those rings will last you into your 50's, and you're going to end up buying them anyhow.

More often than not you can find a free Dagger of Dropping for your int caster lowbie.. which is a handy upgrade for your beginner levels, aswell.

I'd go with just banded, since AC seems to be funky here. Use the plat towards +hp items

Is there any in depth analysis why AC is supposed to be funky? I see that statement thrown around a lot. I haven't seen anything detailed. I don't really know how AC is supposed to work anyways.

theory is right on. hp and mana items are key. procs at low lvl are key for melee also.

money in EQ, especially on this server is very skewed. the utility between the best in slot (buyable) item and the "very good" workable item in EQ classic is often marginal, but the cost difference is astronomical. you can find yourself paying over 50k for a few stat points/AC/HP/MANA pretty easily.

depending on how gear dependent your class is, you can be pretty well set up for less than 15k or much much less.

There are a few threads discussing the mitigation properties of AC is off.

I am not too sure at like level 15 it makes a lot of difference. But his evidence shows at level 35 and I would suspect above it makes a hell of a difference just like it should. :p

I'm sure thats easy to say when you have an established character but as a new player looking to get the most bang for your buck I would recommend just getting the golden fire rings and using the 300p for something else.

you might want to consider resale too when grabbing those rings and farm/save a bit more for 5/55. It's pretty easy to resell platinum fire wedding rings and the price is stable around 250 each. Golden fire can take some more time finding a buyer.

The best investment a new necromancer can make is in 2x Adamantite Bands, or 2x Platinum Fire Wedding Bands. Platinum Skull Rings are great, but if you can, for 100pp more, get all that into HP, you are going to be in a far better position when soloing. Additionally, you can find Adamantite Bands for 200pp a pop, and while the SV Magic sucks at higher end, the +150 hp for a soloing new Necro is an irreplaceable thing.

I'd always go with the Adamantite Bands before anything else. It is the single best item a new necromancer can get that is within grasp.

This. It's worth spending the extra couple hundred plat, especially since those will be your rings for the next 50+ levels.

This was my thinking for recommending the 5/55 rings, but the 4/45 rings are good too and would definitely be a big help to a low level toon.

But saving 300p on the rings does make sense if it means you're able to get better gear for another slot.

Not sure I understand this question, but in the OP he said

*Note: Items with * before them are my choice for priority if you're going super cheap or you are a brand new player looking for what to start with.

and that's why it says "*vendor instruments" under the bard thing, instead of stuff like Mistmoore Battle Drums which might indeed sell for 100pp. The difference in instrument modifiers to a starting character between "Drum"/"Hand Drum" and Mistmoore Battle Drums is negligible anyway; using a vendor drum increases Selo's (20% runspeed when you get it at level 5) by 10% (so 20%*1.1 = 22%) but using Mistmoore (17%) would bump Selo's up to 23.4% (20%*1.16=23.4) for that extra 100pp.

This Ravager's 1kpp twink guide, not Applesauce's 1400pp twink guide with 1.4% better instruments.

Reselling the rings shouldn't be that big of a deal either. I still have my golden fire wedding rings from 2012 since I can always use them again on another alt but if a newbie really thinks that 300p is worth another 2ac and 20hp by all means...

I agree with this. For new players Golden is the way to go. When I made this guide I was thinking more of what cheap universal gear I'd want to keep in a backpack to pass around from alt to alt, since I'm one of those alt-aholics who really likes Crushbone. Since I roll a lot of alts, I wanted cheap gear that would be easy to replace incase I decided to leave it on alts I only rarely play.

For new players that 300p would definitely be better spent on weapons, spells or other hp/mana gear. You could get the Golden Jaded Bracelets, Chipped Bone Collar, Alligator Tooth Earrings, Drake-Hide Sleeves and Kobold Hide Boots for 160hp/40mana with plat to spare.

I do think that the Platinum rings are worth it though if you're not entirely new to the server. The platinum rings essentially give you and extra 5 levels of HP at lower levels where the Golden only give you 4.

I just got a new laptop, so I'm busy setting that up with updates and installs, but maybe in the next day or two I'll clean up the guide and put it on the wiki, since there seems to be some interest in it. I've also got a lot of stuff I want to put in a guide as far as making plat while leveling goes, mostly stuff I wish I knew when I started.

Paladin: Baton of Faith (http://wiki.project1999.com/Baton_of_faith) (2HB that's damn-near BIS until FA turn-in) (L20-46) ~100-200p
Also the Sword of Skyfire you have for SK should be listed for PAL.

Enchanter is about stacking CHA ASAP:
Crude Stein -15CHA, 50p
Golden Cat Eye Bracelet - 7CHA, 35p
Gypsy Medallion or Cat Eye Plat Neck (JC) - 9CHA, ~150-200p
Electrum Star Ruby Ring - 7CHA, 100p
Platinum Star Ruby Veil - 9CHA, 250p

That's 61 CHA for 770p, putting you over 150CHA for even the lowest CHA enchanters (assuming +25CHA on creation). Although an extremely strong case can be made to swap the two CHA rings (14CHA/200p) for two 5AC/55HP (total: 10AC/110HP) rings for 500p. Being able to charm reliably from L12 is game-changing.

Bard:
Sarnak Emblazened Tabard ~100p -1AC from Banded, but you'll use the MR for a LONG time, plus 10HPs at low levels.
Beartooth Necklace - 50p.
That should eat up the rest of your budget, unless you are saving that for songs (Since bards only get 1 song per level, their budget for spells is much smaller).
